Please come and enjoy a unique visual and aural introduction to two aspects of Indonesian culture in this concert featuring both Javanese and Balinese gamelan music performed on the Music Department's exquisite sets of gamelan instruments!

Visiting Balinese
master musician I Nyoman Sumandhi will be directing the UH Balinese Gamelan Ensemble in preparation for next semester's production of A Balinese Tempest.

Philippines Fellowship Program

The Asian Cultural Council (ACC) established the Philippines Fellowship Program in 2000 in order to offer more opportunities for artists, scholars, and cultural institutions in the Philippines to participate in its grants program. The Philippines Fellowship Program has been created in partnership with the Asian Cultural Council Philippines Foundation in Manila, which collaborates with the ACC in raising funds and making grants in support of the dedicated arts community in the Philippines.

An unusual adaptation of Shakespeare's most musical and magical play.  Guest artist Larry Reed will fuse Balinese and Elizabethan elements with his hallmark shadowcasting method, which utilizes a giant screen and live performers to create a magical shadow theatre performance. The production will also feature live
music by the UH Balinese Gamelan Ensemble under the direction of guest artist I. Nyoman Sumandhi.

This fall the Center's popular Southeast Asian Film Series will include The Story of Pao (Vietnam), Mekong Full Moon Party (Thailand), the epic film Courtesan (Indonesia), Indio Nacional (Philippines), Me...Myself (Thailand) in addition to films from Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia!
