PATCO Goes Green
PATCO recently began the process of recycling newspapers, glass and plastic with the placement of special trash receptacles at the Lindenwold, Ashland and Woodcrest Stations.  The special green receptacles with a recycling decal are located mostly on the station platforms although they will be available in other locations. The program will be expanded to include all other PATCO stations including the four subway stations in Philadelphia. PATCO now joins the DRPA's four bridge facilities and its headquarters One Port Center in Camden in implementing single stream municipal waste recycling.
PATCO is Your Ride to the Area's Festivals
Thanks to all who rode PATCO to the Haddonfield Craft Festival last month, hop onboard again in August for the Collingswood Crafts and Fine Art Festival.

More than 180 craft and fine artists from throughout the United States will gather along Haddon Avenue in downtown Collingswood for the festival August 14 and 15.

PATCO Subway Stations in line for Concourse Improvements
Two PATCO stations in Camden and all four in Philadelphia are getting a new look.  It's all part of a $9.6 million program to improve the concourses in Camden's City Hall Station and the Walter Rand Transportation Center as well as in the stations at 8th and Market and 9th/10th, 12th/13th, and 15th/16th and Locust in Philadelphia.  The concourse improvements at City Hall and 8th and Market are nearly complete.

This project will make the subway stations even more secure and serviceable through the installation of wall material, special flooring and environmentally friendly lighting.  The stations will also be easier to navigate with new signage

The remaining four subway stations, one in Camden and three in Philadelphia, should be upgraded by late spring.

Collingswood Viaduct Project Coming to a Close
Collingswood residents rejoice! Work is coming to an end on the rehabilitation of the track structure on the Collingswood Viaduct. For the last two years, contractors have been working to replace the aging fasteners with new track fasteners. This new system secures the track to the deck.  All the work should be done by the end of the month.

Next Stop, Airports
Airports may soon offer more than just air travel. Roger Yu of USA TODAY recently reported a new development in the world of transportation -- all-purpose transport hubs at airports. Cities such as Miami and Providence have caught on to the idea. According to the article, titled "Airports pitch sites as all-purpose transport hubs" the idea is to make the airport a central station where people go for a variety of choices in ground transportation. The day may come where residents in our area can ride via rail to Philadelphia International or Atlantic City airports not to catch a plane but to rent a car or catch national rail to get to another destination. Sound like a good idea? Tell us what you think.

Each year, public transportation households save almost $1,400 worth of gas. And taking public transportation can reduce the need for an additional car - an expense of almost $7,000!  In addition, taking public transportation reduces our nation's gas consumption by saving 1.4 billion gallons of gasoline a year - almost 4 million gallons a day!
