Guggenheim Fellowships
John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation

The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation annually offers fellowships to further the development of scholars and artists by assisting them to engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts, under the freest possible conditions.

The foundation provides fellowships for advanced professionals in all fields (natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, creative arts) except the performing arts. The fellowships are awarded to men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts. Fellowships are not available for students. The foundation only supports individuals; it does not make grants to institutions or organizations.

Assistant Professor of History of the Indian Ocean World
Department of Asian History, Seoul National University

The Department of Asian History at Seoul National University invites applications for a tenure track assistant professorship in the history of Indian Ocean World, i.e. South Asian or Southeast Asian history. Expertise in early modern or modern period will be considered with preference. A secondary field of research and teaching interest in comparative history is desirable. As the successful candidate will be expected to teach not only undergraduate courses but also graduate courses using original sources, he/she should have a good command of relevant native languages.

He/she will be required to teach 9 hours a week in English. The salary is approximately 50,000 U.S. dollars and may vary depending on career experience. A Ph.D. is required by the time of appointment.

Lecturer in Filipino
University of Michigan

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan invites applications for a renewable one-year lecturer position in Filipino language, beginning September 1, 2008.

Applicants for the position should have a Master's degree in a relevant field (preferably in second-language acquisition, linguistics, or education), native or near-native competence in Filipino and English, at least one year of experience in teaching Filipino as a second or foreign language at the college/university level (familiarity with teaching both heritage and non-heritage learners for all levels of Filipino preferred), and familiarity with language teaching methodologies as well as computer-assisted language instruction. Duties include 10-12 instructional hours for all levels of Filipino and active participation in teamwork and program affairs.

The application dossier should include an application letter explaining your qualifications and teaching philosophy, a current CV, evidence of teaching excellence, and three letters of recommendation. A teaching demo videotape/DVD and samples of self-developed teaching materials are strongly recommended.

Tagalog/Filipino Language Lecturer, 2008-2009

University of California, Berkeley

The Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a position as Tagalog language lecturer for the Academic Year 2008/2009 (from August 2008 through to May 2009). The appointee will teach two five-unit undergraduate courses per semester, specifically Introductory Tagalog (1A and 1B), and Intermediate Tagalog (10A and 10B). This appointment is for one academic year only.

Applicants must possess native or near-native fluency in Tagalog. Preference will be given to candidates with prior teaching experience in Tagalog. An M.A. in an appropriate field is desired, but not necessary. The salary will be commensurate with teaching experience. The appointee will qualify for benefits including health coverage.

Applications should include: 1) a brief statement of teaching interests and approaches including samples of past syllabi, 2) a curriculum vitae, and 3) names and full mailing addresses for three referees.

Scenes from a revolutionary Indonesian opera parallel scenes from this saga of a Javanese family threatened by division and break-down in communication between family members.The mother is potentially the unifying force.
