AJ Banner December 2010
An open letter
Dear Santa,

We have to admit, we've had a pretty good year and there isn't much we need. But can we ask a favour? When you swing by Ottawa, could you drop a few extra good tidings at the area food banks?

They're having a tough time this year making sure everyone has food on the table this holiday season. In fact, winter, in general, is hard for them. If you could do that, we'd really appreciate it.

In the meantime, have yourself a great Christmas and a safe, happy and prosperous New Year!

Being different is just the start

Rolls Royce
Classic or current, many believe Rolls Royce owns its category. Do you own yours?
When we sat through Marketing 101, oh, so many years ago, we were taught that differentiators--those things that set us apart from the competition--are important. And they are. But in a marketplace with hundreds of thousands of categories and an exponential number of people willing to sell to us, being different may not be enough.

American retailer Neiman Marcus is so renowned south of the border for its customer-service stories that, if you believe the hype, it's is in a category of its own.

Category of its own. Now that's an interesting concept.

What if you were so different, so unique, that you were in a category of your own? At Adams Jette, we think that's what everybody who's selling anything should strive for. Be so good at what you do, be so different, that people say, "nobody else does what they do." That's being in a category of your own.

And when you own your own category, there simply is no competition.

Since its founding in 1857, the Chamber (formerly the Ottawa Board of Trade) has been committed to not only its members' growth and prosperity, but to the well-being of the community at large.

According to one member, "I joined the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce because I want to have access to their high-quality networking events, to have a credible voice in business advocacy, and to have timely information about developments and issues that affect not only my business but the economic climate in Ottawa as a whole."

HRSDC

"We can always count on their team to provide quality editing on time--whether it is an urgent ministerial message, an MP kit or a press release with a quick turnaround time; a large public report that needs plain language to reach its audience; or a regular edit of our many public documents--they always understand our requirements, work within our guidelines and deliver texts that could have been done by our own editors. We turn to them whenever we need extra help!"

QuikTips

Enough about you, let's talk about me! -- Back in the good old days, most of us were taught we should avoid using "I" when referring to ourselves in writing. Instead, we should use "the author."

While not wrong, "the author" is, as the Chicago Manual of Style puts it, "formal, if not old-fashioned." Relax! If you feel this antiquated approach is too stiff for your prose, the author of this tip recommends you avoid it.
