Great thought
"The purpose of writing is to inflate weak ideas, obscure pure reasoning, and inhibit clarity. With a little practice, writing can be an intimidating and impenetrable fog!"

Bill Watterson,
American cartoonist
(Calvin and Hobbes)

He's kidding, of course. But given some writing we see, some people may actually believe this!

Customer service isn't a
department, it's an attitude

by Ron Jette

ServiceWhen people ask me what I do, I usually respond by saying that I help people sell more of whatever it is they are selling. Whether they are selling legal services,
participation in a government program, gourmet food, association memberships or support for a charitable cause, my job is to help them achieve success by helping them sell more of it to more people.

But the operative word in my response isn't "sell." It's "help." We help them sell more products, services or programs. In fact, we help our clients a lot of things. Selling is just the end result.

For example, we help them get on with their day by making the process as simple as possible. We help them understand what they are really selling so they can sell more of it. We help them identify their markets. We help they clarify their messages so people can more easily see the benefit of purchasing from them.

Now, let's switch gears for a second. How important is customer service in your organization? And what is it you are doing when you are providing good customer service? You are helping people.

The connection is clear: if you want to sell more, help more. Don't go in thinking about how you can sell to this person. Instead, go in thinking about how you can help this person.

That's
where you'll find success.

QuikTips

Shorter, tighter, simpler -- Never, ever, ever send out the first draft of your writing. There is always room for improvement. Is it clear enough? Does it flow well enough? Is it logical enough? Is it succinct enough? Then, just when you think it's as good as it will get, read it again. And make more changes, if necessary. Your readers will thank you for it.
