Boomer Womens' World
March 2008

Greetings!

"The path to our destination is not always a straight one. We go down the wrong road, we get lost, we turn back. Maybe it doesn't matter which road we embark on. Maybe what matters is that we embark." ---Barbara Hall

Greetings,

In the course of a day, I correspond with many women from our generation. While some are thrilled with midlife and all it offers, others are down in the dumps, feeling stuck and considering how to make a change. The above quote reminded me that sometimes, all we need to do is make one little change to set life in a new direction. I encourage all of us to be brave and consider doing just one new thing that may begin a new path for us. Embark!

Reading the articles this month was amazing because almost every single one of them shares insight on the embarking process. Whether it has to do with health, caring for our aging parents or assessing midlife, they are all call to action articles. Prill Boyle offers Part II of Moving Forward, while others used terms such as: conscious living, balancing your dreams, clinging to comfort zones and mapping out our caregiving activities. I invite you to browse and take action.

Looks like boomer women will be taking in the Vegas sites the weekend of April 11-13, 2008. The The Forum Community has been hounding me for an opportunity to meet face to face. Many of us have met as we've traveled the US and Europe, but it's time for us to gather for a Girl's Weekend Get-Away, nothing but fun. Please email [email protected] if you are interested in joining us.

Onward with grace,
Dotsie

NEW WRITING CONTEST!
Favorite Concert Memories

I recently attended Rain: The Beatle's Experience. If this show comes to your town, see it! The walk down memory lane was exhilarating. Being amidst all the hair dye, highlights, gray hair, and balding men tickled and energized me. Stiff, conservative men in their button down, oxford shirts were belting out lyrics and chair dancing like I've never seen before. This was my generation at midlife acting just like we did as teens. I was feeling more groovy than I had in years.

Flashbacks to the Ed Sullivan show, men walking on the moon, Prell commercials, the white album, flower power, peace signs and so much more rushed through my mind. For two hours, I was stuck in the 60s. It was a trip.

So I got to thinking... how about a contest that takes us back to the good old days of dancing and screaming at concerts...

Here's the contest. You have 500 words to tell us your favorite concert memory. Lay it on us. Knock yourself out. Take us back. Who were you with, what were you wearing, and what music were you jammin' to?

Submissions should be written in a Word document with FAVORITE CONCERT MEMORY in the subject line, and attached to an email addressed to [email protected].

Deadline - April 15th
PRIZE MONEY - $100.00 and F-R-E-E membership or renewal in the National Association of Baby Boomer Women. Plus your story will be placed in the Our Voices section at www.boomerwomenspeak.com. Please make sure to include your name, email address, and short bio at the top of your entry NOT in the body of the email.

Good luck!

Blessing in the Mire

After the suicide of her son, Ryan, author J. Deelstra wrestles with pain and searches for meaning. During the time that follows the tragic event she begins searching for deliverance from her grief and sturggles to understand. Blessings in the Mire offers Deelstra's healing reflections as she employs what some may consider unconventional approaches to dealing with her loss: she calls on the synchronicty of the universe, the presence of angels and astrological teachings. Her philosophies are thought provoking yet calming and peaceful. She offers expressive words and poetic imagery as she describes the myriad of emotions she experiences and creates a marbled effect: beauty lying beside devastation, chaos intertwined with order, peace laced with upheaval.

This intimate revealing of emotion may "not be for everyone," as stated on the back cover of the book. The author's candid assessment of life, of the people who support her and the events that unfold around her will either seem refreshing and cathartic or slightly hard to grasp, and this will depend upon the reader's perspective---as is usually the case when reviewing artisitic creations. J. Deelstra may introduce the reader to some unfamilar concepts but the outcome may be the spurring of exploration into the many varied resources available to bring rest to the heart and soul during times of turmoil.

Now What?

Eleven men and eight women over the age of fifty share their stories of triumph and success. Whether it's embarking on a new career, restructuring family life or planning for retirement they are living proof that the second half of life can be a rewarding adventure. James Armstrong is the founder and president of James Armstrong and Associates, Inc., an international media representative firm. He has spent over thirty years as a marketing consultant and is also a minister at the Fresh Harvest church in Woodstock, Illinois.

In Now What? Armstrong presents the reader with knowledge of the changing job market, employment trends, career opportunties and then offers examples of what men and women all over the country are doing to reinvent themselves as they head into midlife. Concise and purposeful chapters provide accounts of the skillful navigation around life's obstacles to find a niche: Lyn Carlson, a registered nurse who decided to become a flight instruction school owner; Linda Krinop who took the plunge right before her 50th birthday and became a B&B Proprietor; John Wehling, a retired teacher, turned gentleman farmer. Their experiences offer a hint as to what can be ours if we are willing to embrace change and remain flexible.

Personal accounts are always inspiring, as they are in this compilation. The extra peace of mind that Armstrong seeks to hand us with his knowledge of job markets and trends comforts the reader who may be facing issues in this arena, and is a worthwhile addition to your library.

A Healthier You! has been comprised of enlightening interviews with people like Dr. Deepak Chopra, "one of the world's greatest leader in the field on mind body medicine," and Billy Blanks, the creator of Tae Bo; their instruction for tapping into the inner strengths that enable wellness from the inside-out is priceless. The energy that pours from the pages of A Healthier You! is infectious. Addressing issues from low self-esteem to lower back pain; from the use of humor as the ultimate medication to tuning into your "sixth sense"---it's all here, and regardless of your station in life, your profession or your age the information serves as useful ideas to becoming a better and more fulfilled you. Contributions from professionals who have utilized the outlined skills to do things like quit smoking or combat weight issues are concise, easy to read and easily applied.

I am a huge fan of Deepak Chopra; anything he says catches my attention and moves me, so I was all too happy to read his light yet thought-provoking interview. Another feature I found especially empowering was the contribution from Dr. Helene Leonetti on learning to love ourselves. Each chapter written is authored by some of the nation's most impressive wellness and fitness experts and ends with their short biography along with ways in which to contact them. A Healthier You! is wonderful "food for thought" and practical advice that serves just about anyone on their quest to experience a healthy, vibrant life.

Organizing Yourself For The "Eldercare Stage"
By Barbara E. Friesner

It's virtually impossible to accurately predict the extent or length of the commitment to eldercare but for many caregivers, it's a lot longer than they ever imagined. In fact, in last month's column, I mentioned an interview with Roberta Satow for my Expert Interview Series (Interview ), in which she talks about caregiving as "a stage of life". She explains that, unlike our parents who provided care for their parents for an average of 1-5 years, our own parents are living a lot longer now.

Are you sneezing and wheezing?
By Robin Miller, M.D.

Spring is filled with flowers, green grass, and for some . . . sneezing, wheezing and runny eyes and noses! The most likely cause of spring allergies is tree pollen. However, mold and animal dander can also be contributing.

How can you know for sure? Get allergy tested. If your doctor can pinpoint the cause of your symptoms, the therapy can be tailored to what you need.

Accomplishing Your Dreams Requires Balance
By Sheri McConnell

Achieving balance in our lives is accomplished by saying no when we need to and learning to set priorities. And we cannot achieve balance without understanding what our particular needs are. Balance is different for everyone. It means that you have identified your priorities and have not overextended yourself. Balance means you are aware of the dangers of burnout. Balance means that when asked the question, "Are you happy?" you can answer yes.

Good Times for Empty Nesters
By Natalie Caine

I have received emails from parents saying, "I can't believe it. I am having fun in my empty nest." Sure their face brightens when the children call or come to visit. A father said to a friend when they were waiting in line for the movies, "Watch her face (referring to the mother in line) when I ask about how her daughter is doing. The mother instantly grins, eyes twinkle and she gets very talkative."

Walk a Mile in My Shoes

I have four tiny sisters and although I've signed them all up for the Chocolate of the Month Club, the ingrates haven't gained an ounce. Life is just not fair sometimes.

How Ill-Mannered Are You?

Thinking of selling your home when you retire? Recent research may help you determine an asking price.
