Welcome to our eigth issue of 2009.  We open this issue with news of the Governments intentions relating to Maternity and Paternity Leave.  We have a reminder about the imminent changes to the National Minimum Wage and Redundancy Payment and finish off with more guidance about holidays and sick leave.
 
At the foot of this newsletter you will find details about our Autumn Employment Law Update Seminar.  These events are always popular and you are encouraged to book your place early to avoid dissapointment.

 

Legislation Update 
Fathers to Share 'Maternity Leave'
The Government has announced that they will consult shortly on new regulations that will allow mothers to transfer some of their maternity entitlement to the father. Mothers will be able to choose to transfer the last six months of their maternity leave to the father with up to three months paid at the same rate as Statutory Maternity Pay. The Government intends that the new law will be in force by April 2010 and have effect for parents of children due on or after 3 April 2011.

Employers are being reminded that 1 October sees increases in the hourly rates for the national minimum wage.

Employees who are Sick on Holiday can Reallocate their Leave
A ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has given employees the right to ask to claim back periods of leave which have been affected by illness.
