Greetings!
Too often we under-estimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. --

North Lawndale's 2011 B-Ball on the Block Demonstrates Community!
This year's Ball on the Block was a huge success! The tournament was held at six different locations in the community and the excitement and energy continued to build each week. The young people were so eager to play that some of them arrived an hour before the games started! The tournament gave them something positive to do and created opportunities for them to interact with supportive and caring adults. Many of them developed relationships that will last long after the tournament is over.
We are thankful for the many organizations and individuals that helped make B-Ball possible. Andre Bryant organized the games, supervising coaches and referees. Pastor Joseph Atkins of Lawndale Community Church, opened the games with prayer and coached several teams. Darren Tillis of State Farm, one of the organizations that supports B-Ball on the Block, ran errands, assisted with registration, coached and mentored teams. Willie Porter of The Goodie Shop, transported rims and equipment, made our t-shirts and coached. Quinethel Brown of Sisters In Training, manned the registration table every week. Tonja Harris of the Mirror Project, Jason Bremen of CYC Polk Bros., Tawanna Calvin of the Cullerton Street 4300 Block Club, Mr. Willie Green of Greater Open Door Church, Aqueiter Rice of Lawndale Christian Residential Services, Atneada Nance and Angela Williams of LCDC, along with teachers from KIPP Ascend Charter School and many others, assisted, supported and gave their time to ensure the success of this event. B-Ball on the Block is one of those initiatives that showcases what can happen when the community comes together, allowing our youth to have fun and an impactful six weeks. Way to go North Lawndale!!!
For more information about B-Ball on the Block or if you would like to volunteer for next year's tournament please contact Tracie Worthy or Tameeka Christian at 773-762-8889. |

The K-Town Historic District held its first walking tour on Saturday, July 23, 2011. The walking tour provided an overview of the district's remarkable architectural heritage and discussed the neighborhood's distinctive social evolution. Local block clubs and concerned neighbors in the district formed a committee to bring awareness to the importance of maintaining and redeveloping the entire historic district, utilizing safety, beautification, information and marketing. The tour began and ended in Unity Garden located on 19th Street between Kostner and Kildare. | Caring People Outreach Provides Jobs for Youth
The Caring People Outreach (CPO), formerly known as the 1600-1800 Central Park Block Club, teaches and trains young adults the importance of community involvement in North Lawndale. This summer, participants worked on beautification projects that included landscaping parkways, maintaining Lawndale's African Garden, cleaning vacant lots, painting wrought iron fences and assisting senior citizens with yard work. CPO empowers young adults by teaching them job readiness, employment skills and resume writing. The youth also participated in the K-Town Historic District's walking tour and assisted with clean-up of the route. This program teaches youth that a beautiful neighborhood contributes to the health of a community, and a clean neighborhood can reduce criminal activity.
