Data Centers Build vs. Outsource

We recently held a webinar focused on the total cost of ownership for Data Centers from a Build versus Outsource perspective. According to Cisco the average monthly IP traffic in 2014 will be equivalent to 12 billion DVDs crossing the Atlantic ocean each month. To futher illustrate the growing demand according to Admobs; Android and iPhone users spend over 79 mins/day using applications. Data CenterSo as the person responsible for the Data Center strategy and operations what is your first request internally? Well, "Scotty, I gotta have more power," as Captain Kirk would say comes to mind. Many companies are attempting to evaluate the cost of adding more capacity by either building or utilizing 3rd party's data centers. Of the 300+ attendees, over 56% said they did not have a methodology to evaluate this cost. In fact some 13% said they did not have the time to conduct an internal or even external assessment. So, how do you decide to expand, and in what timeframe? If you build for today's capacity you will miss the boat. If you over build, well not a good outcome.

The Telecommunications Expense Management (TEM) industry is seeing a major change as the top tier providers are all fighting to leverage their platforms and reduce competition. Recently Tangoe, the leading provider of TEM software, acquired HCL another TEM provider. The challenge everyone faces is how to migrate from existing systems to a new platform, or manage the whole process internally. The costs of internal versus external management is a question we get asked every day. The answer is simple - stay with your core strengths as a business and let the leaders in TEM deliver a quality service at a resonable price. TEM has been around for many years and although it is not the CIO's top project for the year, many companies can save significantly when deployting this solution.

On March 5th, our very own  Carrisa Baptiste volunteered to support a Women in Technology event called "Robochix" here in Atlanta at Wheeler High School. The purpose of the event was to encourage girls to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The day consisted of a panel discussion, on hands demonstrations and interaction with the many volunteers. "I really enjoyed supporting this great organization and hope that more girls will see the exciting world we can change", said Carrisa after the full days activities.

The Road to Best in Class Telecom Expense Management (TEM)

Road

Are you a communications service provider? From Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLEC) to Multiple System Operators (MSO) to Wireless Providers and Conferencing Companies, you may ask: What is this road and where is my company today? In the beginning most companies have primarily paper invoices, a lack of cost per unit view and very limited leverage of total spend with their vendors. Further down the road, companies have a unit cost view, have benchmarked their spend and completed significant procurement/RFP events. Higher performing companies select a TEM vendor or purchase software to manage this in house.
