Each year, approximately 20 business week programs serve more than 20,000 students around the world. Even as winter sets in, business week administrators across the country have begun planning for summer 2008.

Non-profit executives representing 10 states met in Columbus October 3-5 for the annual International Business Week (IBW) conference, hosted by the Ohio Business Week Foundation.

During the conference, state representatives provided progress reports on programming, recruitment and development; shared new activities; and participated in several workshops.

Cathy Ashmore, executive director of the Consortium for Entrepreneurship, showed executives how to encourage schools in their state to incorporate entrepreneurship education into their curriculum.

Lori Hunter-Overmyer, CFRE, senior consultant for Goettler Associates, explained the key elements of successful fundraising in the competitive non-profit arena.

Everyone left the conference with renewed enthusiasm, equipped with fresh ideas to implement next summer.

South Dakota will host the 2008 conference .

I attended Ohio Business Week during the summer of 2005. At that point, I was entering my sophomore year in high school and was not entirely sure of my career interests. Leaving the program, I realized that I had gained a solid understanding of all aspects of business and something just clicked - I loved what I had learned!

I am now a senior at Columbus Alternative High School. Last year, I decided to open my own business. I designed and posted fliers around my community to advertise a dog-sitting business. My experience at OBW gave me the self-confidence and management skills to pursue this business opportunity.

My internship with the Ohio Business Week Foundation will help me as I pursue my education. I plan to study Business and Marketing when I go on to college, and the experiences I take away from this internship will help me reach my goal.

I am excited to learn more from my internship with the Ohio Business Week Foundation. From my own personal testimony, I can say that one week with OBW can lead to a lifetime of new discoveries, opportunities, and interests.

Everyday, more than 2,300 people in the United States become entrepreneurs. In 2005, Ohio ranked below the national average for entrepreneurial activity according to the Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurial Activity. To be competitive in our global marketplace, future business and community leaders need to think, plan and act with an entrepreneurial mindset. To enhance Ohio's economy, we need to recognize that tomorrow's entrepreneurs are in school today.

On September 20, 2007, a meeting comprised of educators, business people, non-profit representatives and government officials met in Westerville to discuss how Ohio we can ignite the spirit of entrepreneurship in Ohio. We developed a list of goals and objectives to reach education, business, community and government sectors at all levels. And the Ohio Entrepreneurship Coalition was born.

The Ohio Entrepreneurship Coalition's mission is to recognize the value of entrepreneurs in Ohio's economy and to encourage the growth of entrepreneurial education as a lifelong learning process, starting with today's youth.

Join the Ohio Entrepreneurship Coalition and other Ohio organizations as we celebrate the second annual National Entrepreneurship Week February 23 - March 1, 2008. As part of the National Entrepreneurship Week, you will join leaders from around the state to formulate a plan to promote entrepreneurship education in Ohio.

The mission of this plan will be to: Encourage the implementation of entrepreneurship education in Ohio; Recognize the contributions of Ohio's entrepreneurs; Support an entrepreneurial culture in Ohio; Establish a network of organizations who want to see entrepreneurship flourish in Ohio; and Promote events, activities, and announcements that coincide with National Entrepreneurship Week 2008.

To get involved in the Ohio Entrepreneurship Coalition, please contact Ohio Business Week Foundation Executive Director Nancy Whetstone at (614) 488-6327 or nancywhetstone@ohiobusinessweek.org.
