Joke time!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A drunk staggers into the lounge of a hotel where an insurance convention is being held, intent on causing trouble. He yells, “I think all insurance agents are crooks, and if anyone doesn’t like it, come up and do something about it!”
Immediately, a man runs up to the drunk and says, “Take that back!”
The drunk sneers and replies, “Why, are you an agent?”
“No,” the man replies, “I’m a crook.”
The Greatest Insurance Story Never Told
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Long ago, in a marketplace far, far away, the insurance universe was governed by a quiet yet powerful group known as actuaries. Although it was unknown to many in the general population, those familiar with the industry knew an actuary’s word was law. They alone could translate the Law of Large Numbers into practical, everyday rate calculations. Only they, using their mystical arts, understood how to let go of their feelings and trust regressive analysis to guide their determinations. Their greeting, “May the rating bureaus be with you,” comforted the multitudes afraid of devastating price wars.

Brand Tip: Questioning Employees and Customers

In a word, the very best brands are about passion. Show me a strong local or regional independent agency, and I’ll show you owners and employees who are passionate about what they do. They also have raving fans—otherwise known as happy customers.

As an agency principal, can you feel any energy around the office? If no, this is a serious problem— and you hopefully realize the cause, or causes. If yes, how do you tap into this passion, and build on it?

When it comes to branding, start from the inside out.

Book of the Month
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Leadership Sopranos Style, by Deborah Himsel.
At first, everything about this text seems silly: It’s a fictional television show, and Tony Soprano is a criminal. Illustrating the leadership capability of television’s Tony and incorporating it into mainstream business seems like a joke. (For the three people in the world that don’t know, Tony is a mafia boss whose “breaka ya’ face” methods may seem a bit rough.)
But readers will find Himsel impressively outlining the show’s practical lessons in pragmatic leadership. Leaders learn that being tough doesn’t mean breaking faces, friendships, or the law.
Read the book and discuss it with fellow employees. And please, resist the urge to do it with an Italian accent.
IIF Rating: nove out of dieci.
IIF Poll!
Has anyone in your office mastered the art of “meeting speak?” Here’s an example: “Our team is gathered for this pow-wow so we can get everybody on the same page and tackle this issue full speed ahead. Let’s kick this brain trust into high gear, get those wheels turning, and throw out some ideas that will help us collect the low-hanging fruit, shoot the elephants, and keep the tail from wagging the dog.”
At IIF, we love this stuff! If you have some favorite “meeting speak” that you’d like to share, please send your comments to feedback@insuranceisfun.com.
We may just put them (and a translation, if you like) in an upcoming issue!
