Call for Reviews and Essays
Education about Asian/ Asian Educational Media Service
Spring 2008 Special Section

This special multimedia section will be published in cooperation with the University of Illinois-­based Asian Educational Media Service (AEMS) in the spring 2008 issue. Reviews may address the use of feature films, documentaries, CD-­ROMs, pod casts, and Web sites in teaching about Asia, with an emphasis upon classroom use.

Reviews should run approximately 500 words (two double-­spaced manu­script pages); essays should run about 1,000 words (four double-­spaced manuscript pages).

Aspects of Archaeometallurgy in South and Southeast Asia: A study of Metal Objects from North India and Thailand

The book offers a synthesis of the available scientific and archaeological data on the study of copper and iron objects from northern India particularly, the Middle Ganga Plain and their relation with South East Asian sites, particularly on the issue of tin.

The book examines the most recent research into the quantitative and structural studies of metals.

William J. Gedney's Comparative Tai Source Book

This volume provides accurate and reliable data from 1,159 common cognates found in 19 dialects from the Tai language family. Originally collected by the Tai linguist, the late William J. Gedney, the data are organized into the three branches of the Tai language family, the Southwestern, the Central and the Northern, to facilitate comparisons among the various sound systems within the individual branches and within the Tai family as a whole.

Ten Years After: Reformasi and New Social Movements in Indonesia, 1998 - 2008
UC Berkeley-UCLA Joint Conference

April 25-26, 2008

This conference seeks to examine the new forces that have emerged and transformations that have occurred in Indonesia since the collapse of the authoritarian New Order regime of President Suharto in May 1998.

Specific topics suggested for presentations include agrarian movements, contending histories, cultural transformations, religious movements, labor movements, NGO advocacy and activism, and political parties and political change. Abstracts (up to 500 words) should include name, affiliation and contact information.

2008 Graduate Student Conference

Submissions from graduate students at any stage engaged in original research related to Southeast Asia are welcomed. Graduate students working in the following disciplines as well as other related fields that contribute to the understanding of Southeast Asia are encouraged to apply: history, literature, art history, sociology, musicology, religion, anthropology, archeology, architectural history, gender studies, political science, economics, linguistics and literature, etc.

UH Library Database on Islam

Our SEA collection library team has been creating an online database of periodical articles and articles in anthologies on Islam in Southeast Asia (as well as a database on Buddhism in Southeast Asia). The database is still under construction but is useable. It has 500 entries as of now.

Kyoto Reviews of Southeast Asia

This latest issue of Kyoto Review of Southeast Asia posted a double issue on culture (No. 8/9, March/October 2007) has been uploaded.

It features essays on Philippine and Thai literature, modern Malaysian Islamic music and colonial Indonesian musical culture, Indonesian museums, theater collaboration between Japan and Southeast Asia, and Japanese pop culture.

The issue includes short book reviews, essays on Indonesian Muslim intellectuals and Malay culture in southern Thailand, and reprints by a noted Thai academic, a controversial Thai essayist, and a highly-respected Filipina nun-activist, etc.

An unusual adaptation of Shakespeare's most musical and magical play.  Guest artist Larry Reed will fuse Balinese and Elizabethan elements with his hallmark shadowcasting method, which utilizes a giant screen and live performers to create a magical shadow theatre performance. The production will also feature live
music by the UH Balinese Gamelan Ensemble under the direction of guest artist I. Nyoman Sumandhi.

This fall the Center's popular Southeast Asian Film Series will include The Story of Pao (Vietnam), Mekong Full Moon Party (Thailand), the epic film Courtesan (Indonesia), Indio Nacional (Philippines), Me...Myself (Thailand) in addition to films from Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia!
