NABBW Newsletter May 2006
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-- FOR NABBW MEMBERS ONLY, FEATURED MEMBER AND FEATURED ASSOCIATE
-- MONTHLY COLUMNS AND MEMBER NEWS
-- IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Greetings!
Become a student of change. It is the only thing that will remain constant. -- Anthony D'Angelo
I had to laugh when I came across this quote because we are in the middle of more changes at NABBW and www.BoomerWomenSpeak.com. Our biggest change begins with this newsletter. We will no longer produce a bi-monthly BWS newsletter and a monthly NABBW newsletter. Beginning today, Boomer Womens’ World will be our only publication and it will include all things baby boomer women. You will find our stories, learn about products, books, vacations, coaching, and many services that benefit midlife women. You will also be enriched by educational columns concerning menopause, empty nest, retirement, legal advice, travel, caring for aging parents, etc.
Boomer Womens' World will be emailed the 15th of every month and will include information from NABBW members only. We will promote NABBW members only. Members are encouraged to submit their Members Only information before the 5th of every month. We are happy to include you in every newsletter. All we ask is that you change your copy monthly. Be sure to include your Web site link if you have one.
I am looking for women to interview concerning all baby boomer women issues for our monthly teleseminars. Please let me know if you have a topic of interest.
Thanks to everyone who filled out the NABBW survey. I am in the process of sorting through them. There were many excellent ideas for future seminars. Next month I hope to share teleseminar topics for June, July and August. And don’t worry if you can’t listen in. They will all be recorded and available through the site.
I have my finger on the pulse of baby boomer women and my promise is to keep you in the know. Please notify me if there is a topic you would like to see covered. Enjoy this issue. The articles are fantastic.
Those of you who live in the Chicago area, please look for an article about BWS and NABBW in Satisfaction magazine, www.satisfactionmag.com during May.
Onward with grace,
Dotsie
Donna Shepherd
http://www.donnashepherd.com
Donna J. Shepherd, Children's/Inspirational Writer:
In January 2003, while surfing the web, Donna came across Just Between Us, a Web site “for women with a heart for ministry.” This publication seemed tailored for her, a pastor’s wife. Just for fun and with no previous writing experience, she clicked on the Writers’ Guidelines and saw the upcoming theme – Turning Fear into Faith. Knowing the subject well, she wrote the required 1,200 words, and with one click and sent it off into cyber-space.
It seemed nothing short of miraculous when a month later she received a letter from the editor of Just Between Us requesting her manuscript for publication. Her first submission was her first acceptance.
Since that time, Donna’s received her share of rejections, but has had devotionals, columns, and poetry published many times on websites, in magazines and included in several anthologies. She pens a monthly column for The Dabbling Mum and the NABBW. Her writing appears in Daily Grace for Women, Devotional Reflections to Nourish Your Soul, (Honor Books, April 2005) and in the upcoming devotional, Anytime Prayers for Everyday Moms (Warner Faith, November 2006). She is also the author of a children's picture book, Topsy Turvy Land (Hidden Pictures Publishing, July 2005).
Each year presents new, exciting possibilities. Recently she has spoken and sung at churches and women’s conferences, and begun teaching at writers’ conferences.
Donna desires that her children’s writing would impart joy, and her devotionals teach, inspire and encourage the reader. Devotionals consist of few words, so each word must count. Focusing on one theme, she leaves the reader with a summary, challenge, or new perspective. To read more by Donna, visit Devotionals by Donna: http:// www.donnashepherd.com.
Marcia Reynolds
Author of Outsmart Your Brain! How to Make Success Feel Easy
www.OutsmartYourBrain.com
Most baby-boomer women have a positive habit of consuming self-help information. We love to share what we have learned from the fascinating best seller we just read, the engaging seminar we attended and the rich website we just found. Yet, reading, listening and talking about good ideas is not enough. There is a difference between choice and change. Although we have good intentions, our busy lives and unspoken fears often keep us from creating the life we wish we could lead.
Marcia Reynolds has been teaching classes in communications and personal effectiveness for over 25 years. Frustrated by seeing most of what she taught forgotten by participants within 48 hours, she set out to find out why. Her quest led her to the field of emotional intelligence. She became passionate about the workings of the brain.
Emotions were never discussed as a part of her studies in Adult Learning Psychology. Yet clearly, when emotions take over, logic is lost. In fact, most of our decisions are made on emotional reactions even when we think we have "thought things through."
To learn more, Marcia began her doctoral studies in psychology with a focus on the neurosciences and how we can truly change our thinking. Her second book, Outsmart Your Brain!, is intended to help people understand how their brains work so they can harness the processes and consciously change how they feel and act. She also sends out a Brain Tip every month to subscribers on her website. Without understanding how our brains work, we are victims of our reactions. When we understand, we can master our destiny by choosing our actions.
Marcia now teaches emotional intelligence classes around the world. And students report seeing lasting behavioral change and effective results. And although she travels frequently, she chooses to live where she was born, in Phoenix, Arizona.
Helping Your Parents Get Rid of "Stuff"
By Barbara Friesner
Because of a crisis, my sisters and I had to move our mother into an assisted living which also meant emptying out her home. Unfortunately, as almost always happens when there’s a crisis, the timing couldn’t have been worse and, because of our work schedules, we had 1 week in which to do it!! While my parents were the most organized people you could imagine and my sister and I worked well together, one week wasn’t nearly enough time to sort through the “stuff” my parents had accumulated throughout their 50 years of marriage and certainly not enough to make good decisions about what to keep and what to get rid of. That was almost 7 years ago and to this day, I wonder what family “treasures” were lost in the rush.
A Home for the Soul
By Regina Leeds
How would you like to play a little game with me? Walk outside your home, condo or apartment and take a stroll around the block. Now enter through the front door as if you have never been in this home before. What are some of the things you know instantly about the occupants of this house? My home reveals, for example, that I have pets. You simply can’t miss my Golden Retriever’s toys scattered about the floor - or my cranky cockatiel’s seeds sprayed everywhere.
If you think about it, every time you go to see a movie or watch a play or turn on the TV, you know a great deal about the characters before anyone says a word just by looking at their environments. You may want to work with a decorator or even a talented family member to help you make a specific visual statement in your home. I would urge you to take this work one step further: be sure your home is organized, including all of the hidden areas. I can’t tell you how many homes I see with perfect ‘public rooms’ and a war zone in the every closet and cupboard.
The Dark Side of Friendship
By Karen Baar
Last month, I wrote about the joys of friendships with women. Unfortunately, things aren’t always so sweet. In midlife, just as we come to terms with our parents, our spouses, our careers and our children, we may also sort through friendships, identifying our most enduring friends and pulling away from others.
This happens for a variety of reasons. As we get older, our friendships are no longer based on the same things. When our children are little, many of our friendships come through them – we meet women at childcare, or through the kids’ schools; because we share so much in our daily lives, we feel as if we’re on the same page. Once the kids are gone, however, what originally made us so close may be lost, and we drift apart.
Walking Through Fear
By Prill Boyle
We’re all afraid.
If we’re not anxious about getting senile or going broke, we’re worried that our children will start using drugs or that we’ll end up as one-hit wonders. It doesn’t matter how accomplished, brilliant and beautiful we consider ourselves. Fear comes with the territory of being human. And the better we are at navigating through it, the more comfortable we feel in our skins and surroundings.
Facing fear also goes hand-in-hand with realizing our dreams.
Retirement and the Single Woman
By Jan Cullinane
Are there unique factors to consider if you’re a single, female retiree? The answer is yes. Even if you’re part of a couple now, remember that divorce, death, or the break-up with a significant other can change your status. Since women live an average of seven years longer than men, your chances of being single at some point are considerable. So, let’s take a look at some areas you may want to think about if you’re single now, or may be single in the future:
Considerations Involved in the Sale of a Business
By Patricia McHugh Lambert
Business owners find themselves pondering a sale of their business for many reasons. Sometimes, it is because they really had not considered or developed a secession plan and, as they near retirement, a sale of the business can be a good and profitable option. In other cases, a secession plan has been developed, but just doesn’t work out. For instance, the owner’s children or other principals of the business decide they wish to pursue a different career. Sales of businesses are also contemplated as a result of bids for the business from a competitor or larger company.
The IT Factor
By Nan S. Russell
American Idol judge, Simon Cowell, periodically remarks about the "it" factor when assessing contestants. It seems to be one of those nebulous, undefined and subjective attributes one either has or doesn't have. And it falls into the category of you- know-it-when-you-see-it. He's right. You do know it when you see it and that's true in the workplace, too.
Some people call it passion. And while that's part of it, it goes beyond the intense driving focus associated with passion.
The More Creative Home Office
By Suzanne Falter-Barns
A few years back I wrote here about Kathryn Weber, whose beautiful ezine, The Red Lotus Letter, is one of the top Feng Shui ezines out there. (Feng Shui is the Chinese art of using interior decoration to create an auspicious life.) It’s a great mix of the practical and the mysterious. To that end, Kathryn has shared with us some tips on how to set up a more creative office, using Feng Shui concepts. (Fellow skeptics, please stay open and read on. You may find some surprises here.)
Soggy Slippers and All
By Julie Clark Robinson
“An optimist is the human personification of spring.” -Susan J. Bissonette
Every day I wake up a little more giddy than the day before. Steaming cup of coffee in hand, I challenge my slippers to take on the dew and head out the door to see, literally, what’s new. I give a nod of acceptance that the daffodils – whose emergence a few weeks back felt more glorious to me than any 4th of July fireworks show – are on their way out.
I wonder if my neighbors think I’m nuts. “Of course they do,” I tell myself. We’re the family who moved in, during an ice storm, just ten days before Christmas. We’re the family with a giant Santa on the porch before the refrigerator was delivered. We pluck worms off the driveway after the rain and rush them inside (to feed the lizards). They don’t even know my name yet, but they’ve undoubtedly noticed that I trail behind my kids en route to the bus stop wearing soggy slippers. They know that several times a day I meander around my yard inspecting tiny buds with all the geeky intensity of the Professor on “Gilligan’s Island.” Neighbors know all.
The Pleasures of Providence
By Carol Sorgen
When you think of Rhode Island, the first thing that may come to mind is the colonial charm of its island town of Newport. But if you haven’t been to the capital city of Providence, you’re missing out on a city that has enough big-city attractions to keep any urbanite happy, but with the small-town feel that makes you instantly feel right at home.
I’ve been to Providence several times and I never fail to be won over by the friendliness of its residents, the top-notch caliber of its thriving arts scene—from galleries to museums to theater—to its first-rate restaurants—and just about all within walking distance from any downtown hotel.
Busy As Bees
By Donna Shepherd
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ. – Ephesians 1:7-9 niv
As children, my brother, sister, and I looked forward to visiting our grandmother during the sweltering days of summer. Dad would drive along the winding gravel roads, with me getting sicker by the moment, until we finally came to her small house, deep in the hills of Kentucky.
Every evening she’d cook a big supper over the wood stove. We ate green beans fresh out of the garden, chicken, cornbread, and crispy fried potatoes – browned in the cast iron skillet.
