Brahma Kumaris - Daily inspiration at Thought for Today
![]() Greetings, Many of you may recall my excitement and fear about entering the empty nest last September as our youngest two left for college. Well, now I am faced with those same emotions as our oldest returns after his college graduation. Ah - midlife, sound familiar? Just when we get used to one way of life, it changes. The kids come, they go. The only thing that stays the same is the fact that Ross and I are always here together; for that I am grateful. See, we must stay focused on the positive! Oh, and our son has a job in his major. Lots to celebrate. In addition to the thrill of our son's graduation weekend, we've had lots of other neat things happening too. This month we partnered with Grand magazine (NABBW members who have not yet signed up for your FREE one year subscription to Grand, please email me at dots@boomerwomenspeak.com and I'll send you the link to do so). I also interviewed with a couple radio stations and bloggers and had a feature article in the Baltimore Sun. What does this mean for members of the NABBW? More benefits and more traffic to the sites. Members who have published articles get more visibility and members who advertise do the same. One of our associates even signed with a literary agent by having her articles posted at www.nabbw.com. The results of our member survey shared that boomer women are interested in more educational opportunities. We've taken that call to heart and will soon launch the Boomer Women's Resource Center: Expanding Our Minds - Enriching Our Worlds - Reinventing Our Lives. We'll offer CDs, PDFs and Audio Files for all topics boomer women at reasonable prices. Please watch your email for this exciting launch. Now's the time to sit back, grab your favorite drink, and get in the know by reading about all things boomer women. We are happy to announce that when searching "baby boomer women" online, www.BoomerWomenSpeak.com is ranked first on Google, and www.nabbw.com is ranked first on Yahoo. Why not advertise with us? Email me at advertising@boomerwomenspeak.com for advertising rates. Onward with grace, Dotsie dots@nabbw.com Leigh Anne Jasheway-Bryant, "The Accidental Comic," and host of the popular radio show, "Women Under the Influence of Laughter" www.kopt.com/ interviewed Dotsie on her April 21 show. Mark Miller of www.50plusdigital.com/blog recently interviewed Dotsie about NABBW and BWS and posted the article on his blog. Raven Blair Davis www.womenpower-radio.com/, interviewed Dotsie and they discussed, "Where We've Been, Where We Are and Where We're Going." Founder Dotsie Bregel was interviewed by journalist Linell Smith in the Baltimore Sun in their April 29 issue. Founder Dotsie Bregel continues to blog at:

MEMBER COLUMNS FINAL 5 PITFALLS TO AVOID WHEN DISCUSSING THORNY TOPICS WITH YOUR AGING LOVED ONE By Barbara E. Friesner ![]() PITFALL #1)Thinking there is only 1 solution (Yours!) Some of the reasons family members may think there is only 1 solution (theirs!) is because they only know about 1 solution - perhaps it's a solution that a friend used or they read about. Or maybe because basically it's an "ok solution" and since they didn't plan ahead, there's no time to come up with a different one or others. Or perhaps because they were thinking only in terms of their needs such as having their loved one move into an assisted living because it just solves everything. Or maybe it's a matter of ego - thinking their solution is right because it's their solution. Think out of the box and be creative. Continue reading at this link: http://www.nabbw.com/columns/barbarafriesner.html Menopause and Yeast Infections By Cathy Taylor ![]() Baths, excess moisture in the vagina, or damp or tight clothes may lead to yeast infections. The signs of yeast infection during menopause, as well as otherwise, are: inflammation, continued itching and irritation, pain during intercourse, frequent urination, and a thick, white discharge from your vagina. With the drop of estrogen levels during menopause, the walls of your vagina become thinner and weak. During intercourse, the walls become irritated, leaving tiny scars and scratches, enabling bacteria to thrive. Concentrate on targeting people in a specific niche market to attract your ideal clients- those people who you serve well and who you are most alike. Think about what types of people you best identify with and what life experiences, interests, hobbies, and roles you might share with them. Then consider whether they are people you'll want to work with in the long term. After years of practicing saying no, I'm loving saying yes. The phrase "the year of yes" comes from a book of the same title by Idaho native and aspiring playwright Maria Dahvana Headley. Feeling like she's "dated and then hated every man in Manhattan," Headley resolves to stop being so picky and say yes to anyone (within reason) who asks her out on a date. No drunks, druggies, violent types, or cheating husbands. Everyone else gets a nod. Headley's first date is with her building's Puerto Rican maintenance man, who shows up to fix her toilet and ends up asking her out. The second is with a 40-year old classmate who speaks mostly Polish. Continue reading at this link: http://www.nabbw.com/columns/ prillboyle.html Dangling Carrots Wilt By Nan S. Russell ![]() Working with a client on a consulting engagement recently, the issue came up again and again, "How can I motivate my employees?" My answer wasn't the quick-fix the client wanted. "You can't," I said. "But what you can do is more powerful and sustaining. If you want motivated employees, create an environment where people can be self-motivated." You see, efforts to rouse, stimulate or encourage behavior are short-lived. That's not to say expectations, incentives, pay for performance or fear of consequences don't work to improve results for a time. They do. But, carrot-and-stick approaches don't solve the problems that reduce motivation, initiative and engagement. So results are often fleeting. By Georgia Richardson ![]() Once the nest was empty, I created my own life and carried on with only a smidgen of "grief" showing. I wrote, I stayed up late and ate foods that were bad for me, and changed channels on the TV over and over, simply because I could. I ran around the house without a bra. Ah, the good life. Righttttt. So much for the first day. The next day, I cried. All day. Gossip and entertainment shows abound. Everyday people vie for the opportunity to interview, dance with, or touch a famous person. Magazines employ large teams of writers to report on the latest makeup tips, clothing styles, and private lives of the celebrities. Even in Christian circles, we have a few people who some might be consider 'stars' - pastors of mega- churches, televangelists, and best selling authors. Even the disciples felt the need for the spotlight. They debated who would be the greatest in the Kingdom. We read the account in Luke 9:46-48, "An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by his side and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For he who is least among you all is the one who is great." I don't use "run" when I mean "dash". I search for "periwinkle" instead of merely typing "purple". But my wordsmith Olympics have come to a screeching halt lately as I try to come up with something to say to help my sister deal with the loss of her only daughter. And even if I put myself through a thesaurus-type marathon of a lifetime, the problem on the computer print-out in my hands doesn't come close to eliminating the thud in my gut every time I remember that Sarah is gone. "Remember where you came from." "Think you're too good for us?" "People like us don't go to places like that." That list of hold-backs could go on and on. And every one of us-including you- has been subjected to some form of commandment to NOT break out beyond where you came from, to not leave your "station" in order to be truly fabulous. Whether it came from a demanding and controlling parent, a terrified and anxious teacher, an abusive coach, or any number of relatives, romantic partners, or so-called friends who didn't know any better . . . the damage happened anyway. And what's the damage . . . ? Unless, of course, they have just extricated themselves from an abusive situation; in which case, they are breathing a momentary sigh of relief. But in the long run, most women consider singleness, whether widowed, divorced, never married, or simply flying solo as a life status filled with loneliness, longing, discrimination (in a coupled world), extra chores, and a sense of unfulfillment. Yes, there are a scattering of freedoms from having to consider another person's point of view or demands or desires, but these don't seem to counterbalance the pain. To understand how singleness might be a gift and what psychological and spiritual tools we will need to see it as such, let's start with the other gifts we have been given in life. By Jan Cullinane ![]() There are several possibilities-you can receive a lump sum, monthly payments, a line of credit, or some combination of these options. The homeowner retains ownership of the home during the reverse mortgage period. Since these types of mortgages can be complex and involve fees, you need to be comfortable with how the costs stack up against how much you will receive in loan advances and how much equity will remain at the end of the reverse mortgage period. There are several types of reverse mortgages, but the only kind insured by the federal government are the home equity conversion mortgages (HECMs). Cholesterol is found in every cell of the body. It is important for building hormones. When there is too much cholesterol in the body it can deposit in blood vessels and cause inflammation. Eventually it can cause a build up of plaque with narrowing and eventually completely clog the vessels. This can result in a stroke or a heart attack. Cholesterol is what is called a lipoprotein. It is one of many that can cause these problems. Continue reading at this link: http://www.nabbw.com/columns/robinmiller.html
