Black History Month

Ways to Celebrate Black History Month

No matter what your background, everyone can celebrate the importance of Black History Month. Honor the achievements and inventions of African Americans throughout the world as you enjoy learning about the people who made them happen.

Talk with your Little about the significance of recognizing these many contributions. Take time to applaud the achievements you discover that affect your everyday life, whether it's through art, film, literature, music, education, civil rights, sports or even food!

Match Support CornerBig Impact on School

Celebrating difference can help you and your Little get to know each other.

The variety of interests, backgrounds, and cultures we represent enriches who we are and how we relate to each other. We encourage you to learn about these differences with your Little and grow together in your appreciation of them and each other.

Here is an activity to try with your Little to learn more about who they are. Make a list of things you and your Little like and dislike. The topics could include things from your favorite to least favorite colors, types of food, movies, television shows and music. Take turns reading your list to each other. Use the time to demonstrate and discuss the fact that each person has individual tastes and that we don't agree on everything. At the same time, discuss the importance of tolerance and respect for viewpoints that differ from our own.

This is a great way to find out more about each other. The more you know about each other the more you will be able to support, encourage, and mentor your Little.
