Ghosts of War in Vietnam By Heonik Kwon
This is a
study of the Vietnamese experiences and memory of the Vietnam War through the
lens of popular imaginings about the wandering souls of the war dead.
These ghosts of war play an important part in postwar Vietnamese historical
narrative and imagination and the author explores the intimate ritual ties with
those unsettled identities which still survive in Vietnam today as well as the
actions of those who hope to liberate these hidden but vital historical
presences from their uprooted social existence.
Khmer Gold: Gifts for the Gods By Emma C. Bunker and Douglas Latchford
Featured here are gold artifacts from the people
who founded the Khmer kingdom. Pieces are examined thoroughly for the
techniques used in their manufactures and their functions. Extensive
explanations of the skills of the Khmer goldsmiths and the Khmer technology of
gold working is given. Historical and cultural context is presented for better
understanding and appreciation of art objects, as well as an interpretation of
gold's place in Khmer culture.
Globalization and Its Counter-Forces in Southeast Asia By Terrence Chong
This volume is a collection of essays from a diverse group of
scholars. Collectively, they present a multidimenensional perspective of globalization in Southeast Asia.
They delve into the political, economic, security, social and cultural
dimensions of globalization and local responses, offering evidence of complex
interfacing between the global and the local, thus championing the need for a
multidisciplinary approach to globalization studies. This volume depicts
globalization as an uneven and, sometimes, undesired process, and resists the
temptation for easy conclusions to the challenges facing the region
today.
Hindu-Buddhist Art of Vietnam: Treasures from Cham By Emmanuel Guillon
This volume is the most substantial book to be published in English
on the art of remarkable Champa civilization. Cham art is unmistakable and
individualistic, vigorous and even dramatic in its rendering of movement.
Mostly carved in sandstone and in high relief, its sculptures represent the
main Hindu and Buddhist dieties, real and fabulous animals in combative poses,
and flying celestial beings and dancers. Richly illustrated with views of the
monuments and the superb countryside in which they were built, this book brings
to life a brilliant civilization.
Muslim Women and Sports in the Malay World: The Crossroads of Modernity and Faith By Wirdati Mohammad Radzi
This book examines the challenges faced by young Muslim female
athletes from Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia in competitive sports. After
presenting a valuable socio-historical survey of the Malay world before, during
and after colonization, the author focuses in on contemporary social dynamics,
including the emergence of Muslim women competing at the international level.
Through surveys and interviews conducted at the Twenty-Second Southeast Asian
Games in Hanoi,
she captures the athletes' experiences and perspectives as they compete, often
under rules that conflict with Islamic practice.
