What's New
What's Happening in Yellowstone Country
We had a wonderful time at our Anniversary Party last night, and wanted to share it with you. Our email newsletter will be back to the original format next week, but this week we just wanted to give you a taste of our celebration.
If you've been on the edge of your seat, waiting to hear whose name would be drawn for the free guided trip, in the raffle for contributions to the Madison River Foundation and the Yellowstone Park Foundation, we have a winner! The incredible part of this story is the generosity you showed and the valuable work these foundations will do with your contributions. The winner of the drawing is Stan Takami!
If you were there, thank you, and if you couldn't make it, we missed you. Thanks to every single one of you for 30 amazing years. If we could send you a piece of cake, we would. To all of you, thank you for your business, your friendship, your stories, your support, your help, your humor, and being with us every step of the way.
Happy Anniversary Blue Ribbon Flies!

July 16, 2010 Fishing Report
Craig Mathews
I apologize for the delay in bringing you this report. Yesterday over 400 of you helped us celebrate BRF's 30th anniversary at the Driftwaters Resort on the Madison River. Thanks to those of you who came to the party last night and to all how have called, sent emails and cards and more - it means so much to us here at Blue Ribbon Flies.
The fishing has been fantastic on all area waters and should continue. The Madison's world famous evening caddis activity has settled in and the fish are rising nightly from 8pm to dark; not only to caddis emergences but also hatches of Epeorus mayflies and crane flies too. Slough, Lamar and Soda Butte are all fishing well and so are many of the smaller, off-the-beaten-path streams too. Let's look at some water, hatches and flies to fish this coming week.
The Yellowstone River below Yellowstone Lake opened to angling yesterday. We remind you to fish the Yellowstone with caution, and we offer our deepest sympathy to those caught in the flows. There are hatches of stones and caddis, green drake and pmd mayflies and fish can be found rising if you walk the banks and hunt for them. This river can be eat your lunch so be very careful wading it.
The Lamar has dropped significantly this past week. Many of the old timers say it is "low" now, lower than they've seen it at this time.. ..Hard to believe after such huge water over the past several weeks. it is fishing well during little yellow stone, pmd and gray drake and caddis times. Salmon flies and golden stones can be found in the canyon stretch and the fish are rising. The same can be said for Soda Butte with good rises of trout daily during Heptagenia and pmd times too. The fish rise daily from 10am to 1pm on the mayflies then switch to little yellow stones and caddis until dark. Slough's gray drakes continue to bring up some very nice trout along with the insects listed for Lamar and Soda too.
The Gallatin River is on fire during PMD, green drake and Flavs and Epeorus mayfly times. Caddis are emerging in the late afternoons and evenings and the trout rise to all the above daily from 10am to dark and from the mouth of the canyon upstream into the park stretches.
The Henry's Fork is fishing very well. There are a lot of fish there taking caddis, Flavs, and PMD rusty spinners.Take your time, walk a lot, and fish to rising fish.
The Madison River below Earthquake Lake has fished very well this past week. The evening weather ahs settled in with warmer temps and no rain and the caddis emergences have been strong. $3.00 Bridge, the West Fork, Raynolds Bridge and downstream stretches around Lyon, Palisades, Story Ditch, and Varney Bridge are all fishing. Look for hatches of pmds, green drakes, Epeorus and a big Rhitrogenia sp of mayfly to bring up the trout. Several species of caddis are emerging and egg-laying now and early mornings and evenings have been awesome. Check out our blog for a couple mornings on the Madison reports. Flies needed include sparkle duns and spinner, caddis like Iris and X and Missing Links and Spent (deer hair and sparkles), crane flies and small stones. The nymphing anglers are having fun with Krystal and brown $3.00 Dips and our tiny mayfly nymphs . Stop in and let's talk fishing and flies and and how best to fish this great river! Do NOT forget midges like Improved Zelon and small G Gnat Emergers either!
Small streams like the upper Gardner, Grayling, Straight, Solfatara, Obsidian and Indian, Nez Perce and the Little Firehole are all fishing well. Too, lakes like Wolf, Grebe, Cascade, Avalanche and others are fishing so spend a day and explore some of these off-the-beaten-path waters while in Yellowstone country.
Hebgen's gulper action has picked up along with Earthquake Lakes fine dry fly fishing. Henry's Lake has hit its mid-summer slump with lots of fish showing on the graphs but few coming to the fly. Hidden, Elk, Cliff and Wade are all fishing well. Have damsel patterns and Callibaetis mayfly imitations like sparkle duns, spinners and nymphs and you will catch some great trout.
Take a look at stream flows, weather, and past fishing reports...
