Small Business Outreach
Small BusinessIn the coming months LCDC's NCP and Real Estate Development staff will be joining forces to build a stronger economic development outreach plan. Kendra and Tameeka will be meeting with current business owners, providing assistance for those interested in starting a business and working with North Lawndale economic development stakeholders to address economic concerns in our neighborhood.

In addition to a stronger outreach effort, LCDC, with support from LISC and numerous community organizations, will be working to implement recommendations of the MetroEdge program.  MetroEdge is the national market research and assessment program at LISC.  The program combines innovative market research, quantitative analysis, and grassroots community engagement to correct misconceptions of urban markets, identify hidden assets, and help communities exercise more control over their economic futures.

If you are interested in these initiatives please contact Kendra Smith or Tameeka Christian at 773-762-8889.

Hip-Hop Revival
"Clap your hands everybody Kurtis Blow
If you got what it takes
'Cause I'm Kurtis Blow and I want you to know
that these are the breaks" - Kurtis Blow

The Legendary hip-hop artist Kurtis Blow headlined the 2nd Annual Hip Hop Revival for The House Covenant Church. The two-day event was a success. On Friday June, 25, in front of the Firehouse Community Art Center, an action packed MC battle, culminated in an awesome performance by Kurtis Blow, where he even break danced in true b-boy fashion.

The second day of the revival included a b-boy competition in which  break-dancing crews competed for an honorary prize.  The revival was a celebratory event for the Lawndale community providing a positive cultural, and artistic outlet that is in direct opposition to the violence that is prevalent in the community.  The ultimate purpose of the Revival was to bring hip-hop back to its roots of peace, love, unity, having fun and of course repping Jesus to the fullest! That's the biggest break we could get.

Block Club Outreach
Block club InitiativeNorth Lawndale's Block Club Initiative is designed to assist concerned residents who would like to form, re-organize or identify resources for their block clubs. The Initiative is intended to allow residents to identify the needs on their block and work strategically to address those needs.  The Block Club Kick-Off Meeting held on Saturday, April 10, 2010, included 70 participants representing 43 Blocks.  The number of people that attended indicates that residents want to organize to create a safer community.

LCDC along with CAPS and the Chicago Police Department have began to meet with block club members to assess and strategize on how to address the needs of blocks in North Lawndale. The goal is to promote safety and beautification while giving neighbors the opportunity to get to know each other.

For more information about the Block Club Initiative please contact Tameeka Christian or Tracie Worthy at 773-762-8889.
