In Memoriam - Rozanna Brown

We received this announcement from our friends at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies-UCLA <cseas@international.ucla.edu>

It is with deepest sadness that we must announce the untimely death on May 14, 2008 of UCLA Art History alumna Dr. Roxanna Brown, world-renowned expert on SEA ceramics, curator of the Southeast Asian Ceramics Museum at Bangkok University and editor of their excellent newsletter, available online at online.

She died in Seattle reportedly of an infection brought on by a perforated ulcer while in federal custody on a very dubious indictment. After her death, the charges were dropped. She had gone to Seattle to present a paper on SEA ceramics at a conference co-sponsored by UCLA and the University of Washington. The best coverage of the tragic circumstances surrounding her arrest and death is available from the website of the Seattle Times . Type the name Roxanna Brown into their search engine. A 2004 article about Roxanna's pathbreaking research on SEA trade ceramics is available on our website here. Roxanna's brother Fred Brown has posted a moving portrait of her early life as a reporter during the Vietnam War on YouTube. You can view it here.  Anyone who would like to sign a condolence letter to Roxanna's family, or a petition calling for a full investigation into the circumstances of her death, or to contribute to a fund for her family's expenses related to her death, please contact Prof. Justin McDaniel at UC Riverside <justinm@ucr.edu>.

The Idea of Indonesia
By R.E. Elson

bookIndonesia the nation-state is a miraculous and unlikely construction. At first sight, the material for national unity could not be more unpromising; its history is marred by deep and often bloody internal disputation based on ideology, ethnicity, religion, and region. Yet Indonesia, as concept and nation-state, endures and is, perhaps, beginning once again to thrive. The author seeks to discover the origin of the idea of Indonesia in the mid-nineteenth century and explores its often vexed and troubled trajectory through to the present time. He examines why Indonesia exists, against the odds, as a nation-state, and in what different forms it has existed, seeking to explain the nation's character as it has struggled for unity and purpose.

From Parastatals to Private Trade: Lessons from Asian Agriculture
By Shahdur Rashid et al. (Editors)

In this book, the editors pose three general questions: Why must parastatal-centred policies in Asia change, when should policy change occur, and should such change happen gradually or abruptly? Experts in agricultural policy use case studies from South Asia (Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan) and Southeast Asia (Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam_ to answer these questions and a concluding chapter synthesizes these countries' experiences with price stabilization programs.

Ancient Sukhothai: Thailand's cultural heritage
By Dawn Rooney

book

This guide covers the history and art of the early Kingdom of Sukhothai, which was situated in the fertile Yorn River basis of north-central Thailand and is renowned for artistic achievements in the mid-13th and 14th centuries. Influences from earlier inhabitants of the area and neighboring kingdoms were overlaid with Theravada Buddhist ideas from Sinhalese culture to create a unique style that is recognized today as 'classic' Thai art. The author takes the reader on a journey to 80 temples at Sukhothai, Si Satchanalai and Kamphaeng Phet as well as highlighting masterpieces from three museum collections.
