FEBRUARY TELESEMINAR
Topic: "Gender Equality in the Workforce has Finally
Arrived - or has it?"
Attorneys Patricia McHugh Lambert, an expert in
Women's Law issues, and Rochelle Eisenberg held a fantastic
teleseminar about gender equality in the 21st century. They
shared lots of insight into women in the work force today, in

MARCH TELESEMINAR
Topic: "Important Financial Decisions and Issues Facing
Women at Midlife" March 15, 2006 at 7:00 pm EST
The presentation is a "forward thinking" format. Financial
facts specific to women will be addressed. Life expectancy,
social security benefits, pension considerations, health care
issues, personal saving strategies, wills, power of attorney,
etc.
Jennifer will go over the need for women to understand how
to begin planning as we will most likely have a longer post
retirement period and are more likely to have long term care
needs. The odds are also in our favor of becoming the
primary financial decision makers. Are you prepared to stay
on top of a changing environment? Are you forming a
network of qualified professionals to assist you? Listen and
learn! http://fa.smithbarney.com/jennifercampion/

FEATURED ASSOCIATE
Regina Leeds
http://www.reginaleeds.com
I grew up in Brooklyn, New York at a time when
TV was just catching fire. My parents didn't have an Ozzie &
Harriet type marriage, however, I noticed that certain
television programs dissolved their differences and filled our
home with something magical: the sound of laughter. From the
age of 5, the only thing I wanted to do with my life was be an
actress. If I could bring that gift of laughter to others, I figured
my life would be worthwhile. Needless to say my Depression
era parents were less than ecstatic. If I didn't want to be a
doctor or a lawyer, they at least wanted me to be a writer.
This was an acceptable form of the arts to them. Acting was
on a rung or two below prostitution and a life of crime.
Flash forward in time and the first part of my life was indeed
devoted to acting. While I was in show business, I had like all
journeyman actors, a lot of time on my hands. I went into
therapy to better understand myself and I hoped become a
better actor. I also found myself leaving the Catholic ways of
my childhood and embracing the spiritual philosophies of the
East. I think it's best my parents didn't live to hear me say I
am a yogi with a guru. It would have sent them over the edge.
Ironically, all of this time I was preparing for what has become
my life's work: organizing and writing about it. Therapy
enabled me to get into people’s heads and find the root causes
of their chaos. Acting enables me to lead seminars and do TV
without a moment of discomfort or fear. And writing about my
work has not only afforded me the opportunity to reach a wider
audience, I am at last doing something that would have made
mom and dad proud!
"The Zen of Organizing: Creating Order and Peace in
Your Home, Career and Life" (Alpha Books) was my
first book and a basic primer for anyone seeking to learn how
to get organized and stay that way. "Zen"
was the basis for a television special on the Fine Living cable
network and my current work as a regular contributor to Lime
Radio on Sirius Satellite channel 114 and Lime.com.
My second book "Sharing a Place Without Losing Your
Space: a Couples Guide to Blending Homes, Lives and
Clutter" (Alpha books) is especially helpful to
boomers who may be marrying again and bringing to the new
home the 'stuff' of a lifetime! Last month I wrote about my
quest to leave behind the physical possessions I inherited from
my parents. I can only imagine what they, 'the King and Queen
of off white rooms' would say if they saw my red kitchen and
terra cotta bedroom.

FEATURED MEMBER
Carol Bradley Bursack
www.mindingourelders.com
For over twenty years, author/columnist/speaker
Carol Bradley Bursack cared for a neighbor and six elderly
family members. Her neighbor, Joe, was totally deaf, newly
widowed and had only one adult child – more than a thousand
miles away. Carol and Joe adopted each other, and Carol cared
for Joe through the last five years of his life. Meanwhile her
childless aunt and uncle needed care, and then her dad had
brain surgery, which sent him into instant dementia. Carol’s in-
laws became frail and needed help and her mother followed.
Through the years of caregiving and deaths, Carol came to
know professionals in the elder care field, as well as many
family caregivers. She became an avid student of the subject
as she discovered she was just one of the 44 million people
taking care of another adult. It was the caregivers themselves
who inspired and encouraged Carol to write “Minding Our
Elders: Caregivers Share Their Personal Stories” and to
set up her Web site at www.mindingourelders.com. The site
includes a national caregiver chat and many helpful links,
agencies and books.
Carol is an elder care columnist with a weekly column in the
Sunday edition of The Forum, flagship newspaper of
Forum Communications Company. She is also a Toastmasters
trained public speaker. As a speaker, Carol educates
professionals about ways they can better help caregivers. She
works on employers to support their caregiving employees.
Thirty percent of caregivers die before those they care for.
Through her talks, Carol reminds caregivers that they, too,
need care so they don’t become a statistic. She reminds them
they need to seek caregiving help and the support of other
caregivers; that it’s okay to share the load and that their best
is good enough. Carol talks of the grieving process – how it
starts as we witness the decline of our loved ones and often
lasts for years as we care for our frail elders.
Contact Carol by going to www.mindingourelders.com. She can
answer your questions or point you to someone who can. Carol
offers personal support and you can access her column from
the site. “Minding Our Elders: Caregivers Share Their
Personal Stories” is a portable support group that can be
ordered from www.mindingourelders.com, as well.

Travel Light
By Regina Leeds
Several years ago I was scheduled to teach a class at a spa
just outside New York City. A van was to pick me and the other
weekend speaker up on a street corner on the Upper East Side
of Manhattan. While I was waiting, I noticed a lady getting out
of a taxi hauling one of the biggest suitcases I had ever seen.
In addition, she had two large weekender bags. She looked at
me standing there with one small bag and we burst out
laughing. “I guess I brought too much,” she said. It was the
start of a great weekend and a long friendship.
March is a great time to start planning your summer getaway.
Whether it’s a weekend or a multi week vacation, I hope you
will consider planning your wardrobe carefully so that you don’t
wind up hauling a lot of useless possessions around with you.
Vacations are meant to restore our Souls, not exhaust the body
that carries that Soul through the world!

The Old Switcheroo
By Julie Clark Robinson
“Without change, something sleeps inside us, and seldom
awakens.”
-Frank Herbert
A person expects it to some degree, whether they are aware of
it or not. You squeeze through the aisle -- trying not to bonk
anyone in the head with your carry-on –mumble words of
appreciation to the flight attendants, and step down the ramp
into another city’s version of an airport. Change is literally in
the air, albeit institutional and somewhat stuffy. You pick up
your pace and follow the overhead signs to your final
destination.
But when the month is March and you’ve traveled from
Cleveland to Palm Springs, you get more than the usual blur of
people who look somehow different from the bundled up, meat
and potatoes bunch perched in the waiting area at your
departure gate. When it’s March and you step into an open-air
desert Mecca, change smacks you in the face. And if you’re like
me, you snap to attention and lap it up.

In Sickness and In Health
By Donna Shepherd
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree,
that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by
whose stripes ye were healed." – 1 Peter 2:24
I’m one of the healthiest people I know. I try to maintain a
positive outlook on life, and thank God every day for my
health.
Recently a nasty bug invaded my body and wreaked havoc.
After three long days, I feel better and almost back to my old
self. No further comment on the ‘old.’

Dealing With Your Depression
By Karen Stephen, Ph.D.
COLUMN FOUR: DECIDING IF YOU NEED MEDICATION
Let me begin by reminding you that I am a psychologist and,
therefore, do not prescribe medications. Medications are
prescribed only by MDs, either psychiatrists or general
practitioners. My knowledge of medication management comes
from 37 years of being in practice and working closely with the
psychiatrists or other MDs who have prescribed medications for
my patients.
In this month’s column I want to give you some general advice
to help you decide whether you might need to be medicated for
your depression.

The Most Important Commitment
You Can Make
By Nan S. Russell
Commitments. Commitments. Commitments. They fill our
days, our heads and our lives. Most of us are in the
commitment business. Of course, that's not what we call it. At
work, we're making commitments to customers, suppliers,
bosses, coworkers and staff. At home, we're making
commitments to family, friends, neighbors, community and
organizations. Not to mention commitments to pay taxes,
credit card bills, mortgages and car loans.
Commitments become our drivers. Like the proverbial hamster
wheel, we can't stop the stress, or the time demands we
obligate ourselves to, because of commitments. We work so
we can meet our professional, personal and financial ones. We
work so we can do the others things in our lives we want to do.
We work to get the good review, the promotion, the raise or
the new job so we can get the house or the car or the next big
thing.

Welcome to the Sandwich
Generation
By Barbara Friesner
First we couldn’t have any.
Then we could have it all.
Then we realized we didn’t want it all.
So how come we’re still doing it all – and feeling guilty about it
to boot!?
Welcome to the “Sandwich Generation”!
So much has been written lately about the “Sandwich
Generation” – those caring for both their children and their
aging parents. It’s an important subject, especially because,
while Baby Boomer men are also members of the sandwich
generation, the overwhelming impact is on Baby Boomer
women.
Why are women bearing the brunt of eldercare?

Learning to Open Your Heart
By Suzanne Falter-Barns
Five years ago a psychic in Key West, FL told me something I’m
only just now beginning to understand. As I sat there in front of
her, in a darkened room all full of incense, she intoned: “You’ll
have the success you want, Suzanne - but only when you open
your heart.” I wasn’t sure what this meant, exactly, but I did
what any good self-help devotee would do. I set out to crack
the code on what ‘opening your heart’ meant.
My first stop was the aromatherapy store, where I spent a
good hour sniffing this and that until I’d whipped up my own
little brew designed to split open a congested heart chakra.
(Mind you, I had no idea what I was doing, but this did seem
like the place to start.) Then I headed over to my friend, Mary,
the Oriental Medicine Woman. Mary listened to me quite
seriously when I requested she set lots of needles that would
open my heart. After the third treatment, she gingerly asked
how it was going. “I don’t know,” I replied. “Well, what would
‘opening your heart’ be like?” she asked. Again, I could not
answer. Meanwhile, a nightly application of my heart chakra oil
was giving me nothing but a greasy, rose-scented chest.

"Myth-conceptions" (Part Five):
Life Narrows at Midlife
By Karen Baar
This month, I’m finishing my series of columns on the “myth-
conceptions” about baby boomer women that I discovered while
writing my book. The one I’m writing about is one of the most
damaging – it’s the idea that midlife is bound to be a negative
time for women, a time when everything starts to run downhill.
There’s a puzzling disconnect in our culture. Many of us fear
getting older and approach “middle age” with a feeling of
dread. No wonder! This is a time in our lives often
characterized as a period of crisis and loss, including fading
beauty, husbands who leave, menopause, mastectomies and
other health problems, aging parents, empty nests, and age
discrimination in the workplace. What’s more, we live in a
culture that reinforces negative views about aging, especially
when it comes to women. As Goldie Hawn’s character in The
First Wives’ Club said: “There are only three ages of women in
Hollywood: babe, district attorney, and Driving Miss Daisy.” No
wonder we fear ending up sour, unattractive, lonely, ailing, and
poor.

The New Retirement
Trying a Place for “Fit”
By Jan Cullinane
What if you’ve decided you’re among the 50 percent of
Boomers who say they are planning to relocate after they
retire, and, after doing some investigating, you’ve narrowed
your list of locations to several possibilities. Of course, there
really is no perfect place, but there are likely many locations
that will mesh with your priorities. Remember, too, that moving
doesn’t have to be a permanent decision – you may decide you
want to live in a place for several years, and then relocate
again.
Now, assuming you’ve done your homework and narrowed your
list to several good possibilities, here are some ideas to “try
them on” for fit:

The Blessing of Being Different
By Judith Sherven, Ph.D. & James Sniechowski, Ph.D.
We didn't get married eighteen years ago. Jim had been
married twice before and this was Judith's first walk down the
aisle. While we loved each other in ways we couldn't even
explain, we also knew that our differences were a major
challenge.
Each of us is opinionated, head strong, known to get defensive,
and more often than we'd like to have admitted back when we
were first married, downright stubborn. So our irritation and
anger at each other over the big and little differences that
cropped up most every day had to be dealt with or we would
be one of those couples claiming "irreconcilable differences" in
divorce court. And that, we agreed, was out of the question.
