Greetings,
Thanks to all who keep sharing Serendipity Traveler with women travelers and to the women who are traveling with us.  Women today are experiencing places our mother's had just dreamed of.  We all know how grand it feels to travel !!

Autumn in New England

In the Northeast, autumn and her wonders are still ablaze.  I just got back from a glorious time in Vermont and New Hampshire.  Crisp clear days, apple pie, apple cider, apple butter, apple crumble, applesauce, are all part of the many ways to enjoy the apple harvest which coincides with autumn in New England.  The landscapes are painterly with starkly vivid, muted washed colors all a thousand shades of gold, orange, red, and yellow.  If you missed our Autumn in New England trip this year, check the dates for our annual 2009 Autumn in New England meandering.  We are also offering a long weekend in Boston next October.

Bless the Farmers, Cheese makers, and Bakers All
A wave of entrepreneurs offering us their home grown, home made artisan food is making its presence felt across the country from Cape Cod to California.  Weekly farmer's markets are sprouting everywhere and what a blessing to our lives.  The healthful food grown and presented with the authenticity of knowing who grew or made what we are eating is a return to the lives of our grandmothers who knew the butcher, baker and milkman who delivered milk fresh each day.  Thursdays are the farmer's market day in both Nova Scotia and on Cape Ann in Massachusetts.  Every Thursday morning, we fill our canvas bag with the best of the locally grown.  We have feasted on the finest of artisan cheeses, organic eggs, tomatoes, Wanda's spinach (which she must sprinkle with fairy dust), pickles, jams, jellies, and of course the decadent almond pastries from Julien's patiserrie as well as strawberries, blueberries, gooseberries, olive bread, peaches and cream corn, golden honey and organic garlic bulbs that last all winter. Typically, friends come for dinner on Thursday evening.....what could be simpler... flowers for the soul, fish for our hearts and spinach to rekindle Mum's words to, "eat your spinach"...!  You can probably gather that, when we travel, fresh quality food is important.  I consider where we eat an integral ingredient to our travels and search the local bests to experience the flavors and recipes of a region.  Slow food, slow travel, good company and great times wherever we travel.

Spring Weekend in Charleston

The charm of the south and the most idyllic time of year to visit, spring finds the gardens in full bloom.  We have coordinated our trip to coincide with the local Charleston Garden Clubs 74th annual Historic House and Garden Tour.  We will also enjoy a day sampling the essence of well preserved Savannah, Georgia.  Due to the limited supply of tickets for the garden club tour, we will not be able to take last minute reservations.  Please reserve early for this trip.  Enough said.  Y'all come join us as we celebrate spring in Charleston.

World Heritage Destinations

The possibilities in train stations the world over never cease to stir me.  Looking at all the boards, times and destinations, I feel wonder much like a little girl at the chocolate counter.  Which one will I choose?  Looking up, I see London, Zurich, Florence, Munich, Paris, San Francisco, New York, Washington, Boston, Banff, Vancouver or Victoria flashing on the departure or arrival screens.  Just being there gets my spirit moving.  I realize how much more of the world there is to experience.  Union Station in Washington, D.C. is celebrating its 100th anniversary this month.  Just a few decades ago, the magnificent Beaux Arts building was in disrepair and ruin.  The trains in Europe are the heartbeat of travel and when we travel there I use trains to get us from London to Paris, from Paris to Provence and from Florence to Venice.  The UNESCO World Heritage committee recently included two lines of the Rhaetian Railway in southeastern Switzerland to its World Heritage listing.  The Swiss railway is only one of three railways in the world to be considered "universally outstanding".  Of course, you pack lighter when you travel by train.  Ask for a window seat, sit back, snooze, read, or, as I do, look out the window at the sights all with stories to explore - another adventure.  Serendipity Traveler plans our itineraries to include World Heritage Sites when possible.  We would like hearing where you want to go by train, air,  land or ship.  Drop me a note with DESTINATIONS as your subject line to info@serendipitytraveler.com.  The first three responses received will receive a free copy of the book Best of Women's Travel Writing 2008.
