Greetings to our friends at NABBW!

Raised self-aware of our power and potential, our generation of women is not a segment of the population that accepts marginalization as an option. Several years ago, as both a marketer and a Baby Boomer woman, I refused to believe that men 18-34 years old were the default “most desirable” consumer segment of choice. Swimming against the mainstream advertising and media tide, I founded Imago Creative as the only firm in the country exclusively dedicated to helping companies recognize and tap into the economic powerhouse that our generation of women represents.

It was a risk. But for all our sakes, I am pleased to tell you that the mission is succeeding, and that the days of women 40+ being invisible to marketers are numbered. The Imago website tells this story best (www.ImagoCreative.com.) We serve as the central clearinghouse on the Web for intelligence on marketing to the Baby Boomer woman, offering data from our archives, proprietary research, marketing advice and case histories.

Come visit us, meet my outstanding team of marketing professionals, and share in the good news that the marketplace is learning to “speak our language.” Increasingly, too, companies are taking our advice, and developing their products and services with the Boomer woman in mind. Over the past several years, we have grown into a full-service marketing firm, not only offering program diagnostics, advice and consultation, but implementing public relations, web- development and a wide range of marketing initiatives.

This has been a challenging, invigorating journey. Happily, along the way, I have discovered that I was far from alone in scratching my head over the illogical marginalization and misunderstanding of this new generation of women in mid-life. I have connected with other top-notch marketers from around the country; who, like me, who have taken it upon ourselves to wake up the business and media worlds to what is, in truth, our latest revolution.

Jan Cullinane and Cathy Fitzgerald are the authors of The New Retirement: The Ultimate Guide to the Rest of Your Life (Rodale). Their book has been widely acclaimed and reached the number two ranking on both Barnes&Noble.com and Amazon.com. The Chicago Tribune, Publishers Weekly, and Library Journal have given the book outstanding reviews. Michelle Singletary, personal finance columnist (“Color of Money”) for The Washington Post, chose The New Retirement for her March 2005 book club selection.

Jan has appeared on TV both nationally and locally, has conducted more than 40 radio, Internet, and television interviews, and has published articles for newspapers and magazines including The Suburban Press, Indianapolis Prime Times, and Living Southern Style magazine. Jan has been consulted by a number of free-lancers writing articles about retirement for newspapers and magazines as well.

Through the company they formed, Retirement Living from A to Z, Jan and Cathy conduct retirement seminars and have traveled extensively investigating places to retire and talking to prospective retirees and those who have taken the plunge. Their six years of research and travel culminated in the only guide you'll need for a successful, happy retirement.

Jan has a B.S. and M.Ed. in Science Education from the University of Maryland, and has taught extensively at the high school and college level. She presently lives in Cincinnati with her husband, has three children, and thinks the word "retirement" itself should be retired. She can also speak backwards fluently!

Having a Vision for the next Chapter of your life
By Dr. Cherie Carter-Scott

Perhaps there was someone who inspired you said, “When I get older, I want to be just like Peggy!” Maybe you knew someone who was irritable and difficult to be around, and you looked at him and said, “I sure don’t want to be as grouchy as Dave!” Whether your association with growing older came from a relative, a neighbor, or a friend, you formed your attitudes and beliefs about aging from your observations of others going through the process. Tae a clean piece of paper and ask yourself the following questions:

The people I have observed growing older are -
 As I watched them, I thought -
As I interacted with them, I felt -
Based on my observations, I decided -
My thoughts about growing older are -
My feelings about growing older are -

Embracing Possibility: Creating a New Year
By Regina Leeds

As this New Year dawns, are you filled with excitement? Do you have a list of all the positive changes you want to make in your life? While it’s prudent to remember that every midnight ushers in a new beginning, a new year does have special power in it. As January 1st roars into life across the planet, people the world over share in the excitement generated by the start of a new year. The energy of my intention for a better life gets caught up in yours and those of people everywhere. This synergy is what fills our hearts with some much hope. We can consciously harness this energy with that wonderful, time- honored tradition called New Year’s Resolutions.

Now my best friend Susie would tell you, if she were with me today, that New Year’s Resolutions just don’t work. She doesn’t make them. She doesn’t believe in them. She’s my personal New Year’s Scrooge. And, be fair, she has a point. If your Resolutions never move from a vague intention or an item on a list, they will indeed languish in the land of wishful thinking. There is a way, however to make them reality.

What is the New Retirement?
By Jan Cullinane

Retirement (n): removal or withdrawal from service, office, or business; withdrawal into privacy or seclusion.

WRONG! With apologies to Webster’s Dictionary, this is no longer your father’s (or mother’s) retirement. Today’s retirees, and those approaching retirement, differ from their parents in a number of important ways. Baby boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) are living longer, perhaps spending 30 or more years in retirement. As a group, they are healthier, more active physically and mentally, more affluent, more educated, and more likely to relocate after retiring. Although seemingly an oxymoron, more Boomers plan to continue working in retirement and view retirement as a process, rather than an end, with perhaps several forays into and out of the workforce. Until fairly recently, virtually all research done about retirement dealt only with men – it was seen as a male phenomenon. Today, it’s recognized that women are retiring, too, and that retirement is often a couple’s issue as well.

Valentine’s Day, She loves Me, She loves
By Georgia Richardson

We were sitting around my girlfriend’s kitchen table and of course, as “girl talk” goes, one thing lead to another. Being writers, we relate everything to “months” and what’s going on in the “month.” We knew the next event in a writer’s world was Valentine’s Day. Inspired by this, and secretly looking for fodder, I said, “If you could do anything you wanted to do on Valentine’s Day, just for this one day, what would it be?” I was expecting to hear them say things like “Oh I’d sweep me and my hubby off to Barbados for a weekend filled with pampering and love.” Or even something like, “I’d hire Emeril to come in and cook sugar pie honey bunch the best meal he’s ever had, all by candlelight, and then - ”

NOT. The responses I got were,

Funny as in Ha Ha
By Julie Clark Robinson

“The most wasted day of all is that on which we have not laughed.” - Sebastian R. N. Chamfort

I’m not even finished wrapping presents and I find myself thinking about New Year’s Eve. Not necessarily what I’ll do – being married with two children seems to solve that problem for a person – but more annoyingly, what will I resolve to change in 2006? I could put a couple years’ worth of photos and home videos in order. I could drag my kids around to every soccer, piano, dance and martial arts class I can find. But, let’s face it, I’m not going to do that. I’m not going to lose an ounce of weight or do anything to make life harder. This year, I vow to laugh more.

Living With Eternity in Mind
By Donna Shepherd

Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 3: 13-14

Every year at this time a lot of people make many promises. Some of the New Year’s Resolutions I have heard (or made) are:

“I am going to pray an hour each day.”
“I intend to read the entire Bible!”
“I will lose thirty pounds!”
“I promise to be nice to everyone I meet.”

Dealing With Your Depression
By Karen Stephen, Ph.D.

COLUMN TWO: NAME THAT TUNE: A DESCRIPTION OF DEPRESSIVE AND MOOD DISORDERS

Depression has been called by many names over the span of human existence.

“D” words win with the most entries - which seems only fair— Despondency Despair Disconsolate Dispirited Doleful Downbeat Downcast Downhearted Dejected Down in the Dumps Desolate

“B” words have a nice bluesy feeling—Blahs Blues Blue devils Blue funk

“M” words are found in classical literature—Melancholic (big with the ancient Greeks) Moody Miserable Moping Mournful Mirthless (very Edwardian)

The Perfect Gift
By Prill Boyle

Have you ever sabotaged a dream?

Most of us at some point have dismissed an inspired idea without taking a single step towards its fulfillment. We might glance back from time to time, but we convince ourselves that our dream is neither realistic nor achievable.

Don’t be so sure.

Shades of Grey
By Nan S. Russell

A paperweight sits on my desk, etched in silver the message: Life isn't always black and white. It serves as a reminder there are few absolutes at work (or in life). Yet, it would be easier if there were; if good ideas from bad, trustworthy people from non-trustworthy, and right paths from the wrong ones could easily be discerned. I've learned in twenty years in management that increasing one's perspective increases the grey, as words like always and never become obsolete for describing most situations and most people.

Signs of a Passionate Artist
By Suzanne Falter-Barns

IA few years back, I had the great fortune to spend the day at the Vermont recording studio of a jazz musician named Chuck Eller. Chuck recorded my Discover Your Soul Purpose meditation CD, and offered to provide some background piano music as well.

From the beginning, I knew the meditations needed some kind of scoring, but exactly what and how eluded me. There are no entries in the phone book for "Composer - Mystical, Healing, Background Stuff". Furthermore, I had no idea how I was going to 'direct' such a musician. ("More - creative. No! More - uh - uh - inspiring?") The whole thing was loose enough to be almost frightening.

"Myth-conceptions" (Part Three)
By Karen Baar

In my past columns, I wrote about some of the “myths” about baby boomer women. This month, I’m writing about the myth that all newly single (divorced or widowed) women are desperate to remarry.

This is a subject near and dear to my heart, especially at the moment. I’ve been divorced nearly six years; several months ago, I started dating a lovely man (more about dating in a future column.) Recently, he and I had a “heart to heart,” in which I told him that I didn’t think I wanted to remarry, and that I’m not even sure if I ever want to live with a man again. He was surprised and a bit dismayed. “I’ve learned how to be alone, and I know I can do it,” he said. “But I also know that’s not what I want.”

Name Confusion
By Patricia McHugh Lambert

I have known men to have names which generate confusion. One of the senior attorneys in my firm, a man named Leslie Stellman, has often been confused, sight unseen, for a woman. This means that when applying in 1968 to the Johns Hopkins University, he was informed that as a female, he was ineligible for admission. Only after he sent in a photo did the admissions people allow him entry into the university. Imbued with a passion for gender equality, he became an employment attorney and spent the past 30 years educating employers about the evils (not to mention the costs) of sex discrimination and sexual harassment.

Me and My Thermostat
By Dee Adams

We are having some lovely "spring" temperatures here in Michigan this week, even though it's only early March, and I've been reflecting on how the weather seems to be such a major factor in my life these days. I'm sure it has influenced everyone on the planet at one time or another, but for the menopausal woman (and those close to her), TEMPERATURE has a whole new meaning on a daily basis.

As much as I love spring, as soon as the temps start reaching around 75, my body thinks it's time to start swelling up!

Dream Big, Dream With Love
By Judith Sherven, Ph.D. & James Sniechowski, Ph.D.

The celebration of the new year is the oldest of all continuing holidays. It was observed 4000 years ago by the ancient Babylonians and has continued, with only minor interruptions, into modern times.

Anything with a history that long and enduring clearly has deep significance for the human psyche. Perhaps it's simply a celebration of being alive, having made it through another circle of the sun. But for many of us there is also the recognition of death and rebirth, a letting go of what has been and surrendering to what is yet to be.

Boom Generation Women have a unique and extraordinary opportunity to emerge and be revered as the leaders of 21st century philanthropic endeavors. This year, the first of us turn age 60, and we will begin to think about what our significant legacy will be to our family, community and to society. We know we will leave the silver and the china - that is a tradition handed down for generations. But what new tradition will be our legacy? Let me suggest that it can and will be the legacy of values and vision. Our struggles and compromises have been appeased with the knowledge, compassion and wealth of the boom-generation women entrepreneurs. Those of us who grew up facing and deciding issues around the kitchen table are ready to take a leading role in 2lst century philanthropy which will do good for society. And sustain our values. mmdamen@earthlink.net

REFLECTIONS
I AM SO GRATEFUL for a private space for reflection.
A corner of the room is designated as sacred,
A library is filled with meaningful books,
Aromatherapy candles glow in the stillness,
And an indoor fountain creates a peaceful mood.

I AM SO GRATEFUL for time alone.
I schedule weekly dates with myself,
Vigorous walks help clear my mind,
Spending time in deep introspection
Prepares me to enjoy my own company.

I AM SO GRATEFUL for means to calm my spirit.
Reading stanzas by a favorite poet,
Or quietly reflecting on current blessings,
Deep meditation lures me to solace
And an overshadowing awareness of lasting peace.

Her book, Mothers Who Cry in the Night, originated as she would awaken in the middle of the night with feelings of helplessness, knowing that her son’s behavior was spiraling out of control, the only thing she could do in those wee dark hours would be to go to her computer and start writing to relieve her fears. It takes the reader through those long lonely nights, giving them strategies to turn these out of control feelings around, and to learn how to rebuild themselves to understand that God and Love are the foundation that they can constantly return to when these dark nights of the soul envelope them.
