What's New
What's Happening in Yellowstone Country
One of if not the biggest events in Montana takes place this weekend in Bozeman. It's the 111th Bobcat-Griz football game. If your one of the lucky one's that already has tickets hold on to them, it's rumored that these tickets are going for between $249-$368 (WOW that's a lot of flies) The Bobcats won this game last year in a barn burner and this years game should just as exciting. All week there has been a huge buzz within the state and folks are fired up. Many of our guides attended both MSU & U of M and throughout the fishing season they are ribbing one another about which is the better team, many of you have probably heard them, it's hard not to. For me, well, all I can say is GO BOBCATS!!!!!!!!!!!
Our 2012 catalogue is at the printers and we look forward to it being in the mail to you in early January. Our winter and spring fly orders are in to our talented fly tiers and we are working on hides and feathers. Next week you will see here the world premier of BRF's new "Christmas on the Web". We hope you enjoy it and you'll let us help you with your holiday purchases, and wish list! Make sure you check this out weekly, if not daily as it will change as we get closer to the big day.
As usual in the rest of this issue, you'll find fishing news from Yellowstone Country in the weekly Fishing Report. You can see what's hot off the vise in the Fly of the Week, get a sneak peek at some of the best materials on our tying bench in the Fly Tying Material of the Week, and stay up to date with the guide staff and their trips in the Guide Trip of the Week.
You'll be seeing a new email newsletter most every week throughout the fall and winter to keep you tuned in to all things fly fishing and fly tying in the greater Yellowstone area and beyond. Throughout the seasons, we'll keep sending you news of hatches and fishing holes around West Yellowstone. So without further delay, go ahead and jump right into the newsletter. And as always, don't hesitate to give us a call or shoot us an email if you have any questions, or if you just want a little fish talk.

Fishing Report
Weekly Conditions and Tips
17 November 2011 Blue Ribbon Flies Fishing Report Craig Mathews
My good friend Tim Bozorth and I met at the West Fork Bridge yesterday. We decided that an 11am meet time would give us plenty of time to walk to our favorite midge runs, rig up and have lunch before a trout would begin rising to an expected midge emergence around noon. When we drove up to park the fish were rising like wolves to midges. We fumbled putting on our waders, neither of us could tie a knot, I forgot my sunglasses and had to walk back for them, Tim's net dragged along behind in the snow and hooked up on snags a few times but we finally got our acts together and arrived at the first pool. Fish rose in number in front and behind the rocks and logs. There must have been 40-50 fish working emerging midges. Heads and tails popped out of the water everywhere and, of course at first, we sprayed casts and flock shot. Still, we both managed a couple fish before we finally settled down and began singling out big, individual risers. We couldn't get over just how close we could get to rising fish by wading carefully, not sending a wading wave which would put them down. Tim sat on a rock and I sat on the frozen shoreline and we both took several 14-16" rainbows and browns before the action shut down at 1pm. We reeled in and had lunch and talked about flies and fishing and the upcoming winter which is forecasted to be a long-cold-windy-snowy one. Chomping on cold sandwiches and keeping an eye on the water it wasn't long before we both noticed several fish rising again. We each took a couple more nice rainbows before the wind came up and temps dropped a few degrees and we headed home. The day was perfect for midge activity; 27 degrees, calm and overcast. We both used Zelon Midges on 5x and had no refusals! Hopefully this is just the beginning of a long Yellowstone winter filled with many midge days on our rivers. Stay with us here for our reports throughout the winter.
The Madison River north of town and near Highway 191 is fishing well for those willing to brave the cold. Swing big fall soft hackles or fish streamers on a tight line and you can be sure of taking some very nice run up browns and rainbows. The river between the lakes has been great fishing nymph and egg patterns and you might see midging fish at the mouth where you will need to present a #20 Zelon or Skittering Midge to risers. The river near Raynolds Bridge has fished well with Krystal and original $3 Dips as well as Zelon Midges when the fish are coming up. Around $3 Bridge and all the way to Lyon Bridge the dry fly action is strong when conditions are perfect; calm, overcast with temps in the high 20's to low 40's.
The Gallatin Riverhas fished well near Big Sky, Snowflake Springs and the Golden Gate. Midges are on now and the nymphing is outstanding when the fish are not coming up
Now we are off to meet some midge activity.
