"There is no more creative force in the world than the menopausal woman with zest." by Margaret Mead

Join us as ww.BoomerWomenSpeak.com celebrates six years online! Halloween marks our six year anniversary and we're celebrating by offering membership in the National Association of Baby Boomer Women at the reduced rate of $50.00. That's a $25.00 savings.

The National Association of Baby Boomer Women is the only association devoted to addressing issues concerning 38 million of the healthiest, wealthiest, and best educated generation of women to ever hit midlife. They offer a jam-packed package of member benefits.

NABBW is dedicated to:
  • Empowering women to explore their passions and live life to the fullest.
  • Connecting, encouraging, and supporting baby boomer women.
We hope you'll join us today.

Have a medical question you've been dying to have answered? Then read on...

We are also celebrating by offering a FREE teleseminar with two of our NABBW health experts, Janet Horn, MD and Robin H. Miller, MD, who authored the book that's getting lots of attention, The Smart Woman's Guide to Midlife & Beyond: A No-Nonsense Approach to Staying Healthy After 50. Please see the details below and be sure to mark your calendars now so you can be on the call. And be sure to send your questions for the doctors to [email protected].

I attended the More Magazine Reinvention Convention in NYC last week and I've got to tell you, the above quote rings true. It was inspiring to be among several hundred midlife women who are interested in remaining educated and empowered. Topics covered pertained to finance, health/fitness (presented by our own NABBW expert Dr. Pamela Peeke), reinvention in the middle years, beauty, and fashion. I'm sharing quotes and tid-bits offered by Jean Chatzky, Isaac Mizrahi, Carly Fiorina, Lisa Johnson, Tim Quinn (Armani), Cybill Shepherd and many more in our NABBW Weekly Updates. Please email me if you're interested in attending the Third Annual in 2009. I think it would be great fun to attend as a group.

I'd love you to make time to read our articles linked below. I was especially touched by many of them and their relevance to what's happening with our generation at this very moment.
  • Jan shares some important statistics about theory vs. reality for women over 45. You might want to see how you fit in.
  • Barb talks about the seven (non-financial) tips for saving our family fortune.
  • Diane tells us how to shift our spending to eco-friendly products.
  • Our doctors, Robin and Janet, talk about breast cancer prevention and Janice helps with menopausal weight gain.
  • Our humorist Georgia shares her perspective on boomers who try to dress like they're cool. I've seen them. I'm sure you have too.
  • Sheri' and Jennifer address midlife entrepreneurs, while Nan shares how three generations can get along in the workplace.
  • Natalie tells us how to have love in our empty nests.
  • Prill writes about being silent, which is something I thing all of need to do; be still and take time for self.
Tell me, is there anything listed that you can't relate to?

Because some of our readership are midlife entrepreneurs, I want to share a new resource offered by the Small Business Administration. The SBA recently unveiled a Web site for the baby boomer entrepreneur. It provides excellent information for launching and growing small businesses.

More big news is that Sunsweet has partnered with the NABBW and BWS, and is now an official sponsor! Now more than ever, it is important to realize that digestion plays a significant role in your overall health. On their site you'll find information on different digestive disorders, tips to help you feel fabulous, and much more. There's even a quiz to test your Digestive Health IQ. Their generous sponsorship expresses the value they place on educating boomer women everywhere with ways to improve our health. We share that mission wholeheartedly with them. Be sure to visit their Web site and www.plumsmart.net to see the additional wealth of information available.

Thanks to companies like Sunsweet for recognizing the importance of partnering with the NABBW by joining forces to offer educational resources and products we need to restore digestive health to our bodies.

And now, onward with grace!

Blessings,
Dotsie Bregel

Diane Black
New Mexico Soap
www.newmexicosoap.com

DDiane Blackiane Black is an entrepreneur who wants to make the world a cleaner place, one bar of soap at a time.  She, along with her husband Dave, is the co-founder and owner of New Mexico Soap in Southern New Mexico.

The business started out the way many entrepreneurs begin, as a hobby. When her step-daughter announced her engagement, Diane had the creative idea to make unique wedding favors; guest-sized soap in shapes of Victorian fans, little champagne glasses, and dancing bride and groom. They were a big hit; the wedding guests went nuts over them and New Mexico Soap was off and running!

Family and friends started to place orders for this unparalleled soap so their business expanded from a dining room hobby to a soap shop and separate wood shop. Wholesaling first to local gift stores, then nationwide, increased business as visitors to New Mexico searched for souvenirs and special mementoes from the locals. Their booth can be found weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, at the Las Cruces, NM Farmer's and Craft Market.
State-Shaped Soaps
A native of the East Coast, former Executive Manager for the Tupperware Corporation and President's Club Member of Avon, Diane has taken on many of the attributes the desert and Southwest have to offer. Her creative ideas began to bubble, as soap began to take on custom-designed bars in shapes such as chile peppers, Mimbres (Indians) Ancient Art designs, and the state of New Mexico, among other states and other Southwest motifs. As evidence that the entrepreneurial mind does not quit, a middle-of-the-night revelation came to her to use the regional commodity of pecans, in meal form, as the exfoliating additive to the soap. After researching the nutritive benefits of the pecan, she couldn't resist featuring the soap in the shape of a pecan half as it also acts as a nice massaging bar.
Shea Butter
The quality ingredients give life to the lather of the soap.  A natural vegetable oil recipe enables the Blacks to produce soap bases that are 100 percent pure soap which includes the natural by-product of glycerin, a humectant necessary for moisture retention. Diane states this is a key difference between their handmade soap and those found commercially produced.

Is being in the soap business rewarding?  Diane whole-heartedly believes it is based on the testimonials given by her customers. Using natural soaps is so beneficial to the skin, especially their added product offering of Pure, Unrefined Shea Butter---food for the skin! At New Mexico Soap you are buying the REAL thing--not just an ingredient or a small amount as an additive. There's more about this on their website, which includes the added plus of quality and competitive pricing of all their products!

When asked about all the whimsical ideas for their soap, Diane gives credit to her husband and her father, the most creative people she knows. The encouragement and support from family and friends aids New Mexico Soap in the success it has received thus far. They have also been known to create specialty bars upon request, something in which they pride themselves!

When not soaping, Diane enjoys crossword puzzles, reading inspirational books, the New York Times, goes to lunch with friends, eats (too much!) Caliches (a local frozen custard treat), and plays with their fur-babies, which include dogs, cats and goats. Diane's a true entrepreneur who enjoys hearing that customers' skin feels SO much better---one bar of soap and an application of Shea butter at a time!
