Greetings!

Jackie Shor in her book "The Overworked American" states that the average worker is spending 164 more hours a year on the job than 20 years ago.  No wonder so many of us are tired!  This edition of Healthy Reflections newsletter explores the signs and symptoms of burnout.  As always, I'd love to hear your feedback on the topic at: info@mentalhealthcorner.com.

Are You Burning Out?

The following are questions that indicate changes that may signal burnout.  Assign a number from 1 (no change) to 5 (great deal of change) to indicate the degree of change you perceive.  When completed, total your score and compare to the below "Burnout Scale".

 1.  Do you tire more easily?  Do you feel fatigued rather than energetic?

 2.  Are people annoying you by telling you, "you don't look so good lately?"

 3.  Are you working harder and accomplishing less and less?

 4.  Are you increasingly cynical and disenchanted?

 5.  Are you often filled by sadness you can't explain?

 6.  Are you forgetful (appointments, deadlines, personal possessions)?

 7.  Are you increasingly irritable, short-tempered, or disappointed in the
       people around you?

 8.  Are you seeking out close friends and family members less frequently?

 9.  Are you too busy to do routine things like make phone calls, read reports
     or send out birthday cards?

10.  Are you suffering from physical complaints? (aches, pains, headaches, a
       lingering cold)

11.  Do you feel disoriented when the activity of the day comes to a halt?

12.  Is joy elusive for you?

13.  Are you unable to laugh at jokes about yourself?

14.  Does sex seem like more trouble than it's worth?

15.  Do you have little to say to people?

 The Burnout Scale
 0-25..... You are doing fine.
26-35.... There are things you should be watching.
36-50.... You are a candidate.
51-65.... You are burning out.
Over 65....You are in a dangerous place, threatening to your physical and mental well being.
