Boomer Womens' World
June 2007

Greetings!

"Why not got out on a limb. That is where all the fruit is." --- Will Rogers

Greetings,

I am learning that boomer women are living the above quote and bearing much fruit. I encourage you to do the same.

Welcome to this issue.

Sometimes I think the NABBW associates are hiding in the walls of my home or listening to my phone calls. That's one of the reasons I love my job. I read their articles and feel as though they are speaking to me.

Be sure to read to the end of the newsletter if you find yourself:

  • Giving more than expected to your elders
  • Living in the past when you shouldn't
  • With boomerang children moving back to the nest
  • Considering traveling or retiring
  • Embracing aging with a go for it attitude
  • Needing to drop weight or give up smoking
  • Interested in growing your business
  • Facing a diagnosis for a loved one or yourself
Please take note of our new associate and Weight Loss Coach, Janice Taylor. She is thrilled to give you a special offer noted at the end of her introduction below.

The results of the NABBW survey shared that you wanted more opportunities for online education so be on the lookout July 2nd for the launch of the Boomer Women Resource Center. Our cybrary will begin by addressing the following topics with many more to come in the near future: male menopause, identity theft, personal coaching, midlife mental and emotional health, the entrepreneurial boomer women, making elder care decisions, and how to increase Web traffic.

If you're curious about how and why BWS and the NABBW were launched, please listen in on Tuesday, June 19 during an hour teleseminar where I'll share that information and answer any questions you have. I look forward to putting more voices together with names. This call is open to everyone. Please see more information below.

Time to sit back, grab your favorite drink, and get in the know by reading about all things boomer women.

We are happy to announce that when searching "baby boomer women" online, www.BoomerWomenSpeak.com is ranked first on Google, and www.nabbw.com is ranked first on Yahoo. Why not advertise with us? Email me at [email protected] for advertising rates.

Onward with grace,

I cannot express my gratitude enough to Dotsie for sharing her resources. I hired Michelle at Boschel Creative to do the web site for my book, "Got Teeth? A Survivor's Guide How to keep your teeth or live without them." Michelle is a terrific designer, wonderful to work with, open to ideas, responsive, and a true professional.

I have had a tremendous response to my web site. It is professional, easy to navigate, uncluttered, and it has everything I wanted on it. I continue to receive compliments. Kudos to Michelle for her expertise and to Dotsie for sharing. The NABBW discount I received for using Michelle's web design was an added and welcome bonus!

    My Favorite Midlife Crisis (Yet)
    By Toby Devens

    Reviewed by Georgia Richardson, www.queenjawjaw.com

What happens when a beautiful, 50-something OB/Gyn specialist discovers her husband of 26 years is leaving her for another man? Her world crumbles before her very eyes.

Now what? This wasn't supposed to happen. She's finally reached "midlife" where the years are supposed to give back, to be the best ones of her life, however, she has to divide her emotions and time between a father who's in the throws of Alzheimer's, and an ex-husband who is constantly in need of her forgiveness. To top it off, she's single after 26 years of marriage.

After two years of hiding out from life, and of deep reflection, Gywneth realizes she is an empty nester, has money, a thriving OB/Gyn practice, good friends, and a beautiful apartment. The only thing missing is Mr. Right. It's time to move on.

And move she does! With the help of her two zany, yet lovable friends, Fleur and Kat, she takes us through each adventure and each misadventure struggling to reinvent her life, learning to trust again, and also learning how to let go, and ultimately, to forgive. While coming to terms with different kinds of loss is a part of the theme within the pages of this wonderful book, it's certainly not the dominant one. I found much love, laughter, and hope in every chapter. In my opinion, these three mismatched friends, each with a secret side, bring this midlife story to life from the get-go.

My advice is to pick up this book, read a chapter, cry, laugh hysterically, moan, whatever . . . then call you best friend and read it to her. Repeat daily. It wasn't hard at all to love each character. What was hard . . . was leaving them.

You owe it to your Boomer self to read, My Favorite Midlife Crisis - Yet. You'll be so glad you did!

    SANDWICHED CELEBRATIONS
    By Barbara E. Friesner

June . . . weddings, graduations, and Father's Day. Days of joy for you and your family. But as a Baby Boomer woman, do you find yourself once again sandwiched between celebration and obligation? If so, perhaps it's time to invite others into your sandwich!

When I visited my mother in the nursing home on Mother's Day, there were a lot of women who, like me, were visiting alone. Many of them told me that they were visiting their mothers and mothers-in-laws before going home to their own Mother's Day festivities with their husbands and children. There were also lots of families there visiting their mothers. But as I looked around, I noticed that, while the daughters/daughters-in-law were interacting with the Moms, for the most part, the rest of the family was hanging back, some shifting uncomfortably.

10 Quickest Ways to Feel Joy
    By Cathy Taylor

You wake up feeling joyful but at some point the events of your day interfere with that blissful stream. You may find yourself feeling stranded. Where did my joy go? And more important, how do I get it back?

Joy is a natural state of being. If you let yourself express the true feeling that you can find in your heart at any given moment, it is a peaceful state of bliss. It can get blocked, however, by how we are responding to the events in our day.

What can you do to quickly bring yourself back into alignment when you find yourself at odds and missing your ecstatic state?

7 Ways to Market Online Using "How To" Articles
    By Sheri McConnell

As the President of the Association of Web Entrepreneurs I help entrepreneurs create systems and automate their online businesses so that they can make more money and enjoy more freedom in their lives. To do this, I teach them only the most effective online marketing techniques, and article marketing is one of them.

Here are my 7 favorite ways (and a checklist for you) to market online using how to articles. Don't worry about writing completely new articles for each of these; just reuse your articles. To be more productive, create a system and schedule a day for writing and a day for posting your articles once a month or even once a week!

    THEY'RE BACK
    By Natalie Caine

There is more to life than increasing its speed --- Gandhi

I love the feeling of the word summer. Playtime is expected and we are even given more light.

Whether our children are at home or away , I think we need to plan our own playtime , which of course all of us know, but and yes there is a but . . . we wait to see if our kids will be home or if they might want to go to dinner or the beach or a movie.

We aren't dependent. We simply love having time with our children. Isn't it a challenge when they first come back home to not wait and see what they are going to do? Isn't it a challenge to not ask too many questions like are you ok? They haven't had to explore that question with us for a long time. They know we care, and at the same time they might feel invaded by the caring question. Isn't it a challenge to step into these new parenting roles and not feel shot down or like a fool?

    The Joy of Aging
    By Prill Boyle

It's hard to tell whether Nora Ephron, the wonderfully witty author of I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman, is being serious when she declares: "This insistence on the joy of aging . . . is all garbage."

But if she is, I couldn't disagree more.

While growing old has its obvious perils (knee replacements are no fun!), it also has its pleasures.

I just returned from eating dinner with nine women who are well into Ephron's "third act." (At 53, I was by far the youngest.)

One is learning to play the cello. Another just returned from a six-week textile-hunting trip to India. A third went skydiving to celebrate her 70th birthday.

    ALL IN A DAY'S WORK
    By Nan S. Russell

You may have seen this headline or heard about it on the news: "Sex, Shopping and Gambling All in a Day's Work." It was generated by an Interior Department report, citing compelling numbers from an investigation that discovered one million log entries involving 7700 employees visiting auction, gaming, gambling and sex sites on company time. The article finished with plans being implemented to curb offenses and punish violators.

Employees whose behavior is the equivalent of stealing time, misusing company equipment and breaking trust with untrustworthy or unprofessional behaviors, should have serious repercussions for their choices.

So, don't get me wrong. But I found the sound-bite disturbing, seemingly confirming a belief held by some with executive parking places, that employees can't be trusted. I worked for a company once that viewed internet access as an acceptable risk only for employees with certain titles. As if title alone equals trustworthy behavior. Publicized greed and misdeeds of corporate executives annihilate that theory.

How to Market Your Business While You Sleep; Ten Foolproof Systems
    By Suzanne Falter-Barns

For many Net marketers, marketing is a love-hate relationship. We love the traffic and sales that a good push brings . . . but we have to force ourselves to do it.

So lately, I've been looking for systems anyone can implement that get the job done while you're pursuing other interests. The Net really is designed to do exactly this - so let's take advantage of it.

Please do note, these tasks are specifically chosen for anyone who is interested in building platform - or attracting a much broader audience so they can be appealing to media, publishers, etceteras. (Please see my bio box below for more on this.)

Also, please note some of these tasks rely on a virtual assistant to implement. These are long-distance assistants who help you get things done via email, phone and the Net. They can be found simply by googling 'virtual assistant,' or by using any good VA search firm.

    Looking Back
    By Donna Shepherd

I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 3:14 nkjv

I don't drive on the interstate often. Recently I had a meeting to attend which necessitated a forty-minute drive on the highway. Before backing out of the garage, I strapped my seatbelt, adjusted my mirrors, checked my directions, and prayed. In fact, I prayed for the next forty minutes!

As I whizzed down the road at sixty, okay seventy miles per hour, I checked my rear-view mirrors often. Many years ago in driver's education, my instructor told me to check my mirrors frequently while driving. As I passed through downtown at rush hour, I could keep my eye on the semis, aggressive drivers who rushed past me like I stood still, or the drivers distracted by cell phones.

Looking back is advantageous at times. In life, looking back can be an education. We can learn what not to do by examining our mistakes and reflecting on lessons learned. Hopefully as we age, we become wiser, and less apt to repeat the mistakes of the past.

"Your Soul Will Lead You Home "
By Judith Sherven, Ph.D. & James Sniechowski, Ph.D.

    There is a particular verse, performed by Sinead O'Connor . . .

    "Thank you for loving me,
    Thank you for seeing me,
    Thank you for hurting me,
Thank you for tearing me apart."

While it's possible to interpret this lyric as an ode to abuse, you'd miss the deepest meaning if you headed off in that direction.

Instead, let's look at what it means to be loved. Truly loved. It doesn't mean dancing in the daisies without a care in the world. And it doesn't mean hiding behind a mask for fear that who you are isn't truly loveable.

It does mean that when love comes calling and crashes into your illusions or your dedication to old, outdated beliefs . . . then . . . you can feel hurt. Deeply, deeply hurt.

You can feel torn apart. Torn apart from even knowing who you are. But when you know your Soul is in charge, you feel grateful. Grateful beyond imagining.

    DEALING WITH SERIOUS ILLNESS
    By Karen Stephen, Ph.D.

    Facing the diagnosis.

I have discovered that most serious, chronic, or even life-threatening illnesses are rarely anticipated even when there is a family history that may indicate a genetic predisposition for that illness.

Women who are overly attentive to their bodies and visit their doctors too often (i.e., suffer from hypochondriasis) are as equally shocked when a serious illness is diagnosed as those who considered themselves very healthy and visit the doctor rarely.

The symptoms of minor illness such as colds, flu, allergies, bladder and vaginal infections are easily identified, widely known, and lead some women to the doctor, others to their neighborhood drugstore for over the counter remedies, and yet others to a steam kettle and chicken soup. With those illnesses, we give ourselves a week or so to recover or a few weeks if it's a stubborn infection. We willingly take antibiotics and temporary regimes to ease pain and discomfort. Within days or sometimes weeks our lives are back to normal.

    Retirement and Spirituality
    By Jan Cullinane

As adults begin to confront their mortality, and the daily rat race has faded into the background, religion and spirituality often become more front and center in their lives.

A recent Newsweek survey found that 56 percent of those aged 40 - 59 described themselves as both religious and spiritual, and this percent increased to 66 for those over 60 years of age. When asked, "How Important is Spirituality in Your Daily Life?" 63 percent of those aged 40 - 59 indicated it was very important, and 66 percent of those over 60 years of age felt it was very important.

The most common reasons for practicing their religion included . . .

    STOP!!!! Smoking, that is

For the past couple of months, we've been talking about the risk factors for heart disease. This month we'll discuss cigarette smoking. We all know the dangers of smoking, but for some, it is really hard to quit. That is especially true for women. Women have a harder time quitting than men. No one is quite sure why this happens, but it is something that psychologists are studying.

    The Evils of Smoking

Smoking is the number one preventable cause of premature death in our country. It accounts for over 400,000 deaths a year. It increases the risk of heart attack and stroke by causing plaque build-up in the arteries and inflammation. It causes a wide variety of cancers including lung cancer, which is the number one cancer killer of women surpassing breast cancer. It causes chronic lung disease. It also causes the skin to wrinkle, hair to smell and annoys the rest of the non-smoking public while increasing their risk of disease due to second-hand smoke.

Coping with the Challenges and Lessons of Aging Parents
    By Karen Baar

My book, For My Next Act . . . Women Scripting Life after Fifty (alas, now out of print) was about the way many of us reassess our lives in midlife. The book was prompted by my divorce - my husband betrayed and left me a week after I turned 50. But I also wrote about how coping with aging parents, the empty nest, health and medical concerns, and other issues prompt us to at least consider reinventing ourselves.

The common thread, I wrote, was that something reminded us of our own mortality - we finally get it we don't have forever. Back then, the chapter on aging parents was based more on my interviews with other women and with experts than on my own experience. My parents were old, but taking care of them was still only peripherally in my field of vision.

    But things have changed.

Southern Charm Lives On in Charleston
    By Carol Sorgen

It won't take you long to figure out what Rhett-yes, that Rhett-was talking about when he told Scarlett that he was going to return to Charleston, where he could find "the calm dignity life can have when it's lived by gentle folks, the genial grace of days that are gone. When I lived those days, I didn't realize the slow charm of them."

That slow, Southern charm is still pervasive in this beautiful coastal city that today is known as much for its fine dining, world-renowned arts festival and architectural preservation as it is for the fact that the nation's bloodiest war was launched following the firing on Fort Sumter in the Charleston harbor.

Charleston has received countless accolades in recent years, but perhaps the one that typifies the city best is its ranking by etiquette expert Marjabell Young Stewart as the "most mannerly city." "The people who are there have such an affection for their city," said Stewart. "It's the soft, gentle way of behaving, and they do it with such ease."

Rhett would still feel right at home.

    Don't even TRY it!
    By Janice Taylor

The most sabotaging word in the English language and therefore, in the Battle of the Bulge, is the word TRY. The implicit possibility of failure is always there. You've left yourself a loophole and somewhere in the back, or the front, of your mind you may hear a little voice saying, You might not, you will not, do you really think you are going to make it?

There are other words and phrases that you can use instead of "try" that have a positive association to them.

Eliminate the word "try" from your vocabulary; and substitute the words:

    Entrepreneurial Points of Promotion
    By Jennifer Kalita

If you build it, they will come . . . but you have to let them know it's there, provide directions, and give them an incentive to make the drive. No matter how fantastic your service, or phenomenal your product, you can't sell something to people who don't know it exists.

Some fundamental Ps of Promotion include:

    • Assess what's involved. There's an old adage that you "pay for advertising and pray for publicity." While advertising is an important part of your promotional mix, so too are public relations, marketing materials, and community outreach.
    • Think "action." Think about what promotions have caused you to act in the past.
