Greetings!

Welcome to another Blue Ribbon Flies weekly newsletter. Thanks for tuning in. Settle in and we'll tell you what's happening around West Yellowstone and our other favorite spots, show you the fly and the material of the week, and tempt you to plan your next trip with us.

Hope you're enjoying summer, doing some fishing or at least planning some, tying up some flies, and getting this year's trip to Yellowstone country all planned out or already secured in the 2010 scrapbook. Take a break from work or play, grab a cup of coffee, and pretend you're leaning on the counter here at Blue Ribbon Flies. We wish you were here, but until you are we'll keep you in the loop. Thanks for stopping by.

 What's New
 What's Happening in Yellowstone Country

Deep Thoughts We've had a busy week here at Blue Ribbon. Hope your week has been a good one too. As we head into the weekend, we're full of fish stories, mosquito bites, and all manner of proof that we're outside and fishing in Yellowstone country.

Tomorrow, June 25th, is the Madison River Foundation's 8th annual "Guardians of the River" Gala banquet at the Old Kirby Place on the Madison River. Montana songbird Claudia Williams will be the featured entertainment this year, and will once again feature the culinary artistry of Zac Kellerman of Zac's Montana Kitchen in Livingston, our signature "One Day on the Madison" silent art auction, live music, and presentation of the 2010 Friend of the Madison Award.

The live auction at this year's gala will feature these exciting items: * Masters of the Madison: A day's fishing for two with four legendary anglers - Craig Mathews, Bob Jacklin, Mike Lawson and Kelly Galloup. This is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fish with and learn from each of these four famous fly fishers. * A week's trip for two to the beautiful tropical atoll Turneffe Flats Resort in Belize. This is your chance to score a saltwater grand slam - bonefish, permit and tarpon - on a fully guided trip to the premier luxury fishing resort in Belize. * A day's fishing for four rods on O'Dell Creek in Ennis, MT. Here's a rare opportunity to fish these private waters made famous by Nick Lyons in his book Spring Creek.

The following day, June 26th, is the wedding of our star guide of the week Drew and his fiancé. We wish them all the best! So there is much a-doing here.

As usual in the rest of this newsletter, you'll find fishing news from Yellowstone Country in the weekly Fishing Report. You can see what's hot off the vise in the Fly of the Week, get a sneak peak at some of the best materials on our tying bench in the Fly Tying Material of the Week, and stay up to date with the guide staff and their trips in the Guide Trip of the Week.

You'll be seeing a new email newsletter most every week throughout the spring to keep you tuned in to all things fly fishing in the greater Yellowstone area and beyond. Throughout the seasons, we'll keep sending you news of hatches and fishing holes around West Yellowstone. So without further delay, go ahead and jump right into the newsletter. And as always, don't hesitate to give us a call or shoot us an email if you have any questions, or if you just want a little fish talk.

Emerging Brown Drake As the seasons change, we will continue to do our best to provide a journal entry from some of our latest tying and fishing. We invite you to call and ask us what we've been up to if you get to wondering. We always have plenty of stories to tell.

Colin Cho sent us an interesting series of photos he took on Silver Creek of a brown drake emerging from its shuck on his friend's finger. It's great to see up close what goes on in the insect world, and why we tie and fish the flies we do. Thank you Colin!

June 23, 2010 Fishing Report Craig Mathews

Good dry fly fishing is coming at us quickly now and within the next week we can expect salmon flies and caddis to be in full swing on the Madison River from Earthquake Lake to Ennis, Montana. The Madison's flow has been lowered to 960 cfs from Hebgen Dam and the air temps are finally reaching into the 70's and forecasts call for low 80's this week. This is all great news for anglers, wild trout and wildlife. The tiny elk calves and pronghorn fawns in the Madison Valley will get a chance to warm up and enjoy some new grass for the first time in their young lives. Residents in Yellowstone can quit their complaining, me included, about lack of sun and warm temperatures. And, wild trout will enjoy rising to insects in clear water for the first time in a month too! Nearly every wildflower known to man is blooming now so it is a great time to come fish, explore, and enjoy Yellowstone country.

The long awaited Green Drake activity is beginning to show on the Henry's Fork and PMDs are coming off on several of our area's rivers and streams. I get excited thinking about all the fishing opportunities this area offers this time of year. I wish I had a twin so we could take advantage of even more fly fishing opportunities. Let's get to the report.

The Firehole River in the park continues to offer up strong PMD and caddis emergences. The trout rise daily, both in the morning and evening, to spinner falls, hatches, and egg laying periods. The river fishes best above the first iron bridge and upstream to Biscuit Basin now as the waters warm from Fountain Flats Drive downstream. The river's larger resident trout begin to move upstream to escape the warming waters so it's best to explore upstream areas like Midway, 2nd Iron Bridge, Muleshoe, White Cliffs, and Biscuit. Pale morning dun spinner falls come early this time of the season, 9-11am. PMD emergences might coincide with the spinner falls so you must be willing to change flies from a spinner to sparkle dun when coming upon larger fish keying on the duns and emergers. A PMD Foam Nymph or emerger and a PMD split case nymph are especially effective. Caddis flies are numerous on most afternoon and eves with several different species present. Look for black, white and tan caddis to be present and present the fish an Iris, X or X2 and spent sparkle pattern for success. Damsel flies are active now as are dragon flies and fishing an imitation of an adult an/or nymph is especially effective.

The Madison River in the park has been very good during PMD and caddis times. Early morning spinner falls are the rule, 9-11am. If the weather is overcast look for Baetis and PMD duns to emerge around 10am and last an hour or two. Evening caddis emergences can be fun to fish on the upper reaches from 9 Mile Hole upstream to the junction. White Millers are still heavy on this stretch and fishing a soft hackle emerger, Iris or spent pattern is deadly. Little Yellow Stones are very active in the rough and tumble water areas around the junction and downstream so have a #14 pattern along when encountering fish rising to these small stones too.

The Gibbon River has been fishing surprisingly well this season. Caddis, PMDs, Baetis, and stones in the lower canyon have all brought up good fish. If the brown drakes come off this year it will be in the next week and on the upper meadows

The Gardner River is beginning to fish. Look for salmon flies and golden stones. Give Walt a call at Park's Fly Shop in Gardiner, Montana for current information on this river. We have received several calls asking about the Lamar River lately. Do not even think about this one for another week, or better, two. Slough Creek is nearly ready to fish so check in with us for current information. If you fish this one when it initially clears it can be awesome!

The Madison River below the dam is slowing down now. Most post-spawning fish are back downstream in Earthquake Lake and the river below.

The Madison River near Ennis is just beginning to see some salmon fly activity. Yesterday the first good reports came in with guided float trips taking a few fish on the surface with Sunken Stones. This weekend we will see the big bugs jump upstream of Ennis to Varney Bridge. It looks like a strong salmon fly hatch is ahead for the next 2 weeks on this river. Caddis flies are beginning to bring trout to the surface all along the river, in selected spots. The river has been lowered and is clear to depths of 3 feet, and the trout are looking up. When guides and clients complain about trout taking their strike indicators while nymph fishing you know the fish are looking up! We have more and more reports of this occurring daily so be ready to fish dries on the river this coming week! Rubber leg stones, SJ Worms, big PT Flashbacks, #4-6 Prince Nymphs and $3.00 Dips are all working. Big Royal Wulff, Cripple Wulffs, and Stimies can be counted on now too to bring the fish up When caddis come off and the fish rise try Iris and #14 X and X2. Check out our new beaded caddis emergers Bucky brought in this week. Initial reports from guides, (usually the most skeptical), tell of wonderful results with these pretty bugs all along the Reynolds-$3.00 Bridge section of river.

The Gallatin River has fished fair this past week, upstream of the Taylor Fork Jct. Large stone nymphs and Royal Stimulators along with white sculpin streamers can be counted on. The river below Taylor Fork will remain high and turbid for the following 10-14 days after which we can expect a very strong salmon fly hatch. Stay tuned!

 Fly of the Week
 Hot off the Vise

X and X2 X Caddis and X2 Caddis

If you haven't fished with an X-Caddis, you've cost yourself a lot of fish! This cousin to the Sparkle Dun is simply a machine. Another concoction of zelon, dubbing, and deer hair; the X-Caddis is always our go-to fly for the epic caddis emergences.

And what about the X2? It's the caddis formerly know as the Improved X-Caddis. We brought you the X-caddis, and now we bring you the improved version. Hey, we don't let anything lie around, even a proven producer like the X.

Try them both, in olive and tan especially, in #14 - #18. You'll be glad you did.

See for yourself! Order a few X Caddis and X2 Caddis...

Thank You Zelon Dubbing and Deer Hair

If you are running low on Hydropsyche Tan Zelon Dubbing, or maybe you've never tried it, now is the time to stock up. As a matter of fact, stock up on all your favorite colors of zelon dubbing. Whether you want individual packets, or you want to try a zelon dubbing selection, we've got the colors you need to tie X Caddis, X2 Caddis, and all the other bugs on your list for this summer.

It's also a great time to load up on deer hair. Aaron and Tylor spent the better part of this week in the back garage cutting premium deer hides into select pieces of sparkle dun and X Caddis hair. Our bins are full, and we're ready for caddis season. You should get ready too. Call us today!

See what you can do with some zelon and deer hair...

 Schultz is Back!
 And He Brought More Boxes...

Tim Bozorth Fly Boxes From time to time we feature the handmade fly boxes Dave Schultz makes during the winter and brings in to the shop each summer. Perhaps even more than pictures of glacier lilies and baby elk and bison, evidence of new Schultz boxes means summer is truly here.

Schultz brought a few new jokes with him too, but unfortunately this is neither the time nor the place for those. What we can tell you is we have a new selection of beautifully crafted wooden fly boxes and a couple new jewelry boxes for you to choose from.

As you can see in this photo, Tim Bozorth has been quite a loyal collector of Schultz' boxes, so call us before he gets here. Just kidding - there are enough to share, but don't miss out on the whole bunch. And while we're kidding, did you hear the one about the priest, the lawyer, and the engineer?.. ..

Ask us about our fly boxes...

 The Painted Trout Line

Painted Trout Just In Time for Father's Day

Oh wait. We missed Father's Day? We missed the summer solstice too? What holiday, special occasion, or gift-giving reason can we present now to entice you with these unique and well-made novelties?

Well, to be honest, we like this new line so much we don't need a holiday to tell you about it. The Painted Trout bandanas, silk ties, cotton boxers, and silk scarves just arrived this week, and they're all really good looking and well priced! The colors are subtle on some articles, vibrant on others, the patterns are pleasing, and the quality is excellent.

The underpants range from small to x-large, and everything else is a standard size. Prices range from $9.99 for the bandanas in olive or salmon, $29.99 for the boxers in blue or green, $39.99 for the black silk scarf, to $49.99 for the silk tie in the light blue or the khaki design.

As usual, we have limited supplies, we haven't added these items to our website yet, and if you want to claim a scarf, a tie, or anything else pictured above for yourself or someone who's been especially nice to you lately, give us a call or add it to the comments section of your internet order. If you need an occasion or a reason, do it just because they won't be here long.

Give us a call today....

Hope you enjoy the latest issue. We'll keep 'em coming, keeping you up to date on the best fishing water, tips, and gear we can get our hands on. Let us know how you're fishing, and what you're up to. Keep those pictures and fish stories coming!
