Operation Hug-A-Hero

Did you know that April is the Month of the Military Child?  The Month of the Military Child was designated 26 years ago and, in 2012, we will celebrate and honor the contributions and sacrifices that our nation's nearly 2 million military children make on behalf of our nation.  How thankful we are to have so many courageous and strong military daughters as Girl Scouts!

OPERATION Hug-A-Hero, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is proud and humbled to support the children of our nation's heroes.  Since its establishment in 2009, OPERATION Hug-A-Hero has raised funds to provide hundreds of Hug-A-Hero dolls at no cost to the children of heroes that are deployed, in harm's way each and every day, or have fallen in the line of duty.  The Hug-A-Hero doll (sometimes referred to as the "daddy doll") is no ordinary doll! The doll's design features the head-to-toe photograph of the recipient's mommy or daddy (usually dressed in uniform), and a pocket in the back to save pictures or letters from their loved one. It is one-of-a-kind for each child!

Please join us in celebrating our military children this month and spread the word!  If your troop would like to lead a service or fundraising project, please visit us at www.operationhugahero.org.

Let's Celebrate our AWESOME Volunteers!

yard signApril is Volunteer Appreciation Month, a time set aside to honor those who give of their time and energy to serve a greater cause. We know our Girl Scout volunteers are awesome! A special thank you goes to:

  • Those "worker bee" volunteers - adults and girls - who made the Centennial Extravaganza such a success!  There were over 3,000 people who attended the Extravaganza on March 17 in Gonzales, and it was the efforts of the service unit volunteers who made the event so memorable and inspiring!  A heartfelt thank you for the fabulous work you did! It was great!
  • Our Extravaganza collaborators were also tremendous, as was WAFB news anchor Cheryl Mercedes, and our presenting sponsor Winn-Dixie.
  • The Girl Scouts who participated in the 2012 Girl Scout Cookie Program and the dedicated parents and volunteers who assisted them in making this year's sale a success. Once again, you surpassed yourselves!
  • Join us on Saturday, May 12 at the council's annual adult recognition event that honors volunteers and community collaborators for their outstanding work and devotion to Girl Scouts. This year's theme is "Let's Celebrate." The event will be held at the Clarion Inn Conference Center, Gonzales LA from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.  Food and refreshments will be served from 9:30 to 10 during check-in. To register for the event download the registration form located on the council website at www.gsle.org. For more information contact Jill Pollard, Vice President Program and Volunteerism, at 800-644-7571, ext. 2238.
