Win $500 of Dairy!

The Dairy Farmers of Oregon has offered us a valuable prize to celebrate our second year of partnership: a year's worth of dairy products valued at $500! This great prize will be given away to one lucky Girl Scout family as part of a special Facebook contest. Post a photo showing how your Girl Scouts enjoy fresh, Pacific Northwest dairy products and you could be the winner! Learn more and enter to win today!

NEW: Sign up for Sudden Service

For sudden calls for Girl Scout assistance, Girl Scouts OSW is forming a team that truly knows the meaning of "Be Prepared!"

The Sudden Service program was created to connect girls to service opportunities that come up at the last minute. Troops or individual girls can sign up, and will be notified when we have last minute requests to help in the community. This can be anything from a flag ceremony, helping younger girls, supporting an assisted living facility and more. This opportunity is open to girls of all grade levels.

and Day Camp Manager, (800) 338-5248 x 6823 or lshapiro@girlscoutsosw.org.

Vera E. Heidenreich/Willagillespie Community Center Endowment Fun

The VEH/WCC Endowment Fund was established in 2001 and its proceeds were to be used for special needs. "Special needs" has been defined by the fund committee as follows:

  • Special needs include activities, events, equipment and/or enrichment opportunities that are unknown or unforeseen at the time the council budget is adopted and which will help advance the council goal of bringing Girl Scout program to all girls.
  • As many girls as possible should benefit. This could be done through an event or activity, through the purchase of program equipment or through paying to train an adult or girl who will then share information and knowledge with others.
  • This will be a one-time award.
  • The funding must be used in the same program year in which it is awarded.

Note: The money will not be awarded for camperships.

Application Process
Applications will be accepted from registered Girl Scouts (includes girls, volunteers and staff) in the period of January 1 - 28. The award of funds will be announced by February 28.

The application should include the following information:

  • Name, address and phone number of applicant.
  • Requested amount, keeping in mind that the typical award available is approximately $500.
  • How, where and when the money will be spent.

Applications can be mailed or hand-delivered to the Eugene Service Center (1577 Pearl Street Ste 300, Eugene, OR 97401), Attn: VEH/WCC Fund Committee. Applications must be postmarked no later than January 28.

In the event that no applications are received, available funds will be awarded for a special need at the discretion of the VEH/WCC fund committee and/or its representative.

Call for Girl Scout Photos

Do you have great photos from events or activities that took place in your troop or with your Girl Scout during our 2010-2011 membership year? We are looking for photos - at local day camps, service projects and more - exhibiting Girl Scouting's three leadership keys: Discover, Connect and Take Action.

As part of this year's annual meeting (Saturday, April 21, 2012 at Portland State University in Portland), we will be presenting a slide show of photos from around our council highlighting girls as they discover, connect and take action in Girl Scouting. We are now accepting digital photo submissions. We ask that each photo be accompanied by the following information:

  • Service unit/Troop number and/or individual girl/volunteer name
  • Date photo taken
  • Event (if applicable) where photo was taken
  • Names of individual(s) in photo
  • Contact name, phone and email of individual submitting photo (in case we need to ask additional questions)

All photos must be submitted in digital format (email, CD, memory stick, etc.) no later than Friday, April 6, 2012. There is no limit to the number of photos a troop, volunteer or girl may submit, however not all photos submitted may be used. Direct all submission to Stephanie Smetana (ssmetana@girlscoutsosw.org) at the Portland Service Center (9620 SW Barbur Blvd., Portland, OR 97219).

Will You Be One of the 1,912?

Joining the 1912 Society is a once in a lifetime opportunity to honor the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting while also ensuring that girls in your community will benefit from our mission for years to come.

Secure your place on the Wall of Honor by being one of the first 1,912 individuals or troops/groups to make a contribution of $100 toward the 1912 Society between now and December 2012. Learn more about this opportunity at girlscoutsosw.org.

Remember, all funds benefit financial assistance for girls. Become a founding member today!

Encouraging New, Small Day Camps

Day camp season is coming up! Last summer we had 28 day camps throughout the council and we continue to grow.
New this year is an option for small day camps.

Sometimes it can be overwhelming to plan a day camp - especially starting a new one - and sometimes it seems like there are too many tools when just running a small day camp. For the summer of 2012, we are creating a small day camp manual. This will simplify the process for day camps that run on a smaller scale (under 60 girls).

Consider learning more about starting a day camp of any size. Trainings are coming up in January and February.

Contact Lauren Shapiro, Council Program
and Day Camp Manager,  at (800) 338-5248 x 6823 or lshapiro@girlscoutsosw.org for more information.

Resident Camp = Adventure!

Resident camp registration is now open and is filling up fast! Help the Girl Scouts in your life find their adventures today by viewing our online brochure. Copies of the brochure have also been mailed to all registered members.

Are you or a parent/guardian you know unsure of whether their Girl Scout is ready for sleepaway camp? Take our online girl and parent quizzes to find out!

Why Resident Camp? At resident camp, girls:

  • Discover a new understanding of themselves and their values.
  • Explore new skills and interests.
  • Connect with new friends.
  • Gain experience in community living.
  • Take action around camp and learn ways to make the world a better place after camp.
  • Make choices as a group about what they want to do, and then do it!
  • Have fun!

Girls not ready to attend camp on their own can consider Core Camp - a program in which girls get to come to camp with their troop and leaders - or She & Me and Me & My Guy, programs that provide a chance for girls to come to camp with a trusted adult.

Tiered pricing
In trying to keep camp affordable for all families while also expressing the true cost of camp, we have adopted tiered pricing. All campers will enjoy the same camp experience regardless of which price the family can afford. Learn more about tiered pricing by visiting the 2012 Resident Camp Brochure.

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character,
who make the world a better place.
