Social Responsibility: the ethical and moral duties of individuals, institutions and corporations to contribute to the well-being of people and society. | |
Dear Friends,
Social Responsibility can be defined as the ethical and moral duties of individuals, institutions and corporations to contribute to the betterment of people and society. It is comprised of individual and corporate acts that recognize the rights of others and contribute to the well-being of all humankind. Individual acts of social responsibility are the other-centered decisions we make to positively impact people, communities and the planet. Corporate Social responsibility encompasses not only what companies do with their profits, but also how they make profits and how their business impacts their employees, consumers, families, the community in which they conduct business and the world at large. In the faith community is it not only how you serve your own members and build your congregation, but how you build out God's kingdom of love, justice and righteousness to promote the inherent value of every human being. In the realm of sports it involves how institutions, leagues and coaches support and implement the ideas that the social, emotional, educational and moral well-being of players is every bit as important as the team's win-loss record.
A growing body of evidence asserts that corporations, institutions and teams can do well by doing good. Many have already proven that they can differentiate their brands and reputations, as well as their products and servces if they take responsibility for the well-being of their people and the people around them. Below are some of the groups I had the privilege of working with this past month. Peace,

On The Road with Joe: Socially Responsible Coaches and Programs |
A Socially Responsible Company: Verizon
Joe Ehrmann Keynote Speaker at 4th Annual Verizon Foundation National Domestic Violence Prevention Summit
"Joe's message was outstanding! One senior leader said 'I'd like to share that message with all of my employees.' It was truly inspirational to see how a former NFL football player is now a star player in the fight to end domestic violence." Lupita Reyes, Director-National Programs, Verizon Foundation.
In September, Verizon Foundation brought together some the leading organizations in America to Irving, Texas around the theme Engaging Communities to Help End Domestic Violence. Since 2000, the Verizon Foundation has invested more than $450 million in the United States and around the world on behalf of others. One of their key social issues is Domestic Violence Prevention. Domestic violence is a silent epidemic affecting the entire spectrum of society at all educational and socioeconomic levels. One in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. It is the single greatest cause of injury to women ages 15 to 44 in the U.S.- more than muggings, car accidents and rapes combined-and the health-related costs of intimate partner violence exceed $5.8 billion each year. Over a decade ago, Verizon realized the power of a cell phone: it can provide immediate assistance to a domestic violence victim or survivor. They launched the HOPELINE Program, which not only provides cell phones with service to DV victims but also awards cash grants to domestic violence organizations.
A Socially Responsible Church: Highlands Church of Scottsdale, Arizona
Moses, Masculinity and Removing the Masks of False Masculinity- Joe Ehrmann
"Joe's strength is in his passion, his transparency and the fact that he touches many nerves that men try to hide. New to the faith, I was greatly impacted about the way I was raised and how I am raising my kids."
"My only regret about our night with Joe was that I wasn't more pro-active in inviting guys I know to join me-they would have loved it!"
Joe used the story of Moses' rebuilding and reframing broken masculinity to help launch Highlands Church of Scottsdale's 12 week series entitled: Masquerade - The Quest for Identity: Removing the Masks to Unveil the Truth. The goal of the series is to help men remove the masks of false identity; to discover how God truly sees us and to experience the impact that our true identity has on the specific roles of a man's life. It was a wonderful evening addressing the felt needs of men everywhere. Said one attendee, "What a message! It spoke to my heart in a way I wasn't anticipating." If your church is looking for a speaker, workshops or retreats, call Coach for America now as we begin filling in the 2010 - 2011 calendar.

"Joe's presentation was inspiring, educational and eye opening for our entire Villanova University Athletic Department. Our basketball staff has been discussing Joe's concepts and ideas since he left. Joe Ehrmann is a Man who is all about helping other men and women excel at their passion! He is inspirational to me." Jay Wright, Head Basketball Coach, Villanova University
