bookThailand and World War II
By Direk Jayanama (Edited by Jane Keyes)

In this book the author provides a unique, first-hand account of Thailand's diplomatic, military and economic history between 1938 and 1948. The author was Deputy Prime Minister when Thailand was forced on 8 December 1941 to accede to Japan's request that its troops be permitted safe passage through Thai territory on their way to attack Singapore. Jayanama's remarkable skills were employed to their greatest extent in the immediate post-war years. He not only helped bring the state of war with Britain and Australia to a successful conclusion, but he also played a major role in enabling Thailand to obtain admittance to the United Nations in 1948 and resume its full standing in the community of nations.

Print and Power: Confucianism, Communism, and Buddhism in the making of modern Vietnam
By Shawn Frederick McHale

bookIn this ambitious and path-breaking book, the author challenges long held views that define modern Vietnamese history in terms of anticolonial nationalism and revolution. He argues instead for a historiography that does not overstress either the role of politics in general, or Communism in particular. Using a wide range of sources from Vietnam, France and the United States, many of them previously unexploited, he shows how the use of printed matter soared between 1920 and 1945 and in the process transformed Vietnamese public life and shaped the modern Vietnamese consciousness.
