FEATURED MEMBER Margaret May Damen, CFP, CLU, ChFC, CDFA President and Founder The Institute For Women and Wealth, Inc. www.instituteforwomenandwealth.org I was blessed to grow up in a household with two strong, determined and loving women, my mother Lillian and my grandmother, Mary. Both lived healthy lives to age 94 and both were astute business owners and devoted community leaders. Their constant answer to my never-ending question of how did they do it all was a W. Clement Stone quote, “It’s not your aptitude but your attitude that gets you to your altitude.” Lillian and Mary’s mantra served me well through the perils of my 40-year career as an educator, financial planner, fundraiser and philanthropic consultant/coach that began at Boston University and included 18-years as a Senior Financial Advisor with American Express Financial Advisors. This third generation mantra sustained me and my entrepreneurial spirit in 2000 when I established my Institute For Women and Wealth in Palm City, Florida. I had searched the country and the internet to find a forum where economically secure women could find the holistic advice, workshops and services to express their “attitude of gratitude” for the blessings of the time, talent and treasures in their life. A place where women could become confident to “unlock the wealth within” that would reconnect their values and virtues, live a purposeful life and leave a meaningful legacy. The fabulous and rewarding feedback from the women who were empowered to fulfill their abundant wealth legacy after attending my lectures, workshops, seminars and retreats in the past six years throughout the country has inspired me to write my current book, “Torchbearers For Virtuous Philanthropy: Boom-Generation Women’s Destiny.” The book in part describes how our current philanthropic “attitude of gratitude” has evolved by the distillation of our values through the forty year journey from the “consciousness revolution” to what I now call the current “compassionate resolution” as we act out the essence of our values in philanthropic leadership roles to make the world a better place for the greater good of society. The book will be published this summer. Meanwhile I will be speaking in Dallas in March, Houston in May and Atlanta in June. Would love to meet you and share your “attitude of gratitude” stories. Sometimes deep, sometimes poignant, the reader is led down many paths as she explores her new life. Not for the faint hearted; Aphrodite in Jeans is a no-holds-barred-in-your-face-reality read; written with unflinching courage on topics important to us all; relationships, parenting, death, children and midlife. Katherine openly shares her experiences as she tackles life head on. The Queen of My Self: Stepping into Sovereignty in Midlife www.thequeenofmyself.com By Donna Henes ![]() Reviewed by by Lynn Tolson, author of Beyond the Tears: A True Survivor’s Story.www.beyondthetears.com Donna Henes states that she has thirty years experience as an “urban shaman and contemporary ceremonialist” and that she was a “proud member of the pioneering Sixties Generation.” When she found herself lacking in role models to mentor her through middle age, Henes chose to use her own leadership abilities. She developed “The Queen” image for herself and her cohorts. In doing so, she created not only a royal attitude, but also a lifestyle guide. Henes has established an enriching experiential “how-to” for stepping into middle age with aplomb. Henes uses the classic “Queen” as a continuous theme throughout the book. Each of the eight chapters has a heading befitting the regal premise, plus a sub-heading of real world methods toward fulfillment. For example, Chapter 5 is titled “The Queen and I” with a sub-title of “Embracing Her Majesty.” The readers are encouraged to “design our own roles and ideals, compose the scripts, and author the sagas of our own futures.” The author presents personal experience and case studies of women who have successfully reinvented themselves in middle age; readers can easily relate to these examples. Each chapter offers multiple suggestions helping readers identify their own wishes and wants. If one style of story telling is not suitable for a specific reader, another style for the same subject is sure to meet the reader’s needs. Henes even uses her own poetry to get the point of self-improvement across to the reader. The result is a book that is well- crafted, engaging, and entertaining. There are also practical applications within the context of The Queen and with all that the author offers, Queen of My Self is a gift that keeps on giving. Ladies, put on your gem-studded tiaras! You are in for a great read from a thoughtful and thought-provoking author who is for and about a well- lived middle-aged life. ![]() The Art of Table Dancing Escapades of an Irreverent Woman by DC Stanfa, Professional Speaker and Writer www.dcstanfa.com Reviewed by Patti Trapp, www.pattiswriting.com DC Stanfa is an amazing author who pours humor and the importance of self-esteem into her writing. This compilation of true stories covers childhood; questioning authority and religion, through adulthood; with all its pain and pleasure, dating and rejection, angst and discovery. It is well written, enjoyable and is at times painfully honest. The Art of Table Dancing is about the transformation from ugly duckling to beautiful womanhood—inside and out. DC openly shares learning to accept herself, love herself and to trust her own instincts; things we all wrestle with. By reading about her own struggles through a humorous lens we can begin to laugh (a little) about our own life tales; the ones we want to celebrate and the ones we still shudder over. This is one book you will definitely enjoy reading!

MEMBER COLUMNS WHAT’S THE BEST THAT COULD HAPPEN By Barbara E. Friesner ![]() On the other hand, how many times have you feared the worst about, say for example, an eldercare issue. Sure you know it’s a problem. You see all the tell-tale signs of trouble – the car accidents (or near misses); health problems not being addressed; bills not being paid; increasing forgetfulness; inability to take care of themselves in their home. You know you should do something but because of the fear, you put off addressing the issue for weeks, months, or even years. You hope it will get better or go away but it gets predictably worse. Then the crisis hits and suddenly there are fewer and fewer options and it spirals out of control. Now it is, in fact, the worst that could happen. So what can you do to avoid the inevitable ‘what if’s?’; ‘if only’s’; or ‘shoulda-coulda-woulda’s’? Acne is linked with a menopausal woman taking HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) treatment. The HRT has progestin in the treatment and can cause the skin to breakout in a rash or acne, if excessive androgen is produced. However, treatment is possible through a form of Vitamin A, called retinaic acid. With no plan in place, and little savings to help them stay afloat, nest eggs are soon depleted and woeful regrets pile up. At least for today, you can say you were able to carve out a few minutes for yourself. That means, even if the rest of the day goes south, you were able to create a pocket of pure joy for yourself. If you continue on this path from this day forward, in the end, hopefully, you should be able to look back at your life and consider that it was a happy one. Okay, okay, I’m not THAT much of a simpleton! I realize it takes more than a few minutes a day to your self in order to achieve such a lofty goal. But this kind of conscious effort in several areas of your life is destined to make a tangible difference in your level of happiness. By Prill Boyle ![]() I first met Washington in October of 2003 on a United Airlines flight from Indianapolis to San Francisco. Wearing a black turtleneck and carrying a tenor sax, he stood out from the throng of business travelers and Midwestern moms. He looked intelligent and intense in a gentle sort of way, and I thought to myself, I hope that man sits next to me. And to my delight, he did. As soon as we settled into our seats, we began talking and didn’t stop until the plane landed. We chatted about politics, philosophy, and music. I told him about the book I was writing on late bloomers; he told me about his own midlife career change. In May of 2005 I traveled to Indianapolis to interview him in depth. One of these days I might write a Defying Gravity sequel and tell the whole story, but for now, here’s an abbreviated version: Continue reading at this link: http://www.nabbw.com/columns/ prillboyle.html ABOUT THOSE WORDS By Nan S. All week long, we practiced our cheers and choreographed our steps. At the end of the competition, the best squad won a trophy. Another competition went on simultaneously. Whoever won that one received the coveted ‘Spirit Stick.” After all, what would any self-respecting cheerleader be without that school spirit? The competition escalated as we neared the final ceremony. Many of the girls thrived on the tension. Not me. I turned into a nervous wreck. I’m the type of person who throws in her cards when the competition heats up, or backs off when confronted with an overzealous opponent. My stomach quivers at the thought of such rivalry. Yep, you read that right. Love. That’s all it takes to build the business of your dreams. Now before you dismiss me as being way to woo-woo to take seriously, let me explain myself. For the last week I’ve been sick in bed with bronchitis . . . and so I’ve been doing a lot of thinking. When I look at the really profitable months for my business last year, they all had one simple thing in common – my site was a hub of generous energy. There were free teleclasses going on; I was personally responding to lots of emails; I was posting like mad on my blog and my essays were some of the best I’d written. For those who would rather hit the books than hit a golf ball, it’s worth consideration. For many baby boomers, living in an academic community provides the vitality of college life without the hefty tuition. Colleges are responding to this trend with lifelong learning opportunities for retirees, such as the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement in Asheville, and the almost 100 peer-driven Osher Learning Institutes at various college campuses nationwide.
