Smart marketing pays dividends --but only if you invest wisely by Ron Jette

Marketing shouldn't be based on a roll of the dice.

My plan--like yours, I'm sure--is to invest now to make sure I can live comfortably as I grow older. Since I don't want to gamble with my future, I try to base my investments on sound information so I can make smart decisions. So what does that have to do with marketing? Everything! Like smart retirement planning, smart marketing pays--and the process and expectations should be exactly the same. Here's what a good approach to investing looks like:
- You look at a range of options you think would be appropriate for you, discarding those that are outside your comfort zone, too expensive or don't promise a sufficient rate of return.
- You do the research to make sure you have the data you need to make informed decisions.
- You put your money into the investments you think are right for you, ones that promise a good rate of return.
- You measure each investment's rate of return.
- You adjust each investment depending on how well it performs.

Buying $100 worth of lottery tickets isn't an investment. Neither is spending $1,000 on a print ad unless you can be confident that it is going to deliver the right message to the right market and generate a good return. If you want your marketing dollars to have more impact, invest wisely, keep a close eye on your rate of return and adjust accordingly.
