Antiquing Pearls of Wisdom:
1. In 1890 the government required all imported porcelain to be marked with the country of origin. Items marked simply Germany, China, Austria, etc, can be dated between 1890 and 1910.
In 1910, the government required the country of origin to be preceded by the words "made in". When you see the words 'Made in" you know the piece was made after 1910.
2. In this country, after 1865, all sterling items were required to be marked either 925 or "Sterling". Without those marks, consider it to be silverplate.
3. Lead content differentiates crystal from glass.
Crystal is clearer and heavier than glass. When thumped, crystal will ring.
