It's time to start planning for your summer travel. Here are some good reminders for anyone traveling abroad:
1. Passport. Check your passport and make sure it is valid for 6 months beyond departure date. 2. Insurance policy information. Check with your insurance company as to how they handle medical situations when you're out of the country. 3. Copy of passport.Take a copy of your passport with you, and keep it in a waterproof baggie (ID information pages). Keep this in a separate place. It can be a big help if your passport gets lost or stolen. 4. Airline tickets. Print full itineraries for e-tickets and have these easily available. 5. Copy of airline ticket pages.Store these with your copy of passport, in waterproof baggie. 6. ATM card and/or credit card / Cash.When traveling abroad, ATM cards are the easiest way to exchange money. Do not bring any bills larger than $50 as you will not be able to cash them. 7. International Phone CardFor calls home. Keep a list of emergency contacts and family members with phone numbers in a safe place (with passport copy), as well, in case something happens and someone else in your group needs to find this information. 8. Foreign Language Dictionary and/or Phrase Book (when applicable)It's always helpful to know simple phrases to help you get around if you get lost or need help. 9. When traveling it's important to honor and respect the laws and customs of the lands you are visiting.You may wish to read travel guides, research the internet, etc. to become more familiar with the culture of the lands you are traveling to. 10. Be prepared for the unexpected. Don't expect things to be like they are "back home". You are in another country and everything is different. In many countries people have a different sense of time than we do, and schedules aren't as important to them. Getting mad when someone is late will do you no good. If you are flexible and go with the flow you will have a much better experience.
