Hope you're enjoying the new year, doing some fishing, tying up some flies, and starting to think about your 2011 trip to Yellowstone country. Take a break from work or play, grab a cup of coffee, and pretend you're leaning on the counter here at Blue Ribbon Flies. We wish you were here, but until you are we'll keep you in the loop. Thanks for stopping by.

 What's New
 What's Happening in Yellowstone Country

john While winter hangs on in and around West Yellowstone the lower river valleys are moving nicely into spring. Our summer birds are all back in places like the Madison and Yellowstone Valleys, elk are heading up-valley with the cows heavy with next month's calves now showing, and WCS wolverine study crews having a hard go of it with sagging snow ground cover and having to cross country ski or snowshoe to check the DNA hair snares and stealth cameras, (more on this great study soon). Too, Baetis and midges are emerging on rivers like the Yellowstone, Madison, Henry's Fork, Missouri and Big Horn and the fish are rising to them. We are all very excited at the shop to be fishing dry flies on so many rivers to so many rising trout!

BRF is excited to announce that our own John Juracek is having a photo show this week at the Ecce Gallery in the Emerson Cultural Center Building in Bozeman. The show runs April 8-May 11 when they will display John's winter work. There's an opening reception on Friday, April 8th from 5-8p.m. when John will be there so head down to Bozeman and check out John's awesome photos!

As usual in the rest of this newsletter, you'll find fishing news from Yellowstone Country in the weekly Fishing Report. You can see what's hot off the vise in the Fly of the Week, get a sneak peek at some of the best materials on our tying bench in the Fly Tying Material of the Week, and stay up to date with the guide staff and their trips in the Guide Trip of the Week.

You'll be seeing a new email newsletter most every week throughout the winter to keep you tuned in to all things fly fishing and fly tying in the greater Yellowstone area and beyond. Throughout the seasons, we'll keep sending you news of hatches and fishing holes around West Yellowstone. So without further delay, go ahead and jump right into the newsletter. And as always, don't hesitate to give us a call or shoot us an email if you have any questions, or if you just want a little fish talk.

Can't Make it to Bozeman to see John's Photo's? Check some of them out right here!

 Fishing Report
 Weekly Conditions and Tips

By Craig Mathews I'm going fishing. In my plans are the Madison, Yellowstone and Gallatin this coming week.

The Madison has been great. The river below Bear Trap Canyon has fished strong with nymphs this past week. Micro Madison Midge and Mayfly Nymphs have been the ticket for success. Trout, mostly `12-15", can be expected on these nymphs. A few larger trout are coming to our Kora's Crayfish pattern fished dead drift. Midges and Baetis are on now too, but windy conditions have hampered trout rising to them during their time on the water. When calm, especially on overcast days, the fish will come up all the way from McAtte Bridge downstream to Three Forks, Mt during midge and Baetis times. All you need for dries are Baetis Sparkle Duns and Zelon Midges but a Stimulator will rise some good fish too.

The Yellowstone has fished very well. I like the water near Livingston but friends have fished it all the way to Big Timber with great success. Look for Baetis and midges as well as Skwala Stones to bring the fish up. Have the same flies as above along with a #20 G Gnat Emerger and Skittering Midge. Streamer fishing has been good too, not many trout will come to the streamers but those that do make things well worth your time fishing one like a woolhead sculpin or Chech Special.

The Gallatin has been fun. We have had our best action down below Big Sky lately but the river should be good all the way up to the park line now. This river will fish strong with nymphs like our GM and red Rick's Blood Midge but on overcast days you will want to be ready to fish Baetis and midges with the same flies as above.

 Fly of the Week
 Hot off the Vise!!

imp baetis Improved Baetis Sparkle Dun

Yes they are here! We have seen several Baetis on many different rivers this week. The Lower Boulder had a very good emergence just two days ago and we have had other reports on the Gallatin and Yellowstone.

So just to make sure that everyone is ready we have again made a video on how to tie the Improved Baetis Sparkle Dun. This fly is a great imitation, it floats well and has a very sparse body which is very popular with our guides.

This a very easy fly to tie, just watch the video and you can see for yourself.

Fly Tying Material of the Week
 Unique Materials for Effective Patterns

Zelon Dubbing Selections

This week we have been tying lots of Brachycentrus sp. caddis patterns in preparation for the Mothers' Day Caddis activity on the Madison and Yellowstone Rivers. This important caddis species is found all over the fly fishing world from the east coast streams to the far northwestern rivers. Our vises are also turning out loads of Zelon Midges for our own use using Tiger Beetle Zelon Dubbing for their thorax. Bucky and Jackie have loaded up several BRF Zelon Dubbing Selections for the shop and I decided that we should do a zelon dubbing special this week in this newsletter so anyone purchasing the dubbing selection all boxed up for $12.99 gets a free package of white zelon thrown in for free, the white zelon sells for $3.25 so this is a heck of a deal!

Look here for this and many hard to find fly tying materials.

 Tenkara Guide
A simpler world of fly fishing.

Tenkara Tenkara Guide

Our YouTube videos this week include tying our Baetis Improved Sparkle Dun along with Cam explaining how he and our guides rig a 2 fly setup.

Another short video clip introduces the new book, "Tenkara- Radically Simple, Ultralight Fly Fishing", just released by the Lyons Press. This wonderful guide comes from Tenkara experts, Kevin Kelleher and Misako Ishimura. It is THE essential guide to a simpler world of fly fishing which we are embracing. It is the simplicity that's going to win anglers over; Tenkara has everything we all love about fly fishing, but with liberating minimalism! I highly recommend this handy guide as well as the Tenkara method of fishing, one that has been long overlooked here in the west, but is now taking the fly fishing world by storm. We have sold many Tenkara rods this winter, especially after showing us fish them on the Madison and how effective they are to fish. Not only are the fun and simple to use but too, they are a most efficient method of fly fishing. The book is a steal at $21.95, even if you've never fished the Tenkara way!

What does Craig have to say about the Tenkara guide book?

 Guide Trip of the Week
 Nobody does it better!!

2011 Spring road trips have started today!

Our spring Mayfly Tours start this week and all guides will be on rivers like those above as well as the Big Hole, Beaverhead, Boulder and others. It is fun to watch anglers arriving here at the shop loading up on new fly patterns and gear in anticipation of their week long guided trips with our guides. Most are repeat clients having had past Mayfly Tours under their belts, knowing they will be taking advantage of some of the finest dry fly fishing of the year, all hoping for a day or two of inclement weather conditions which can bring on some of the best Baetis emergences known to man! Follow our reports here for weekly updates and photos of their trips.

O"Dell Creek

Speaking of rising trout, those of you interested in fishing Odell or "Spring Creek" immortalized by Nick Lyons in his wonderful book by the same name, had better make your 2011 reservations to fish this incredible stream. This year will be the final year we will be allowed to fish the very private stretch of the Longhorn Ranch of Odell (Spring Creek) due to stream enhancement projects and more to take place here over the following several years. Take a close look at the photos in this report as some are taken on Odell. The best trout I ever took on this stream was a brown taped just over 27" a couple years ago, I have seen them larger on the creek. Avoid disappointment and call today to reserve your rod on the creek. We limit the rods to 4 per day, 3 days a week from June 10th to September when this stretch of the creek will close.

Many of you lately have asked about how our guides rig their rods for nymphing the Madison, so we thought we would have one of them tell you in a short how to video. Just click the link at the bottom of the page to view this.

 Fly Fisher of Japan Magazine.
 Earthquake relief efforts.

Rianovosti On a Final note BRF has become involved with Fly Fisher of Japan Magazine in the relief efforts following the earthquake, tsunamis and nuclear plant accidents there last month. Areas of Japan hit by the disasters comprise the Fukushima, Miyagi and Iwate Perfectures; all beautiful coastal areas that had great trout fishing for yamame (cherry salmon) and iwana (char). BRF has donated a guided day of fishing for 1-2 anglers on Odell Creek, valued at $1500, with the full amount of the sale (auction) of our item going to Japan Red Cross. We have also made donations to relief efforts in Bozeman going to the same program. We have many friends and fellow anglers from this area and we will continue to help the ongoing relief efforts there, stay tuned here.

Hope you enjoy the latest issue. We'll keep 'em coming, keeping you up to date on the best fishing water, tips, and gear we can get our hands on. Let us know how you're fishing, and what you're up to. Keep those pictures and fish stories coming!

Thanks for spending time with us. We'll see you soon!
