There are a lot of fears in running your own business and one is the 'I have to do this alone' fear
When our son, Chris, was 3 and Emily was one we had Abby. Abby was a beautiful baby but there was one problem. She never slept more than 2 hours at a time. Since I was nursing Abby this meant I never slept more than 2 hours at a time. After a few months of this and taking care of a 3 year old and a one year old I was a walking zombie.
Finally, when Abby was 7 1/2 months old I took her into the doctor because I could not figure out what was wrong. She never seemed sick; she just would cry when I would lay her down. It turns out this poor child had double infections. I felt like the worse mom ever. I should have known this. But, in my defense how could I have known? I've never had an ear infection, Chris and Emily never head - but still, I really beat myself up. I thought that as a mom I should know everything.
I was standing alone - I was not standing out.
When you stand alone you think you know everything. When you stand out you ask for help. You realize that no one person on this earth knows everything.
The underlying fear with "I have to do it alone' is that we feel we should know everything and we'd look like a fool if we asked someone a question. Sound ridiculous? It's true.
I've faced this fear, too, until one day years ago when I had started my business I had a meeting with myself and said "Elizabeth, how could you possibly know everything? This is your first time owning a home-based business, you are the only organizing expert and speaker on this topic in this area, and you have just started learning to do this, and there are people out there who have been doing this much longer than you. Stop thinking that you know everything, you don't, and that is ok." I gave myself permission not to have to know everything.
None of us are alone. All of us are in an industry where others have blazed the trail and they can help us shorten the learning curve by years.
What questions do you have? What do you want to know? Find someone who is where you would like to be and ask questions. They'd love to help!
Elizabeth's Assignment:
- Make a decision that you are not going to stand alone anymore.
- Take action and decide where you need help in your business. Look around you in your industry and find someone who is where you want to be in your business. Call them up and see if they'd be your coach.
- Stay focused by being aware of when you are 'standing alone' and start reaching out!
Now is your time,
Let me know at my blog who you are going to call!
