Thai Cooking Demonstration

By Chef Chai Chaowasaree

In conjunction with the Smithsonian "Key Ingredients" Exhibition, Kapi'olani Community College is pleased to announce a cooking demonstration by Chef Chai Chaowasaree.

The free demonstration is part of the visiting chef program funded through the Grace and Lyle Guslander Distinguished Visitors Program in Advanced Food Service.

Chef Chai Chaowasaree is the owner of award winning Chai's Island Bistro at the Aloha Tower Marketplace and Singha Thai Cuisine, in Waikiki. He is recognized as one of Hawai'i's best chefs and will demonstrate preparation of the following dishes:
  • Chai's signature kataifi-wrapped tiger prawns with pineapple vinaigrette
  • Grilled Thai beef salad with lemongrass garlic dressing
  • Thai red curry with chicken and bamboo shoots
Public parking is available in the "B" and "C" parking lots on the Kapi'olani Community College.

"Key Ingredients" is part of Museum on Main Street, a unique collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, state humanities councils across the nation, and local host institutions.

Kapi'olani Community College is planning a variety of activities to coincide with the exhibit, including a lecture and film series, story telling sessions, and a mixed plate art exhibit with local elementary schools. Information on these activities and the local exhibit, including exhibit hours, can be found here.

Grace Guslander created "The Distinguished Visitors Program in Advanced Food Service" at Kapi'olani Community College to perpetuate her husband Lyle's memory by fulfilling his desire "to give back to the community." Through a generous donation made in 1989, the distinguished visiting chef's program was launched, and Kapi'olani Community College has showcased several of its graduates who have become outstanding chefs themselves, or other renowned chefs from Hawaii and abroad.
