Kitchen Appliances Aren't What They Used to Be
...and that's good news! Manufacturers have made significant improvements to appliances enhancing convenience, efficiency and appearance during the last few years.
We've highlighted a few advances you may want to consider the next time you're in the market for a new range, refrigerator or dishwasher.

Shopping Wisely
When shopping for major kitchen appliances, consider your requirements (space, use, etc.) and budget as well as the manufacturer's warranty and reputation for service and reliability. Be practical, but don't settle for an appliance that doesn't quite meet your expectations just to save a few bucks. No one wants to live with a cooktop that is difficult to clean or doesn't deliver sufficient heat or a refrigerator with cramped or inconvenient storage. Appliances should last many years, so spending a little more no may be a better long term investment.
What's Hot.....
Versatility is a growing trend in ranges and ovens.
Electric stoves with coil burners are rapidly being replaced by smooth ceramic-glass cooktops that allow for the use of oversized skillets and are easier to clean. Many new models respond more rapidly to temperate changes for better cooking control.
Most serious chefs still prefer gas cooktops because of their instantaneous temperature regulation. The latest gas ranges feature level grates across the entire cooktop so pots and pans can be placed anywhere, much like the ceramic electric models.
When shopping for a range, consider safety in addition to function. Most gas cooktops have front burner controls, whereas most electric models' controls are on a rear panel. Although both types work well, front controls can pose a safety issue for small children.
The most interesting new technology in ranges is induction cooking, a process that magnetically excites steel or iron cookware to heat up. As with a gas cooktop, temperature changes are rapid, but there are no open flames or hot burners. Induction cooktops are also clean and energy-efficient.
Cooking and baking enthusiasts can enjoy the best of both worlds with gas/electric models that incorporate gas cooktop and electric oven. (GE Trivection ovens combine thermal, convection and microwave technology.
Keeping it Cool
Significant recent improvements have made modern refrigerators quieter and more energy-and space-efficient than those made a decade ago. In addition to traditional side-by-side and top- and bottom- freezer models, refrigerators with french doors and bottom freezer drawers are gaining popularity.
French-door units allow you to quickly reach items stored in the doors and can ease traffic jams in tight gallery-style kitchens. A freezer-drawer solves this problem because it glides out on rollers and the food is stored in baskets that can be reached from above.
Some innovative improvements include:
-
Door-mounted controls that eliminate the need to open the refrigerator to adjust the temperature.
-
Dual evaporators - one for the freezer and one for the refrigerator - that improve energy-efficiency and provide better humidity - and odor - control.
-
External ice and water dispensers with keypad controls and integral water filtration.
-
Door storage specifically designed to accommodate and properly cool beverage containers.
-
Sizes to fit any space, including models that match various counter depths.
At Renovisions, inc, we can design your new kitchen to accommodate panels for your refrigerator to match your cabinetry!
Cleaning Up
Like refrigerators, dishwashers have become more quiet, flexible, efficient and convenient - there are even models designed to fit beneath lower counters for homes that have been adapted for wheelchair accessibility. Soundproofing measures such as better insulation. refined spray-arm jets and quieter motors and plumbing components reduced the noise level of many new models to less than 50 decibels, about the same as a quiet refrigerator!
For expanded capacity, some models now feature three racks instead of the usual two, although they can also operate with only two racks to clean extra-large items. Another helpful feature: racks that are angled to prevent water from pooling on the bottom of bowls and glasses.
Automation technology has further enhanced the convenience of these machines. One GE model allows you to fill a reservoir with 45 ounces of detergent; the dishwasher automatically dispenses the correct amount and illuminates an LED indicator when it runs low. Some have computers to factor in conditions such as water hardness (which you program in), soil in the water and cycle selection so that they automatically clean at the most efficient level. |
