Give 'em what they want

I recently re-read McGovern's book. The sticker on the back tells me I paid $44.95 for more than 200 pages of great advice on how to write, well, killer content. I would have paid that for page 67 alone. That's where you'll find the quote.

 

Oh, sure, he tells you other things we know are critical to your website's success:

 

  • less is more (people are in a hurry);
  • content is not king (unless it is great content);
  • hire an editor (he says it's among the best investments you'll make); and
  • lead with the need (tell them what's in it for them now).

 

But by far, the very best advice you'll get out of Writing Killer Content is this: The people whose attention you need the most are task-driven and time-starved. Keep it simple and focus relentlessly on the task they are trying to complete. Don't bog them down in stuff that's irrelevant. Otherwise, you'll quickly become irrelevant and they will drop you faster than a hot potato.

 

What is it people come looking for when they visit your site? Is it easy to find? Can they find it no matter where on the site they land? Or, do you bore them to tears with how long you've been in business and how many employees you have?

 

Make task-completion fast and easy and you will quickly move your visitors to buy--or buy into--whatever it is you are selling.
