DiRECT ARTS

Amazing that it's been a whole year since Take Two began! It's been a roller-coaster year with the reading and screening of 18 plays and films spanning the 1960s to 2007. Over 50 brilliant actors have graced our stages and we were also pleased to welcome the ACLU and Amnesty International for some rousing discussions.

Rounding out our first year, we'll be reading Naomi Iizuka's wonderfully evocative and highly intelligent 36 VIEWS with a stellar cast that includes three-time Obie Award winner George Bartenieff.

Come be a part of our last event until the fall!

Take Two June 10th!
Victoria Linchong's DOUBLE DEALING and Naomi Iizuka's 36 VIEWS
utamaro Art, ambition and the shifting sands of perception are at the center of our screening and reading this month.

In Victoria Linchong's short film, DOUBLE DEALING, the enigmatic artist known only by her initials, A.K.A. grapples with extreme xenophobia just before a big art opening, as her best friend grapples with his not-so- secret jealousy of her success. A finalist in the 2nd Annual 72 Hour Film Shootout sponsored by Asian Cinevision and MTV, DOUBLE DEALING screened at the 2005 Asian- American International Film Festival.

Riffing on questions of authenticity, we follow the screening with a reading of Naomi Iizuka's 36 VIEWS, in which the discovery of a Heian era pillow book turns the Asian academic world upside down. Positing that love and art are partly based on a willingness to see what isn't there, 36 VIEWS asks what is the difference between the real thing and a very good fake? And what is the anxiety that propels people to privilege authenticity over other values?

36 VIEWS will be directed by Joseph Ward and feature Edward Vassallo, Nancy Wu, Theo Stockman, Jenne Vath, Victoria Linchong, and three time Obie Award winner George Bartenieff as Owen Mathiassen.

Don't Miss Out in June
Our friends Pun Bandhu and Peter Kim are in Ensemble Studio Theatre's Marathon B, currently running until June 20th. EST has consistently produced amazing plays in its 30 years and this marathon looks particularly exciting, with new works by Neil La Bute, Taylor Mac and Lloyd Suh.

Eric Lockley who performed in TAP THAT at Take Two 11/13 developed LAST LAUGH, a provocative one- man play over at the Experimental Theater Wing at NYU, which then was produced at La Mama and is now coming to P.S. 122 for the Solo Nova Arts Festival. Two black performers begin to confuse performance and reality as they attempt to please the public, pay the bills, battle stereotypes, and somehow remain true to their selves. We've heard amazing things about it and it sure seems to have legs! June 18, 20, 21, and 23 - buy tickets today and save $5 by typing in the code SOLO.

Friday, June 27th, Satochi Kon will be at Lincoln Center for a discussion after a screening of his film PAPRIKA, a film noir anime about the theft of a machine that allows therapists to enter their patient's dreams. American cartoons don't come anywhere near to the level of profundity and sophistication of Japanese anime - Kon is one of the most imaginative masters of the art and we're excited to meet the man who sees the nightmare in a row of waving blank-faced Hello Kitties.

TAKE OUT, a new film by Sean Baker and Shih Ching Tsao looks amazing, a cinema verite day-in-the-life of a Chinese delivery guy in dire need of $800 in order to make a payment on his smuggling debt. A Q&A with the filmmakers and lead actors will follow several screenings on Sunday, June 8th.

Stay tuned for the trailer of GILDED CAGE, coming soon to a computer near you!
