Open Positions and Fellowships 

Franklin R. Buchanan Prize for Outstanding Curriculum Publication on Asia
Association for Asian Studies

Established in 1995 by the AAS Committee on Educational Issues and Policy and the Committee on Teaching about Asia, the prize is awarded annually to honor an outstanding curriculum publication on Asia targeting any educational level, elementary through university.

The winning submission will reflect current scholarship, present
innovative teaching strategies, and make a significant impact on the intended audience. Submissions must have been published after January 1, 2007, and include extensive teaching strategies in order to be considered. Various formats are acceptable, including print, CD, video, and online formats. Submissions that address underrepresented regions of Asia are encouraged.

The 2009 Buchanan Prize will be awarded to the author of the work at the AAS Annual Meeting in Chicago, March 26 - 29, 2009. The prize includes a $1,000 monetary award and a one-year membership to AAS.

Dissertation Research Fellowship
Center for Khmer Studies

This program is open to U.S. doctoral candidates and scholars who have already earned their Ph.D. in the social sciences and humanities.  Scholars can pursue research in other countries in mainland Southeast Asia (Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Burma, Southern China) provided that part of their research is undertaken in Cambodia.

Postdoctoral Fellowships

  • Targeted Fields: Open to all fields.
  • Open To: Postdoctoral Scholars.
  • Citizenship: Open only to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
  • Eligibility Requirements: Must hold a PhD or expect to receive one by July.
  • Stipend: Stipends of up to $55,000 plus health benefits and up to $4,000 for research related expenses.
This program offers 15-20 fellowships for recent postdocs committed to careers in university teaching and research. Fellows conduct research under faculty sponsorship at any of the UC campuses or laboratories. Awards are for 1 year, renewable.

The competition is open to individuals who have received their doctoral degrees within the past seven years. We invite research proposals broadly in Pacific Rim studies from the humanities and social sciences, especially those focusing on cross-regional issues in the 'Pacific world' and with an interdisciplinary or comparative focus in areas important to the USF Center's mission (including but not limited to human rights and social justice, environmental sustainability; conflict resolution, strengthening democracy and civil society in emerging nations; internationals relations and security; and inter-religious dialog.

The East-West Center is pleased to announce new fellowships for the Asia Pacific Leadership Program for 2009-10. Entering its eight year, the Asia Pacific Leadership Program (APLP) is the center of excellence for leadership education in the Asia Pacific region.

The APLP is a graduate certificate program combining the development of regional expertise with the enhancement of individual leadership capacity. All participants receive an APLP Entrance Fellowship valued at approximately $15,000.

Association for Asian Studies Dissertation Workshop
The Politics of Environment

Chicago, March 29-April 1, 2009

This workshop is intended to bring together doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences who are: (1) developing dissertation proposals or are in early phases of research or dissertation writing; and who are (2) also dealing with the kinds of issues mentioned above in the context contemporary or historic Asian states and societies. Applicants need not have advanced to candidacy but must have at least drafted a dissertation research proposal. Applications are also welcome from doctoral students in the early phases of writing their dissertations.
