February Grocery Bag Walla Walla's Gourmet Grocery
February 2009

January has come and gone and unfortunately along with it some dear friends and fellow businesses here in Walla Walla. We need to mark the passing of two special locally owned businesses that garnered much acclaim, 26brix and Luscious by Nature.

26brix will sorely be missed by locals and out of town guests. 26brix provided many wonderful and memorable meals for us and friends over the past four years. Mike and Krista Davis, along with the rest of the wonderful staff, always made going out to dinner in Walla Walla an experience. They will be genuinely missed by many.

Luscious by Nature, who transformed an old gas station at Colville and Alder into a new Walla Walla landmark and favorite hot spot for locals, out of towners and food writers, will also be sorely missed. Owners Daymon Bruck and Ceil Blaine did a remarkable job transforming what was a run down building into a shining jewel in the crown of Walla Walla.

Luscious and 26 Brix both garnered much regional and national press and Walla Walla will be worse for losing them. Walla Walla is, like many cities and towns across this nation, at a crossroads. We have two paths that lie before us: the path of chain restaurants, behemoth corporations and mediocrity or the path of locally owned, sustainably managed, high quality businesses that add to our reputation as a wine and food destination. It is up to all of us to choose which path is best for our community, short term and long term.

Everyday we must make choices and for those of you who continue to choose Salumiere Cesario, we thank you. It is important that we get the word out to the rest of those in our community or we will continue to loose more locally owned businesses. If you have a friend or neighbor that has never been to any of your favorite locally owned shops or restaurants, take them out for a day and show them what they are missing and what you love about your community. Because without our community we are just another town. . .

Come check out what's in the bag!

    Wine
    Heart Wine

We continue to scour the state in search of great wines at great prices. Although the winter has hampered our ability to keep our racks full, we continue to bring in new wines on a regular basis. Check our store frequently to see what is new. We have a great selection of reasonably priced sparkling wines for your Valentine's Day celebration.

Riondo Prosecco Blanc ($15) with a touch of sweetness to keep it light on the palate this is the perfect starter for you and your sweetheart.

Riondo Prosecco Rose ($15) just like its sibling but with a touch of pink.

We have many other wonderful wines to choose from. Come in and let us help you pick out the perfect wine for your Valentine. Cheers.

    Cheese
    Fondue

Winter is a great time to reacquaint your self with how wonderful cheese can be. From fondue to warm cheese sandwiches to a cheese course at dessert, cheese is what you have been missing.

We have a very good selection of winter cheeses right now including Cheddar from the Isle of Mull, Cave Aged Gruyere, Cave Aged Emmenthaler and Midnight Moon, just to name a few. We also have a few soft cheeses to remind you of the warmer days to come.

And all are stored and aged in the only climate controlled, walk in cheese closet in the Pacific Northwest. Come in and taste why Salumiere Cesario is THE place to buy cheese in Walla Walla.

    Local Businesses Need Your Support
    shop local

With the closing of five local restaurants in one week here in Walla Walla, it is painfully apparent that local businesses cannot survive without local support.

We understand that times are tough all around and that things will probably get worse before they get better. But, whenever possible, we would like to encourage you to support your local businesses. When you go out to eat, whenever possible, choose a local restaurant rather than a chain. The difference will be quality rather than quantity. Whenever possible, shop at a locally owned small business rather than at a big box store. The difference may only be a dollar, but it is a dollar spent with a neighbor and a member of our community.

Every dollar we spend in a local business is a dollar that strengthens our community and ensures that our neighbors will be here another day to serve the needs of our community. We appreciate all of you who have supported us over the last two years and we thank you. Without our customers we would not be here. We want to be here for many years to come so help us get the word out! If you know someone who has never been in the store, bring them down and show them why you shop here and maybe they will become a "regular" just like you.

    Cheers!

Did you know that Salumiere Cesario has fresh produce?

We have always thought it important to provide our community with hard to find high quality foods, including produce. We are regularly stocking Meyer lemons, oro blanco grapefruit (sweet white), arugula and we also have fresh lemon grass. We usually keep some kefir lime leaves in the freezer for those who want to try their hand at making Asian cuisine. If there is something special that you have been looking for, come in, we just might have it. And if we don't stock it, we can usually get it within a few days - all you need to do is ask.
