Advanced Thai Summer Study

Aloha

This recently re-discovered classic from 1950 showcases the early artistic talents of a 21 year-old P. Ramlee, who would later go on to become the biggest film and music star in Malaysia's history. Shot in Singapore, Aloha uses a Hawaii theme to tell the story of a young woman named Aloha who falls into the clutches of a local gangster. The film, featuring eight songs played by musicians trained on the ukelele and slack key guitar, is a window to the transmission of Hawaiian culture into Southeast Asia in the post-World War II era.

The energy and noise of street life combined with the sensitive beauty of Gauger's vision make his film both a love story and a valentine to Vietnam.

Sleepwalking Through the Mekong

An engagingly different rock 'n' roll documentary, Sleepwalking Through the Mekong spotlights California combo Dengue Fever on tour in Cambodia in 2005.  The band consists of five guys from Long Beach and the dynamic Cambodian-born songbird Chhom Nimol, who perform a repertoire of '60s and '70s Khmer pop classics featuring songs made famous by icons Ros Seray Sothea and Sinn Sisamouth.
