Greetings!
Ah, fall! Finally, the days are getting crisper and the nights cooler. Almost everywhere you look, you can find a pumpkin for sale. Fall festivals and Halloween can't be far behind. There's a certain slowing down physically and emotionally that can occur during this time of year. Sometimes, that can lead to a sense of reflection about the direction of our lives. I recently ran across a wonderful poem that speaks to the struggles and disappointments we often experience in our lives as well as the strength that we sometimes forget that we possess. I hope you find some nuggets of wisdom in this poem.

After Awhile
After awhile, you learn the subtle difference between
holding a hand and chaining a soul.
And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning
And company doesn't mean security.
And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts
And presents aren't promises.
And you begin to accept your defeats with your
head up and your eyes ahead.
With the grace of a woman or man.
Not with the grief of a child.
And you learn to build your roads on today.
Because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans.
And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight.
And after awhile you learn that even sunshine
burns if you ask too much.
So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul.
Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure.
That you really are strong.
And that you really do have worth.
And you learn...
And you learn...
With every failure you learn.

Stress Tip:
by G. Gaynor McTigue Always view yourself as ahead, not behind. This small change in perspective can alter your approach to everything. When you perpetually see yourself behind schedule, never caught up, forever lacking in something...your emphasis is always on need. And that unrelenting, unhealthy pressure on you. But view yourself as ahead of the game (and most of us truly are) and the pressure almost immediately eases, and your needs diminish, because you're grateful for what you already have. You can move forward confidently from a position of strength, rather than struggle from one of weakness. It's all in the way you look at it. Why make yourself crazy?

Quotes To Ponder:
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. --- Leo Buscaglia
Security is mostly a superstition. It doesn't exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.
--- Helen Keller
If you don't like something change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude. --- Maya Angelou

Easy Ways To Make Children Smarter
Scientific research shows that intelligence is both genetic and environmental. Intelligence is also not fixed but can be increased because the brain develops new neurons and interconnections with stimulation. A supportive environment fosters numerous aspects of intelligence. In our continuing series, this edition explores the relationship between proper nutrition and academic performance.
Proper Nutrition Improves Health And Nerve Conduction
Studies have shown that diets high in sugar, trans fatty acids, and salt decreased health in children. Junk food failed to provide sufficient iron for healthy brain development, resulting in poor nerve impulses. Children with nutritional deficiency also missed school more often because of illness and fell behind their peers in academic performance.
