One of our resident artists, Ami Spangler, paints, sculpts, farms using biodynamic principles, dances, practices yoga, and now carves beautiful wood doors!
This one, the entrance to Dancing Colors studio (and her home) has symbols to represent various elements and members of the community. This is truly art with heart!

Hummingbird Happenings
|
Bill and Michael are cleaning up the Rio la Casa and building new bridges at Hummingbird.
|
From end-to-end, Hummingbird's 486 acres includes about 1 mile of winding river, which runs through and along several private residences, the campground and the ceremonial grounds/sweat lodge area. Over the course of the past few summers, all of the bridges have been swept away due to high rains, and big log jams have occurred as well. So, Bill and Michael have initiated a river clean-up this winter and have already completed one bridge and are re-building 2 more, as well as removing these huge logs.
This is not a community project, but these two members took initiative and felt an inner YES to support the community in this way. That's how work gets done around here...it's not always a community workday, or a project that's been discussed and planned out. Spontaneous acts of service occur quite regularly around here as well!

Ceremony & Celebration
From the moment I was offered the opportunity to write an article about the culture we are co-creating at Hummingbird, I was preoccupied thinking about the birthday rites-of-passage ceremony that we had in January for Marie Ruster, a Hummingbird steward. You might wonder, why was this so important to me? Until moving to Hummingbird I didn't realize how I longed for more meaning in my life.
At Hummingbird we create ceremonies to honor special occasions, passages, blessings, acknowledgments, mistakes, cycles of nature and differentiations to mention a few. Article Continues >

In 1993 a core group within Global Family co-created the following "Eight Bottom Lines" in service to their newly established business, Global Family Enterprises (GFE). Several decades prior to the concept of the triple bottom line "people, profit and planet" being honored in the marketplace, this team recognized the importance of broadening its focus from short term monetary gain to long term, life sustaining value. "A community meeting was scheduled the night we arrived at Hummingbird and we were invited to attend. As we are in the very early stages of considering becoming community members, I was very curious to watch the interchanges among the residents. Many had been away for various reasons so it was a reunion of sorts. What I observed truly amazed me. It seemed everyone really liked everyone else and was truly glad to see them. It was like a family reunion for the family we would like to have; one that everyone loved, liked and enjoyed being around one another. At the potluck after the meeting, I said 'I didn't even know such a thing existed!' It was deeply touching to see.
Sitting at the potluck, I found myself having a deep genuine conversation with someone across the table. Christine next to me was doing the same. Again we both found this quite remarkable.
Saturday started with a beautiful hike and exploration of the beaver dams. We spent the remainder of the weekend visiting with and getting to know the community members. It was a love fest. We found a kinship with several community members and spent time sharing our hearts. All welcomed us like family. We also attended a community meditation which left most of us in tears.
I have lived in numerous ashrams and meditation centers but I have never seen anything close to resembling the web of love, friendship and care that we experienced in our brief stay at Hummingbird. We look forward to returning at the next convenient time."
~Christine and Gautama visited Hummingbird late in 2010 and plan to return to further explore what it would take to move here.
