Day Camp

Summer 2011

Did you know some of our day camps are still looking for campers?  We have several camps with spaces for girls in Salem, Eugene and a few others throughout our council. Camps have units for your girls and separates unit for tagalongs (preschool aged children and boys).

All of our camps are 100% volunteer run and need the support of caring adults to be successful. Most camps are still looking for volunteers.

Journeys and Badges

Every month, we are promoting Q&A about the new program materials from our program resource Web page. View the Q&A>>

Make Your Own Badges

A new, cool feature in The Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting is that girls will now be able to create her own badge every year and get it professionally made.  Here is what we know so far:
  • Will make your own badges require council approval? No, girls will work with volunteers to make them and the last step requires an adult's signature.
  • Once a girl creates her own badge, can other girls earn it? No because girls gains skills in choosing the topic and from the process of creating the badge. Therefore, girls can only earn the badges they create.
  • What will be the process to make your own badge? After the girl has developed the idea and the requirements, she will log on to a Make Your Own badge website (with adult supervision). There, she will choose a design icon from a gallery of pre-approved images. When she is finished designing, she will submit her badge and the licensed vendor will produce and ship it.
  • How many of these can a girl earn? Girls can earn one per year.
  • Will all make your own badges look the same? They will have appropriate grade level shape and the border will match the grade level color.

Girl Scout Leadership Institute

November 10-14, 2011

The Girl Scout Leadership Institute (GSLI) is a program based on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Girl leaders in Girl Scouting come together for interactive sessions and discussions on current issues impacting girls and the movement.

More than 1,200 girls - girls from every Girl Scout council in the nation - will converge in Houston for the 2011 National Girl Scout Leadership Institute (GSLI) held parallel to the National Council Session from November 10-13. This year's GSLI theme is "Leadership and Innovation, the Next 100 Years," with a focus on interactive sessions designed to excite, inspire, and prepare girls to become leaders and encourage them to take action in the world around them.

Each Girl Scout council has been invited to bring a group of ten Girl Scouts ages 13 and older, as well as two chaperones in accordance with GSUSA safety guidelines for this age level.

Girls will participate in the opening and closing ceremonies and attend sessions that concentrate on the following:

  • Global connections
  • I Girl Scouts
  • Innovation in marketing
  • Innovation in business
  • Innovation in technology
  • Leadership

Additionally, as part of the GSLI, girls will do their part to kick off Girl Scouts Forever Green and participate in other convention activities including the plenary sessions and the Conversations of Consequence. The GSLI will wrap up on Saturday, November 12, in time for girls to join in the 100th anniversary celebration  and evening festivities.

Registration information for girls and chaperones: If you are interested in representing GSOSW at the leadership institute please register in Personify by July 20.  The final group will be selected July  22. Registration cost is $150 for girls $150 & $245 for adults; does not include transportation. Registration begins 6/10/11 and the registration fee must be paid by July 28.
