December Grocery Bag Walla Walla's Gourmet Grocery
December 2008

It is hard to believe that 2008 is almost behind us. It has been a wild year both around the world and here at Salumiere Cesario. We are looking forward to the lively holiday season here in Walla Walla, with the barrel tasting weekend beginning today followed by all of the lovely holidays that December brings us each year.

But, besides that, we have some fun things "in store" for you this month. Come check out what's in the bag!

What's In The Bag:
  • Did you know?
  • Wine
  • Culture
  • Country Hams are Here!
  • Beer
  • Produce
  • Holiday Gifts
  • Local Fundraiser!
  • Cheers!

  • Wine
    bubbly

We seem to be having a hard time keeping the Bubbles in stock, you guys can't get enough! The good news is we are brining in more to satiate your appetite for good sparkling wines. We typically have sparklers for all budgets and whatever your preference may be; Prosecco, Champagne, Sparking Wine, Cava and Cremant. We also have a stash of bottles chilling in our refrigerated case for that last minute urge to celebrate. Salumiere Cesario is a must visit before your holiday parties!

    Culture
    culture

We recently became the first store in Walla Walla, and maybe even the first in eastern Washington, to carry the cheese centric magazine Culture. Culture is the word on cheese and the only consumer magazine devoted to cheese. This quarterly magazine is filled with informative articles about cheese, the people who make it and what you need to know when buying it. If you love cheese even half as much as we do, then you need to come in and pick up your own copy. We think it is wonderful and hope you will too.

    Country Hams are Here!
    Newsoms Ham

Many of you became familiar with the Newsom's Country Ham last year. We have five hams this year that have been set aside for us. We will be slicing them in the store throughout the Holiday Season. If you are expecting a big crowd this year, a whole country ham would be a great item to have around for folks to snack on. Get your hands on yours before they are all gone!

    Beer
    The Abyss

On the beer front we have great news. Many of you want to try new beers, but there seems to be a fear of a new beer in a big bottle. Well our solution is simple, get a friend or two and come down to the store and sample a beer. Now that we have our on-premise license, you can sit and sip with a few friends right here in our shop, and even have some tasty eats with your beer.

Currently we have two new ciders from Eric Bordelet in France. "Cydre Doux" which is made in a gently off-dry style, with racy acidity giving the wine an almost dry impression that works marvelously as an aperitif or at the table. "Poiré Authentique", which is done in a traditionally off- dry, sparkling style that works brilliantly with goat cheese.

Like great wine, great cider is a reflection of the underlying terroir of the orchards, the quality and the variety of the fruit trees planted, the yields in the orchard and of course, the age of the trees. The same deep, intricate root systems that deliver unmatched complexity in wines produced from old vines are at play in the orchard as well, with older trees producing better fruit to work with than younger trees.

We also have just received ONE CASE of The Abyss from Deschutes Brewing. This exceptionally popular imperial stout, aged in French oak and bourbon barrels, has immense depth with its rich and complex flavors. True to its name, subtle notes of coffee, chocolate, molasses and licorice pull you in deeper and deeper. This is a not to miss and extremely limited offering, once gone we may not be able to get more until next year.

    Produce
    oro blano

Fig season is over. But citrus season is just starting up. For those of you who missed the first batch of Meyer lemons, more are on the way as well as seville oranges and oro blanco grapefruit. If you have never used fresh squeezed citrus now is your chance. On salads, in cocktails, even in your water! Fresh citrus is good for you.

As well as fresh fruits, we will also be selling fresh squeezed citrus juice during the winter and spring. Fresh juice can be frozen and used throughout the rest of the year. We will also be making some tasty menu items with our fresh produce throughout the winter months. Stop in for a frisee salad when you need that reminder that warmer weather is on the way.

    Holiday Gifts
    true basket

As we mentioned in our last newsletter, we have gifts galore for that wine lover or foodie on your list! Our picnic sets have been very popular - we have a few sizes in a few price ranges, and filled with some gourmet goodies from our store they make a great gift!

We also have a beautiful selection of wine totes and gift bags - unique designs for just about any occasion.

Don't forget about our custom gift-baskets either! Come in a choose a basket, fill it up with a bunch of goodies from the store, and we can have a beautifully wrapped custom gift basket ready for you the very next day.

And, from bottle thermometers to wine openers, fondue sets and hand-made holiday cards, you'll need to keep us on your list of places to shop this holiday season - we have more than just food in our store!

    Local Fundraiser!
    tree

Salumiere Cesario is happy to announce its participation in the Junior Club of Walla Walla's 1st annual Festival of Mini-Trees. The mini-trees will be on display in the lobby of the Marcus Whitman Hotel from December 7th - 13th. Visitors will be able to bid on their favorite trees in a blind-box auction setting or provide a donation. All money raised will be donated to the Junior Club core projects and scholarships.

Approximately 30 trees will be on display. The trees have been decorated by local artists, decorators, and merchants like ourselves, as well as Brights, Inland Octopus, Studio Opal, and Walla Walla Clothing to name a few.

Junior Club of Walla Walla serves the needs of several local non-profit organizations such as the Blue Mountain Humane Society, YWCA of Walla Walla, Blue Mountain Chapter Red Cross, Walla Walla Community Hospice, and the Herring House, as well as scholarship funds for deserving local women.

Please help us in supporting this great cause by viewing the mini-trees next week!

    Cheers!

    Did you know?

We have found that many of you often miss some of the unique and unusual items that we frequently have in store. So, we will periodically bring you the DID YOU KNOW section to highlight some of these items.

DID YOU KNOW : That we now serve wine, beer and sake by the glass and the bottle? Our on-premise liquor license was approved mid November and we are now serving these lovely beverages by the glass right in our store! Selection changes frequently and we usually try to pair our by-the-glass drinks with the tasty treats we are serving in store that day.

Come take a break from the busy holiday shopping and enjoy some holiday cheer!
    Cheers!
