Happy 100th Anniversary!
A very special Girl Scout milestone is quickly approaching! March 12, 2012 is the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting in the United States of America. On March 12, 1912 Juliette Gordon Low brought together 18 girls in Savannah, Georgia for the very first Girl Scout meeting.
Juliette built the organization with the strong belief that girls should be given the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. She thought that girls should be brought out of the isolated home environment and into communities, providing service and participating in outdoor activities, including sports and camping.
It is from this foundation that Girl Scouting has grown to more than 3.2 million members. While we may look different today, Girl Scouting still has the same goal, to empower girls and help them develop thier full potential.
Celebrate with Us!
Visit our 100th Anniversary Web page to see the 100th anniversary event calendar featuring council-wide celebrations and qualifying service unit events. Get Ready to Go Outdoors
It's hard to think about going outside right now with the winter weather, but spring really is just around the corner! That means it's time to begin planning your outdoor activities, especially if you're planning to go to resident camp. Reserve your space in the camp of your choice soon, as our summer resident camps fill quickly. See the Resident Camp Brochure for session listings. Many different day camps will also be held all over our council, so visit girlscoutsosw.org for details!
For Girl Scout Cadettes and older girls with outdoor skills, Tambu - an outdoor skills competition campout weekend where girls compete in orienteering, trail signs, fire building, knots, lashing, cooking and more- is held in the Portland/Metro area.
Girl Scout Juniors can have fun getting prepared for Tambu at Junior Tent Camp, held at the same location. This fun camping weekend includes many of the same activities done at Tambu, but in a non-competitive setting. Don't miss these enjoyable learning experiences!
Girls in the Woods is a week long camping experience for Junior Girl Scouts entering grades 5-8. Enjoy a week of tent camping in the Willamette National Forest in partnership with Forest Service staff who provide a huge array of outdoor education and adventure. Activities include hiking, GPS and wildlife Geocaching, wildlife surveying, archeology, aquatic biology and much more.

Have Your Troop Recorded in History!
In celebration of our centennial year, the 1912 Society honors 100 years of Girl Scouting and invests in the future of girls. Consider becoming a member today or honoring a Girl Scout in your life. You might also consider joining to honor your troop for this limited time opportunity.
Be one of the first 1,912 to donate $100 now through December 2012, and your name (or the individual/troop you choose to honor) will be permanently recognized on the Wall of Honor.
All donations by Girl Scout members of $100 or more can be credited towards the Family Partnership contest. Please specify your service unit, number of people in your troop and 1912 Society when making a donation.
Since troop numbers can be reassigned after a troop disbands, please use an identifier of your choice with your troop number such as "Troop 55555 the Dandelions" or use the leader's name, "Troop 55555, Jane Doe, Leader".

Service Project Idea | | |
Operation Happy Sock
Is your troop interested in pets? Most girls are pet lovers. Use this fun and easy service project idea to get younger girls involved in helping out their community, even the furriest members.

A Happy Sock is a big, fluffy catnip toy that we make by taking a sock, stuffing it with a combination of polyester fiberfill and catnip, and then tying a knot at the ankle. The result is a durable, huggable toy that cats can lick, kick and play with. While this may seem like a very simple project, a finished Happy Sock can provide hours of enjoyment for a cat or kitten in a shelter, while they await adoption. This is also a great way to use up all those single socks, whose mate was lost in the wash. Most groups do Operation Happy Sock in these three phases:
- Collect socks well in advance of the project (2-3 weeks before).
- Have a Happy Sock production party, where the toys are actually made.
- Visit your local animal shelter to donate the items - your group may be able to arrange for a tour, educational program or to give the socks to the cats themselves.
For more information about Operation Happy Sock check out the blog: ohappysock.blogspot.com.
