Greetings!
Welcome back to Blue Ribbon Flies. This week's issue of the email newsletter brings news of Yellowstone country fishing, tying, and a few other interesting items, plus photos that will make your mouth water. We're glad you're here.
We've got a lot to show you and tell you about this week, so grab a cup of coffee, settle down in a comfy chair, and dig in. Heck, if you don't have time to read all about it right now, save it in your special folder for a quiet moment.
We hope to see you soon, right here in West Yellowstone, but until then we wish you happy and healthy fishing and fly tying. All our best to each of you. Thanks for tuning in!

What's New
What's Happening in Yellowstone Country
Due out in June 2012, this new anthology features essays by Craig, Nick Lyons, Michael Keaton, and more. This is not the final copy, but it should wet your whistle.
Welcome back to Blue Ribbon. Happy almost-Halloween, almost-Daylight Saving Time, and almost-Park closing. With two weeks and change until the official end of the season, we are thrilled to report good fishing, decent weather, and great friends still hanging around.
We have two exciting writing features to talk about this week. One is Astream, an upcoming book akin to Afield, due out in June of next year. Our friend Bob DeMott has been hard at work collecting and editing essays by all sorts of interesting folks about the joys and beauties of spending time on the water. If you loved Afield, or even if you haven't discovered that treasure yet, you will want to reserve a copy of Astream. We'll have more information for you in the new year about just how to go about doing that.
The second writing opportunity is for YOU. Yes, it's catalog time again, and we're hard at work on our 2012 issue. We've realized however it will not be complete without an article, essay or some sort of submission from you. Sometimes we worry that you've heard all we have to say - we need a fresh perspective and a breath of fresh air. That's why we're inviting you to enter our 2012 Catalog Contest.
That's right. We want your best article, essay, fly pattern, photograph, or whatever you have to offer. We wouldn't do what we do without you, and we want to include you in our 2012 catalog. Here's the catch: our deadline is November 1. That gives you exactly 11 days to polish up your best bit of writing, recipe for your very special fly, or photograph, and get it to us.
Email your submission to us at brf@blueribbonflies.com. We will let you know if you will be included in the catalog by November 15th or so. We hope you'll take a little time to make this happen. It will be a better catalog for your effort, and you will be a better writer, photographer, or fly designer for the time you spend. Help us make the 2012 catalog our best ever. We can't wait to hear from you!
As usual in the rest of this issue, you'll find fishing news from Yellowstone Country in the weekly Fishing Report. You can see what's hot off the vise in the Fly of the Week, get a sneak peek at some of the best materials on our tying bench in the Fly Tying Material of the Week, and stay up to date with the guide staff and their trips in the Guide Trip of the Week.
You'll be seeing a new email newsletter most every week throughout the spring and summer to keep you tuned in to all things fly fishing and fly tying in the greater Yellowstone area and beyond. Throughout the seasons, we'll keep sending you news of hatches and fishing holes around West Yellowstone. So without further delay, go ahead and jump right into the newsletter. And as always, don't hesitate to give us a call or shoot us an email if you have any questions, or if you just want a little fish talk.

Fishing Report
Weekly Conditions and Tips
By Cam Coffin 20 October 2011
Nobuya Kasai sent us some great photos of his recent trip. Thank you!
This week finds Craig and Jackie enjoying some time away from the shop fishing with friends. Cam stepped up with a report on our local fishing. Here's what's happening around our neck of the woods.
Firehole River: We have experienced some good dry fly fishing on the Firehole over the last week, still seeing caddis and Baetis. The hatches seem to be from noon to about 4pm. Don't be afraid to swing some soft hackles to these rising fish.
Gibbon River: Yes, there are fish that have made it all the way to the Gibbon. This is a nice option for those of you who want to get away from the standard norm.
Madison in the Park: With each passing day we are seeing more and more fish up into the system. We are anticipating that with a little weather this weekend these fish will be on the bite. Swinging larger soft hackles like the Bakers Hole soft hackle, Lucky Bucky's and streamers have produced some nice fish during the morning and late afternoons. There has been some good nymph fishing during the midday with rubber legs, RS2's, Red Copper Johns, San Jaun's and Copper Zonkers. On cloudy days we have had a few nice fish looking up to Baetis. Look for this stretch of water to get extremely active in the next week.
Madison Between the Lakes: The nymphing has been extremely good in this section with many good browns being caught. Red Copper Johns, rubber legs, and #18 red serendipities have been the staples. There have been a few fish rising in this section but for the most part nymphing and streamers. As far as streamers are concerned Copper Zonkers, black Super Buggers, and M's Sculpins will do the trick.
Madison below Quake: Nymphing has been good with small midges and PT's. Also the Baetis have been coming off from mid day to 4pm. If it clouds up get down there! There has not been a lot of foot traffic in this section and you'll have some solitude.
Henry's Lake: We have still been getting great reports from Henry's. Once you find these fish it's "Game On." Mini leeches and Halebobs have been very productive.
If you're coming our way give a call. We're here from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week until the Park closes! We'll see you soon.
Stay up to date with our Fishing Report and other news...

Fly of the Week
Hot off the Vise!!
How About the $3 Serendipity?
There's A Reason It's A Classic
You know the sensation you have when you finally get around to reading Uncle Tom's Cabin or David Copperfield? No, not boredom or bad flashbacks from high school. No, we're talking about the admiration and enjoyment, the dawning understanding of "Oooooohhhhhh, so THAT's why this is considered a classic...".
Fishing with a $3 Dip has the same amazing dawn of understanding. "So THAT's why Blue Ribbon loves this fly," is what you'll find yourself thinking as you haul in fish after fish with this skinny, unlikely-looking nymph.
The $3 Serendipity is such a classic we've recreated it in olive, red and crystal, with beads and without. No other nymph has caused as much excitement in the fishing community here in Yellowstone Country as the $3 Bridge Serendipity. Casually called the $3 Dip, these simple little nymphs have found their way into the fly box of every guide and just about every customer.
Give them a try for yourself. You'll finally get it - why it's a classic and why it's so well-loved. You'll be offering $3 Dips to every friend and fisherman you meet, discussing their merit and coming back to them like the classics they are. See for yourself.
For $3 Serendipities and other great patterns...
